Images of the Week 12.16.12

Ahhhhhhhhh, we are all going to Hell in a hand basket! That’s what your music teacher Mrs. Penny Whistle said as she picked that last little caramel-colored shard of peanut brittle out of the box at her desk and crunched loudly as you played your Top 40 musical contribution for the whole 6th grade class to listen to on your mini-speakers. And in fact, she may have been correct. Look at what has happened since then! Also, the Mayans tell us we have about 5 fricken cold December days left till we all die a calamitous death, which is why I have done NO Christmas shopping.

Friday on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn you may have also learned about where YOU are likely to go after the big apocalypse and Jaime Rojo is pleased to share the answer photographically here (see the last picture).

But before we get to your final resting place, here is our weekly interview with the street, which is very lively this week! We’re featuring 4 Burners Crew, Bast, Dasic, EKG, Icy & Sot, Lädy, HUSH, MA, Mr. Toll, Nether, Okuda, Olek, Rubin, Square, Start, and Tripel.

What can we say? Have a great week.

Street Art Barocks the Vote. It’s Your Turn Now.

Today in the US we are electing a President. Exercise your right to VOTE.  Otherwise we don’t want to hear one single complaint out of you, okay?

We endorse President Barack Obama for a second term. Here’s why:

In four years Obama has proved to have the character and integrity to lead us out of financial ruin and build some good things for our future. They drove the car into the ditch and drunkenly tossed Brother Barry the keys – what he inherited was a country on the verge of financial collapse with a growing bad reputation in the neighborhood. With steady hands and determination he managed, without much help from the Republicans in Congress, to slowly rebuild our nation and make it stronger. Sure he didn’t do everything he promised he would. But he accomplished a lot, despite unrelenting attacks on him every time he drew a breath.

Me (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Let’s call it like it is – racist hatred came out in full force over the last four years like sewage from an overflowing septic tank. We’re getting better at this racism thing, but we still suck at it. And Obama faced it with honor and grace. People reversed their own positions completely – just so they could fight him, box him out, sandbag him, or try to put him in his place. Some of these people would have mowed down their own grandma with an SUV if Obama was helping her across the street. Regardless of who captures this race for the next four years, Obama has made us proud with his style of steadily fighting for what he believed was good for the country – without trashing other people in the process. That’s a style of American we can support.

There are a lot of people who will be affected by your vote for Obama/Biden:

Artists: If you are an artist and care for the arts in this country or if you have an artist friend or relative, Obama is your man. Romney promises to gut the National Endowment for the Arts, National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting System, and to put Big Bird on the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Teachers: If you are a teacher and care for our schools and our kids education or if you have a teacher friend or a relative, Obama’s got your back. He has also been on the side of most working people in general, and supports union people and families, fire fighters, car workers, the whole enchilada.

GLBT folks: Dude was a little slow at first, but eventually O and Biden have proven to be torch bearers in one of the most important civil rights issue of our time. If you are not gay but you have friends or relatives who are, voting for Obama will help make sure that LGBT aren’t stripped of their rights again. It’s rough to go back in the closet once you are out, and you really should have the same rights as everybody else.

BAST (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Social Service workers: Only Obama and the Democrats are committed to help funding our social safety net – This prevents people from falling into despair and poverty when they are old, sick, unemployed, hungry, disabled. It’s what we are supposed to do – take care of our people. Millions of families are poorer now than ever before and Money Bags Mitt and his friends will happily shred the safety net if they can make another buck. Social Services workers deal with individuals who have special needs and who need special care too – these are true heroes of our communities. If you have a family member or friend who is mentally ill or physically challenged, you know who are the people who work with them to treat them and care for them with dignity. Obama and Co. will work to make sure that they keep getting what they need to do God’s work, instead of figuring out ways to cut budgets for food, travel, medical treatment, rehabilitation.

Immigrants: If you know a friend or a relative who is a decent human being, a hard worker and a value to our society who cannot secure a safe position in the community due his or her legal status in this country you will help them to achieve their dreams by casting a vote for Obama. Scapegoating people who have consistently contributed great things to society is kind of sick. Keeping people afraid and economically insecure is so below us.

Artist Unknown (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Women: Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was Obama’s first – giving women the right to sue after they realize they’ve been getting paid less than men. He also put two women on the Supreme Court by the way. Mitt and his buddies may have binders full of women but the ugly truth is they have been totally busy rolling back the clock on women’s rights to the 1950s, or 1850s.  If you are a woman or love one, support women’s right to live in the 2010s.

People who breathe air and drink water: Not that he’s been the best, and Obama’s still giving up too much to the oil / goal / gas lobbies – but Romney will just hand over everything, including public lands, and will decimate any pretense at protecting our land, water, and air.

People who get sick: About 30 million more people will be able to get healthcare now than 4 years ago. Obamacare isn’t going to be perfect because he gave into the insurance companies too much during negotiations, but it’s a Hell of a lot better now than four years ago – and we can build on this plan. Pre-existing medical condition? – You can’t get dropped like a hot potato anymore. You can also stay on your parents’ health insurance till your 25. That didn’t exist 4 years ago. Mitt wants to scrap the whole thing.

Rocksmith (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Old People and Future Old People: Just like the Bush-Cheney people before them, when it comes to Social Security and healthcare, Romney and Ryan want to slice and dice that shit, and play it on the horses. If we had let George put Social Security into investments in the stock market like he wanted to, your grandma would be starving right now. That would have crashed in ’09.  Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid – that’s yours baby. Social Security is the most successful program in human history that has helped prevent millions of old people from falling through the cracks . Don’t let them slice and dice it away. You are gonna need it later. No kidding.

The President and the First Lady have endured a lot since the day they moved into the White House and in a lot of ways they have made us proud and sometimes full of admiration. Keeping them there is an excellent way to tell the haters how bad their behavior has been – And that the first time we elected him wasn’t a fluke.

Okay we’ve said our piece. It’s not about Street Art, really, and we’re not strictly thought of as political analysts.  But you know, this blog is about you and people who follow this ongoing conversation that artists have on the street. Politics, sex, love, money, power, social issues; Somehow it’s all related. Most importantly you should probably just vote your conscience, and thanks for your time and support.

Images of the Week 11.04.12

This was a tough week for New York and we’re still struggling to recover from the Hurricane whose name we’re tired of saying. We have every reason to believe New Yorkers will continue to pull together, as we always do. Go Brooklyn! Go Staten Island! Go Manhattan! Go Queens! Go Bronx! Go Long Island! Go New Jersey! Go Connecticut! New York, you are beautiful and we love you.

As ever, photographer Jaime Rojo was on the streets shooting a lot of stuff, and of course there was new Street Art to discover too. So here’s our weekly interview with the street, including 2501, Bast, Cash for Your Warhol, Classic, Cynthia von Buhler, FKDL, Gilf!, Hanksy, JR, Nick Walker, Pixel Pancho, Rene Gagnon, Ron English, and You Are Beautiful.

The Parisian FKDL left new stuff that appeared on the streets of Brooklyn recently, his collages now evolving to include more detailed figurework in a 1950s illustration style. Using clippings from vintage newspapers and magazines in the compositions, these wheat pastes/collages are hand colored and one of a kind, left for the few who catch sight of them before the weather destroys them. Many boarded up and empty lots were uncovered by the fury of hurricane Sandy this week. Many plywood fences blew up and away, exposing the hidden walls. This is an old JR piece that we have documented before but we have not been able to get inside this fenced lot until now. Naturally, it now has been transformed a bit by the contributions of tags on it, sort of emulating the stripe painted across this native American’s face. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

A lot of action on the street right now – people are in organized events, on commissioned walls and doing their own personal thang too.  Here’s our weekly interview with the street featuring Bast, Chris and Veng from Robots Will Kill, ECB, Faile, Jaye Moon, Jetsonorama, JM, Judith Supine, Meer Sau, Mr. Toll, ND’A, NoseGo, See One, and Stik.

Rhiannon was rejoicing on Friday night because she said she had not seen a live new Judith Supine since she moved to New York, so that’s cool. People have been texting and tweeting us about it since it appeared – it’s like it should have been accompanied by a chorus and some trumpets or something. Ladies and Gentlemen, Judith Supine. Dan Witz Goes to London. Keep Your Eyes Open.

Street Artist and fine artist Dan Witz is prepping for his part in a new group show titled “Bedlam” in the deep recesses of London with Lazarides Gallery. “We’re doing this huge thing in the tunnels below the Old Vic – should be massive,” he tells us with some thrill in his email voice. It’s good to hear Dan happy, because his work can be so dark. Just back from Frankfurt where he worked with Amnesty International to highlight the human rights and justice work that organization does for all of us, these new images on the streets of London are the Street Art component of Witz’s practice that is quietly compelling and unsettling.

Dan Witz. London 2012 (photo © Dan Witz)

Certainly the aim of these pieces is not to put us at ease, to “Keep Calm and Carry On”. The figures behind the glass are depicted as imprisoned or trapped, and your second glance at them will leave you disconcerted and troubled. Witz goes where many artists won’t or can’t in his explorations of the human condition and man’s inhumanity – reminding us that art can serve more than to just send us home happy and content.  It can also connect us with a truer sense of the world, provide a bit of grounding and remind us of the work that needs to be done. With this work Witz give a voice to those who don’t have words to express their suffering.

Our thanks to Dan for sharing these super fresh images exclusively for BSA readers.

Images of the Week 09.30.12

This week seemed busy on the streets of New York after LA graff writer Saber started us off on Sunday with a sky-writing campaign that was politically charged arts advocacy and a social media-soaked smackdown of the right wing in the US. From culture-jamming to political commentary to social advocacy, it looks like some Street Artists are getting back their voice in many pieces that are espousing a message.  Not all of them of course.

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Bast, Billi Kid, Creepy, Classic, Espo, Home Sick, JB Rock, Jeice 2, Meer Sau, ND’A, Olek, OverUnder, PM AM, Reader, and Ugo Rondinone. Locations include New York, Istanbul, London, Portugal, Sicily, and the Pilbara desert in the Northwest of Australia.

Sevin’s Errline. This ad-bust wins the week. In this case the artist(s) attached his/her /their decomposing, surrealist airplane to a huge vinyl banner that is shilling luxury condos in Manhattan. It’s a prime example of how un-commissioned and illegal Street Art can create and lead conversations on the street. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

As he paints the giant 8-shaped snake biting it’s tail, the Italian Street Artist JB Rock explains his new piece this way, “This is a portrait of our modern society and especially of my beautiful but very counterproductive country. For this work I’ve been inspired by the UROBORUS concept, remixed with the Infinity symbol”.

Bäst Sells Olive Oil and Opens New Show at Opera Gallery (NYC)

Street Artist Bäst has always mixed a savory chopped image salad.  With his dicing, cutting, collaging and stencilling work on the street over the last decade, a lot of his recent stencils are twisted Bodega style signs advertising basic staples for the pantry. But of all the collaborative advertising that Street Artists have been getting into, we never could have predicted this; Olive oil. You can actually go to snooty classist foodery Dean and Deluca and buy a bottle of Bast style olive oil right now. Only 500 were made in this limited edition and the oil smells better than the petroleum-spilled brownfields in industrial Bushwick where you usually see his work, so why not?

This Brooklyn native artist has been amusing, hijacking, and inspiring with his work on the streets of New York for well over a decade and it’s also cool to see his gallery work at his solo show “Germs Tropicana” opened last night at Opera in Manhattan. If the pieces are too pricey, Dean and Deluca is just a couple of blocks away!

LUDO “Metal Miltia” at Galerie Itinerrance (PARIS)

Parisian Street Artist LUDO was in multiple shows around the world and blanketed the Paris Metro and bus shelters with his subvertisements for two years before a gallery in his native city invited him inside. Tonight Galerie Itinerrance will have LUDO’s first solo show entitled “Metal Militia”.

With a truly unique approach to social critique that serves as a cunning indictment of the advertising industry and the military industrial complex, you won’t find anything like the pretty disgust than the work of LUDO.

“All Write You Scumbags” with Reyes and Steel at Klughaus (Chinatown, NYC)

Ever the ballsy wiseguy, the Klaughaus Gallery in Manhattan continues to produce and present quality shows that challenge your possibly prejudicial pre-formed perceptions of propriety and pugnacity. This time they invited West Coast natives Reyes and Steel to exhibit at their space with a show titled “All Write You Scumbags”.

From the press release, “The New York debut for both artists and showcases a distinct chemistry cultivated over years working together as friends, creative partners and members of MSK, one of the highest regarded graffiti artist collectives in the world.” To find out what this means go to their show opening tonight.

“Dominant Species” by ROA at 941 Geary (San Francisco)

Street Artist ROA concludes his US Summer Tour 2012 in San Francisco at his own victorious opening Saturday at  941 Geary Gallery. The show is aptly called “Dominant Species” and will feature many of the cast of creatures you have grown to expect.

“Here is a Street Artist who has very effectively escaped the street, an introvert traveling quietly in the extroverted world, with open eyes and an acute talent for observation; decoding the universe through study of the natural, and unnatural.” BSA

GAIA, MOMO AND MICHAEL OWEN in “Zim Zum” (Baltimore)

GAIA, MOMO AND MICHAEL OWEN are transforming the space at the Creative Alliance Gallery in Baltimore with a collaboration that promises to spill over the street and beyond. If you want to see what the trio is up to put the gameboy down and head out to the gallery for their opening tomorrow night with an exhibition titled Zim Zum.

See MOMO in GEOMETRICKS, presented by BSA and curated by Hellbent next weekend in BROOKLYN, baby.

Don’t Fret in “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Chardonnay”(Chicago)

Chicago based Street Artist Don’t Fret has a new solo show, “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Chardonnay” opening Saturday night at the Bizzare Gallery in Chicago.  So if you are planning to arrive naked, BYOB and put your wallet under your armpit. Lo-fi comic book doodling that make most people look like family day at the tractor pull, Don’t Fret drawings are people you know and often dang hilarious.

In the spirit of Unity, we present Street Artist eL Seed in Tunisia (VIDEO)

This week there has been much news of sadness, discord, and suffering in Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. Street Artist and painter eL Seed gives us a moment to pull back and reflect on the beauty and poignancy that a religious belief system can contribute to the lives of some.

Here he creates ‘Madinati’ Calligraffiti on Jara Mosque in Gabes.
