Le Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image Imprimée Presents: “Vues Sur Murs” A Group Exhibition (Bruxelles, Belgique)

Vues Sus Murs

DEBATA:

25.04.2012

godz. 18.00

Rondo Sztuki, Rondo im. Gen. J. Ziętka 1

Podczas tegorocznej edycji Festiwalu odbędzie się debata poświęcona wyzwaniom, jakie obecnie stają przed street artem – komercjalizacją, festiwalizacją, wejściem sztuki ulicy do czterech ścian galerii. Do zabrania głosu zostali zaproszeni: Kristel Talv (Nuart Festival ze Stavanger w Norwegii), Angelo Milano (FAME Festival z Grottaglie we Włoszech) oraz Polacy: Ixi Color z Fundacji Vlepvnet w Warszawie i Michał Bieżyński z Fundacji Urban Forms w Łodzi. Debatę poprowadzi Łukasz Greszta (portal sosm.pl).

EGIPT / STREET ART / POLITYKA

We are incredibly proud to announce the opening of LALA Gallery on Saturday, April 21, 2012 where we will be presenting LA Freewalls Inside.
LA Freewalls Inside is a group show featuring over 40 artists who have helped make Downtown Los Angeles one of the biggest and most recognizable public art spaces in the world, including Shepard Fairey, SWOON, HOW and NOSM. Keep a lookout as we unveil the final line-up over the next two weeks.
So spread the word, bring a friend and help us break-in the space for the first of what will be many, many, more events.

New Documentary on LUDO in the Streets of Paris

The daily barrage of images and messages you see and hear merge together into a sort of white noise, a sort of mottled grey blue red yellow green purple black white noise. You will be lobbied today in the public sphere.

We have become inured to it, yet it persists. No matter how much you think that you have placed the ads into a peripheral role, they will still enter your consciousness there, in your periphery.

When Street Artist Ludo replaces bus shelter and billboard ads with his art, it is an attempted end run, a short circuiting of the commercialization of public space. In a subtle way that doesn’t jar you out of the subconscious messaging milieu, LUDO’s crisp tech-bio splicing of natural and man-made merely redirects your attention to a parallel track that leads back to you.

In this brand new video LUDO allows you into his studio to see how he makes his work and to tag along as he replaces a few selected commercial messages in the ubiquitous ad stream with his own ads that re-engineer common perception. It is interesting to see how simple it is to re-brand our environment, and LUDO is glad that director Laurie Grossett has recorded the process with Defense Dafficher. “It’s the first time I worked with a production company, a real director,” he says about the new mini-documentary, “It was a long process but I think they did a nice job.”

LUDO’s commentary has also been translated to English by Daily Motion so click “subtitles” to turn it on and understand the artist. Even without the words, the visuals communicate effectively. That’s the point.

Kid Acne Stabby Ladies in Beijing for “Cloak and Dagger”

Street Artist Kid Acne just ran in deeply wooded areas outside Beijing with “stabby ladies” in hot shorts and capes. The staged role play was a dream state reinactment to ready himself for his solo show “Cloak & Dagger” at Other Gallery, and thankfully we’ve got video documentation here.

Kid Acne “Cloak and Dagger” (image © courtesy of Kid Acne)

Touring the back rails and tracks in search of graff, he found that the urban vocabulary in Beijing can be strikingly similar to industrialized cities in the West and that people took great interest in his work. His new video casts a true grit psychedelia to his creative fantasies and appetite for play now planted in the mainland.

Pure Evil Goes Pop! Saturday at Corey Helford (LA)

Inspired by the relative ease of reproducing masterworks by so-called “copy villages” in China, as well as the reductivist assessment the market does to an artist’s body of work, Street Artist Pure Evil is knocking out versions of Jackie and Liz with black eyes dripping to the floor, just for fun.

Says the artist, “Edward Albee’s film ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ starring Taylor and Burton brilliantly illustrates a nightmare couple who use alcohol to fuel anguish and emotional pain towards each other. I was amazed at the film and so I did a painting of ‘Richard Burtons Nightmare’ / Liz Taylor’ and a print in 2 POP colourways and 2 months later, Liz died…”

Wunderkammern Gallery Presents “Nature’s Revenge” LUDO Solo Show (Rome, Italy)’

LUDO

Wunderkammern presents the young urban artist Ludo for his first solo show in Italy,: nature, both magnificent and menacing, challenges humankind from the walls of the city.

On show in Rome from 21st January at Wunderkammern, where he is making his first appearance
in Italy, the young French artist Ludo is one of the most innovative and promising on the urban art
scene. He has left his mark in major cities throughout the world (Paris, London, Zurich, Oslo, New
York, Los Angeles and Chicago), with surreal and bewildering works that are perfectly integrated
with the context in which he places them.

Ludo’s creatures emerge from reassuring greyscale images blended with acid green that is poured
onto paper, sending out a message of humility for contemporary society. Elegant and vindictive,
the artist’s creations belong in fact to the series Nature’s Revenge and Bugs: plants and insects
drawn with botanic precision, which have evolved into mechanical, chemical and technological
hybrids as a way of defending themselves against people’s aggression.

With his latest series, entitled Co-Branding, major brands like Chanel, Dior, Calvin Klein, H&M and
Benetton are transformed into aggressive and inappropriate images that nonetheless seem
perfectly in line with the aesthetic canons of contemporary publicity, thus contrasting consumers’
inurement to bombardment by multinational brands promoting luxury and much more.

On the occasion of his exhibition at Wunderkammern, Ludo will present a series of works on paper
and canvas from the series Nature’s Revenge and Co-Branding, as well as sculptures created
specifically for the gallery. Images of a proud and haunting nature, where the aesthetic canons of
advertising are filtered by the artist’s ironic and mocking eye.

Texting at the Bus Stop, On the Bus Stop

(Image © Ludo)

An interesting departure for Street Artist LUDO, the Parisian who’s usually messing with nature:  a new series of images show what appears to be bus shelters scrawled with clever phrases and plays on words. Can’t help but be reminded of Brooklyn’s Elbow Toe, another studio artist who places text-based snatches of poetry and reverie on dumpsters and doorways around New York. Without stylistic flourish or flair, this form of street texting has antecedents of course; Basquiats’ SAMO scripting, for example, and REVS underground diaries, among others. It raises questions about how one might define it? Street Art? Graffiti? It is just interesting to follow this thread that continues into this new year.

LUDO and FKDL Welcome 2012 with New Pieces

LUDO thinks of the new year as a big green pumpkin, an allusion to harvesting something that has grown gargantuan on the ground. (photo © Ludo)

FKDL prefers to look at 2012 as a dancing, strutting, posing proposition; an interpretive welcome to the new year. (photo © Courtesy of FKDL)

Along with the new piece, “Personality”, pictured above by Street Artist Infinity, the roster includes many of the names on the scene today bringing it inside from the cold, including Cassius Fowler , Celso , ChrisRWK , Cope2 , Darkcloud , H. Veng Smith , Indiw 184 , KA , Keely, Kenji Nakayama , Kosbe , Manhattan , Matt Siren , Moody , Nose Go, Royce B , Russell King , UR New York, and Wrona

Droid and Avoid “Live the Dream, Learn to Die II”

Speaking of trains, Avoid and Droid have collected tales of their freight-hopping journey up the West Coast in the summer of 2011, and include fun stories told in rusted rail haiku like ones about the pot-growing subculture they discovered in California. Also they give helpful hints about how to pick your spot in the weeds to catch some shut-eye, how you should not defecate in the pathways, and that urine flows downhill. Welcome to the Jungle! Call it a punk-rock travel guide.

“Images of the Year 2011” From Brooklyn Street Art (Video)

It’s been an excellent year for Street Art all over the world and we’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of great stuff from big names to the anonymous. Eye popping, brain-teasing, challenging, entertaining, aspirational and inspirational – it’s all happening at once.  We’ve been walking the streets, meeting the artists, going to shows, curating shows, speaking to audiences, providing walls, and asking questions. It ebbs and flows but never stays the same. With the rise of the Occupy movement this autumn, we’re already seeing an uptick in the number of people taking their messages to the street with a renewed intensity.
