Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present A Beautiful Madness, the first solo exhibition in the USA by JonOne. Though raised in New York, JonOne has lived in Paris since the mid 1980’s where he has established himself as an artist, building a career that has spanned over 20 years.
From his early days as a youth, tagging the streets of Harlem, JonOne has always emphasized a painterly approach, bringing brushes instead of spray cans to tag subway trains. Drawing from the energy and freedom of painting in an urban landscape, he translates his roots as a graffiti artist into paintings that are a completely unique form of abstract expressionism. Akin to Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, JonOne’s pieces exhibit an enormous sense of movement and color. His compositions combine freestyle, precise strokes, repetition and texture for a uniquely balanced yet dynamic visual experience.
“…my life is very fast-moving and intense, and I hope I convey that energy through my work. [My paintings] represent me but in a different dynamic from when they were linked to a street context. The way I present my work has changed but I can’t deny my roots or my schooling. Even so, I don’t see myself as a street artist because I don’t feel that need to go out and do stuff. JonOne’s paintings represent a new era of contemporary artists who have moved beyond their roots as graffiti writers to establish themselves as painters. Recognized internationally for his urban contemporary paintings, JonOne has stayed true to his artistic vision. From Paris to Shanghai, Casablanca to Hong-Kong, he has exhibited in galleries and art fairs around the world, resulting in a tremendous response from both the public and collectors as well as at auction.

It was the summer of 1992 that I deployed my first stikman in the East Village. In the early years the sticks were not painted, It took me much longer to make them at the time because I was always changing the way they were constructed. In the first year I don’t think I made more than 50 of them, they were between 5 and 6 inches tall and made of basswood. By 1996 I had started painting them and begun producing many more per year.
Once I started painting the 3-D stikmen I also started to paint stickers. Combining the 2 dimensional graphic element expanded my view of the ever changing stikman form, and the project took off in unforeseen directions. I was finding many different materials and processes with which to explore the realm of stikman. Over the years I have affixed and painted the stikman on numerous LP record covers, prints, book pages, cut paper paste-ups, hollow core doors and a variety of metal, wood, cloth and plastic objects. Some of my favorite pieces include stenciling images on ping pong balls, bricks, tiny slide viewers, and playing cards. And of course there were always little wooden men made of sticks.
My pieces start their lives as static objects, but they come to life when I place them in a public place where they are subject to the forces of time, interactions with humans and climate. I share this transient form of art to connect with a viewer whom I will never meet, in hopes that the joy of finding the unexpected has altered their consciousness. It finds an indigenous space in our surroundings like a flower escaping from the crack in a sidewalk. Continuously altered by time and circumstance.

Unruly Gallery is proud to present EGSEgs is the most internationally recognized Finnish graffiti artist. His career started in Helsinki during the late 80s and was part of the country’s first graffiti wave.
His art is an anthropological research into graffiti.

Dale Grimshaw is a dynamic artist calling on powerful emotions and strongly held belief to fuel his creative output. This tumultuous energy has produced a marvelous series of paintings over the past five years – works that have often been highly personal, but because of their directness and honesty, have succeeded in resonating with very many people.
In his new show, ‘Moreish’ Dale is deeply concerned by the increasingly desperate dance of excess that he sees so many of us jig along to. As the artist says ‘It’s a case of enough is never enough. The ‘haves’ want more and the ‘have nots’ can pay for it. Once we get that acquisitive taste, we just want more and more’.
The response from the artist to this view of the world is ironically seductive. Succulent cakes, fruit, meat, chocolate and cream are piled on top of each other in an orgy of visual sensations. The works themselves have a disturbingly ‘Moreish’ appeal and despite the artist’s displeasure at a world where ‘some people don’t have a pot to piss in, while others are eating live octopus and filming the torture for youtube’, the images take on a Rubenesque lushness, full of symbolism and atmosphere.
Indeed much of the imagery references the increasingly overblown world of the baroque, a world that was on a collision course with the French Revolution. There is an underlying sadness, as if the artist is saying that this unsustainable behaviour will surely come to a crashing end at some point soon.
This will be Dale’s fifth solo show at Signal. His work has been seen in galleries across the world, notably in Paris, Rome, Berlin and in the USA. Dale is also getting recognition for his street art. He is now considered to be the leading street artists in the UK to use the woodcut print ‘paste up’ medium. He has also been invited to take part in a number of street art festivals across the UK and Europe, producing large mixed media works in his inimitable style.

Inspired by Andy Warhol, Ron English created his own movement and was baptized “The Father of Street Art.” One of the most important and respectable artists of our time, Shepard Fairey, referred to English as “an artist who can paint an advertising satire with the skill of a Renaissance Master (one who’s been to the future and witnessed surrealism and 1984!).”
While participating in illegal public art campaigns from the early 1980s, English developed the skills of a master painter to become one of the pioneers of Pop-Surrealism.
He is one of the very few contemporary artists who still uses his oil dipped paintbrush to create masterpieces like a Picasso on acid would do.
English’s Guernica is one of his most popular pieces. It is a piece which demonstrates that he does not see as the rest of us. The intensity of the Pop Surrealists’ explosion, including his brilliant use of color and his nightmarish creatures, surely leads the viewers eye and mind towards a feeling of tripping while standing in front of his works.
In “Crucial Fiction,” a series of paintings revealing an inspired collaboration with his former self, English seems to have made an important decision to prove that a true artist is able to use his imagination and transform it into reality. His vision is willing to offer us a unique experience with the excitement and vitality of a child, a child who cultivated a bountiful career that has been spread across streets, museums, movies, music, books and television.

English lives and works in New York. His art is in the collections of the Whitney Museum in New York, Museum of Contemporary art in Paris, Today Art Museum in Beijing, Wynwood Walls in Miami (Art Basel), MOMA: screening of his documentary “The Art and Crimes of Ron English.” His collaborations include Puma, Absolut Vodka and the album covers of artists Chris Brown and Slash to name a few.

Galerie Swanström is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by (GILF!) on October 24th at the gallery from 5 to 8 PM. The private reception will include a brief Q&A with this Brooklyn-based, female street artist to discuss her inspiration, technique and new work addressing “Citizens United, and our disintegrating constitution”… explains the artist.
The artist depicts herself as The Statue of Liberty in the painting titled Oh Yeah? which discusses Americans ‘drinking the Kool-Aid’ (so to speak) as our government, corporations, and police forces may take advantage of a complacent society. The hand written text quoted in the background is taken from a speech given by Aldous Huxley in 1962.
GILF!’s paintings boldly confront challenges facing contemporary societies.
In the poignant painting titled Who’s in Control?, the letters around the dial of the birth control package — usually indicating the days of the week for each pill — have been replaced to spell: “WHY ARE CROTCHETY OLD MEN DECIDING WHAT IS RIGHT FOR WOMEN’S BODIES?” The artist uses the birth control package as a visual metaphor to call attention to the bias apparent at a Capitol Hill hearing on women’s health; an all-male panel led the hearing and no women were called to testify.
GILF!’s paintings are accessible to the new collector and directly benefit the causes she calls attention to; the artist donates a portion of each sale to not-for- profit organizations relevant to each painting’s social commentary. In doing this GILF! includes her collectors in taking actions that will facilitate change.

Gallery for the People is pleased to announce that its Fall 2012 pop-up exhibition, featuring exclusive new works by artists Sage Vaughn, Deedee Cheriel and Curtis Kulig, will take place Thursday, October 18th at the Stonebook Court Estate, in Los Altos Hills, CA. Hosted by Juxtapoz Magazine Editor-In-Chief, Evan Pricco, and actress, Marisa Tomei, the Fall exhibition is the first Bay Area pop-up for the migrating gallery, founded by Eva Maria Daniels and Ally Canosa.
“We are thrilled to show new works for the first time in the Bay Area and of course to partner with the PAIFF,” says gallerist and co-founder, film-producer, Eva Maria Daniels, who is located part-time in Palo Alto. “Our mission is to celebrate the cultures of film and art, and we are privileged to bring our vision to Silicon Valley, where these platforms can thrive amidst the foreground of technology.

As a painter and illustrator, Sage Vaughn is best recognized for his ‘Wildlife’ series depicting vibrant butterflies, owls and sparrows, in otherwise melancholic, city scenes. Vaughn is interested in the interface between man’s wild side and animals’ civilized qualities, proposing a heavy dichotomy of beauty, violence and urban melancholy, packaged in a technicolor, sugary surface. His work includes illustrations for multiple music videos including N.A.S.A’s “Way Down,”and an exhibit at MOCA, curated by Mike D of the Beastie Boys. His art has been shown and collected internationally for over a decade.
With influences derived from such opposites as East Indian temple imagery and punk rock,Deedee Cheriel‘s images are indications of how we try to link ourselves to others and how these satirical and heroic efforts are episodes of both compassion and discomfort. Bold elements drawn from urban and natural landscapes as well as pop culture suggest the ability to find commonalities and relationships between ourselves and our surroundings that inevitably confirm our greater humanity and quest towards love
Curtis Kulig is presenting a new collection from his acclaimed series Love Me, a mixed-media message that can not only be found on his canvases, but also amongst street corners and rooftops of New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Tokyo. His iconic style has been featured in branding campaigns with Vans and Smashbox to the walls of Paris’ paragon of fashion, Colette.
Work will be showcased in the Ballroom of the Stonebrook Court Estate for one night only before becoming available to collectors via the gallery website on October 19th, 2012. Gallery Brown is thrilled to announce Matter of Time, an exhibition of new paintings, works on paper and sculpture from artist Gregory Siff. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Gregory officially made Los Angeles home in 2009 where he has since established himself as a recognizable cultural influence.
Gregory’s distinct handmade style merges unique elements of abstraction, street, and fine art; his technique coalesces the voice of a fearless child with the wisdom of a seasoned warrior. His influences include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, RETNA, Ray Johnson, RISK, David Shillinglaw, Louis XXX and his father.
Matter of Time is an examination of fame, idolatry, memory, determination, kingship and heart. Gregory’s half-whispered thoughts are painted out in full roars on found material, handmade panel and canvas.
Gregory’s first solo show in 2011, G, at La Fonderie in Los Angeles was quickly followed by There & Back at Siren Studio’s Rooftop Sessions to much acclaim. Commissions include The Standard Hotel and De La Barracuda Wall. In New York, his work was featured in The Deitch Projects Art Parades. His work has also been exhibited in London, Dublin, Italy and Vancouver, and has appeared in Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, Paper Mag, The LA Times, Complex and Glamour. Most recently, Gregory won the 2012 Los Angeles Red Bull Curates: The Road to Art Basel, Miami where his work will be featured.
