Here is our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Andrzej Urbankski, Dyke, False, Icy & SOT, Indigo, Jeice 2, Karma, Love Me, Nick Walker, Rambo, and Sorta. Somehow we’ve assembled a rather eclectic collection for you that includes some black and white billboard images by Jaime Rojo that are more on the graffiti tip, as well as new images from Baltimore, Berlin and Spain.

Speaking of black and white, we’ve noticed that quite a few artists are limiting their palettes to something more monochromatic lately. Have you noticed that too? It’s also kind of cool to see these new pieces from the Iranian Street Artists Icy and Sot, who have their first solo show coming up shortly in New York.

Street Artist Phlegm from Sheffield (GB) was passing through New York this week and took a little time to add his character to a wall that Know Hope from Tel-Aviv painted in early March in NYC. Says Phlegm, “I couldn’t pass the opportunity to add one of my characters giving his a helping hand.” Our geography skills aren’t too strong but this work connects 3 continents, doesn’t it? “Images of the Year 2011” From Brooklyn Street Art (Video)

It’s been an excellent year for Street Art all over the world and we’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of great stuff from big names to the anonymous. Eye popping, brain-teasing, challenging, entertaining, aspirational and inspirational – it’s all happening at once. We’ve been walking the streets, meeting the artists, going to shows, curating shows, speaking to audiences, providing walls, and asking questions. It ebbs and flows but never stays the same. With the rise of the Occupy movement this autumn, we’re already seeing an uptick in the number of people taking their messages to the street with a renewed intensity.

Let’s take a look at some of our favorite shots, whether from a rooftop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a block-long wall in Miami, or the “Art in the Streets” show at LA MoCA. As you sample this eye-candy platter, dig the staccato soundtrack made of sounds culled from Brooklyn’s streets by electro duo Javelin, who spent a day in the Red Hook neighborhood collecting sounds and then mixed them in the back of their car. This is the kind of D.I.Y. ingenuity that is fueling the fire in artists neighborhoods all over the world, with people taking their stories and skills directly to the streets. We start this week with a brand new nearly block-long installation in Bushwick, Brooklyn by Street Artists Chris Stain, Billy Mode, and Voke called “In The Dream”. The guys really stretched themselves physically and creatively, coxing out a more subtle and layered treatment of their subjects and symbols . It creates a dream-like feeling frankly.

French street artist and TED Prize winner JR visited New York recently to help turn the Bronx “Inside Out”. As most of our readers are already aware, JR used his prize money to encourage communities all over the world to take part in the conversations on the streets and to let the creative spirit flow. In The Bronx section of New York City a group of dedicated individuals took the artist’s call in earnest and invited members of the community to participate by taking the photographs, posing for the photographs and wheat pasting them in the Hunts Point Section of The Bronx. JR was there for one day to lend a hand after he had finished his large installations in Manhattan. The streets are coming alive with sculpture-like objects this spring – repurposed household items and brand new houses for the avian set are suddenly popping up like yellow and purple crocuses on the toxic banks of the Gowanus Canal. Also you’ll notice a bit more nudity these days, some frankly frank, as spring and a young man’s/woman’s fancy are abloom.

PaperGirl Rolls into Bushwick: Gaia & Clown Soldier Play Next Door

The Free Art Paper Girls Paint a Street Art Mural in Bushwick (BK)

PaperGirl is bringing a new way to experience Street Art to New York this month. Originally debuted in Berlin five years ago the project also offers you something to take home, if you are lucky.

One thing that you will not be able to take home is the fresh new mural in Brooklyn that PaperGirl put up yesterday with the help of some of their participating artists. Helpfully, the map they painted on the corner of the building gives you the schedule and locations of their upcoming events, which is so handy – although not as lightweight as an iPhone. They gave the artists the chance to experience street painting whilst promoting their New York Project where they give out art to people on the street.

And while PaperGirl-NY was busy with their mural, Gaia and Clown Soldier were busy with theirs on the same huge wall in Brooklyn. Gaia told us that his pieces were done and that RAMBO was going to go over them with his work. By the time BSA was there RAMBO was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile Clown Soldier had some more work ahead.
