“Surface” Brings 6 New Murals to Copenhagen

New images of epic murals in Copenhagen today from Conor Harrington (UK), ROA (Belgium), Borondo (Spain), DALeast (China), Maya Hayuk (US) and HuskMitNavn (DK) on the occasion of the release of Surface, the book by Danish photographer SØREN SOLKÆR. The walls were part of the grand official introduction in mid-June, supported by a huge 122 display of large format portraits of 220 x 330 cm in a grid-like street scape. The Surface events were done in cooperation with Øksnehallen, V1 Gallery and the municipality in Copenhagen, which contributed funds toward the completion.

No doubt inspired by SØRENs signature photography style that is influenced by the staging of cinema and theater, these new murals similarly take on a sweeping grand style and scope.

We Love Paris In The Spring Time! New Shots of Street Art.

When Cole Porter wrote “I love Paris in the Springtime!” in 1953 he probably was thinking of showgirls and their suitors and the wickedness of the Montmartre dance halls in the 1890s, but when photographer Sandra Hoj was in Paris last week she was thinking of aerosol paintings and paste-ups, and her enthusiasm was equal or greater to Porters.

“Five full glorious days in one of my favorite cities,” she writes when talking about her excursions into the Paris Street Art scene, saying, “Noticing street art is a party, not a job. It’s time to dance.”

Now back in Copenhagen where she blogs and writes about infrastructure, urban planning, bike parking, and trees, Ms. Hoj happily shares her newest Paris findings with BSA readers, and we thank her for it!

“I miss Paris already,” she adds.

“The Outings Project; a cool participative art project, moving Renaissance museum art into the streets. It is spreading all over the world. I caught this one in Paris, before I even knew that it was part of something bigger,” says Sandra.

Happy Holidays to all of you charming and sparkling BSA readers!
It’s been a raucous sleigh ride with you and we thank everyone most sincerely for your support and participation this year. A sort of tradition for us at the end of this December we are marking the year with “14 from 2014”. We asked photographers and curators from various perspectives of street culture to share a gem with all of us that means something to them. Join us as we collectively say goodbye and thank you to ’14.

Copenhagen blogger, writer, and photographer Sandra Hoj is the right person to give you a healthy overview of a city, and an eye for detail. A natural preservationist, Hoj feels protective of sculptures and edifices and fights to keep trees in the cityscape – and loves to visit and re-visit her favorite Street Art pieces. All tolled she estimates that she has over 40,000 images of Street Art and architectural details archived. Today she shares with BSA readers one her favorite shots of Street Art from a trip to Paris in 2014.

Finding Peace In Copenhagen with Sculpting Street Artist Tejn

Sandra Hoj has been tracking the work of iron sculpture Street Artist Tejn for a few years now and she tells us that she had spotted a number of new ones recently. Any kind of art in the streets that is illegal and elicits a response is considered “real” street art by most today, so it is interesting to see this welded storyline as it continues to unfold and lock itself around the capital city of Denmark.

“Tejn just released a fresh batch of lock on sculptures in Copenhagen. Made from salvaged iron found in the streets, welded into sculptures, and returned as art chained to public railings. The three pieces I have spotted so far, all speak of peace, and they seem almost tailored for the locations. Like the gun in the meat grinder, attached to a pole by the troubled People’s Park.”

“The attention to detail is extraordinary. Look at the tiny hands on the man carefully winding up the peace sign! I find it impossible to pass a Tejn, and not feel instantly better.”

Paris: A Mid-Summer Mural Art Dispatch

A quick look at three new murals from Paris today as the summer of ’13 has been one full of mural art around the northern hemisphere it would appear. Today we check the very active Street Art scene in Paris, which occasionally boasts large-scale murals as well.

Illustrator Alexis Diaz, or La Pandilla, has been travelling around Europe this summer (London, Turin) and we look at his most recent fantasy in Belleville to start us off. You may see similarities to Phlegm and even Gaia here in his work as he combines human limbs and animals to create heretofore non-existent hybrids and hand rendered illusion.

The scale here is also pretty impressive as Tunisia’s eL Seed carries his calligraffiti to ever larger installations since knocking out that minaret in Gabes last year and the series of underpass walls on Salwa Road in Doha. Finally we get a peek at Paris-based artist Pole Ka as she offers a new piece in her series of anatomies on the street.

Images of the Week 10.14.12

This week we saw pumpkins piled at the corner deli, the Yanks pushing on toward the series, Streisand returning at 70 to sing again in Brooklyn, that Rasta MC goin’ hard over his stack of speakers outside the barbershop on a sunny cool day, Christopher Columbus as a giant sculpture in somebody’s living room, and we can confirm that underground art parties are now moving to Bed Stuy, bypassing Bushwick. Stranger things will undoubtedly keep happening because Halloween is on Wednesday this year; pretty much guaranteeing a solid week of sexy horror on the street because people won’t know when to party, and you’re going to see at least 3 mock boxing fights between two guys dressed up as Obama and Romney with gloves because the Presidential election is 11/6. The actual 2nd match-up of the candidates is this Tuesday in Long Island to debate. Are the Yankees playing that night?

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, an eclectic trip that takes us to Brooklyn, Paris, Baltimore, and Russia with Cern, Overunder, Philippe HÉRARD, Lili Luciole, Concrete Jungle, Hot Tea, Love Child, Dain, Sorta, and Cynthia von Buhler. We start of with this faux neighborhood painted by Concrete Jungle on a building in Vladivostok.

Springtime in Paris : Une Petite Revue of New Street Art

Cities in all the hemispheres take turns being the pre-eminent location for Street Art and street culture as the influences that lead to a lively scene cropping up in a city and becoming popular are in continual flux. Whether its economics, demographics, politics, or the various timelines of cultural evolution intersecting, the conditions must be just right for a Street Art scene to blossom and endure in all it’s idiosyncratic splendor. At the moment it is Springtime in Paris and photographer Sandra Hoj says during her visit to the city, “I was overwhelmed by the amount of street art. It was not just limited to a single area, but all over the place, in every crack and corner.”

While the current Street Art movement in French cities can be traced to the late 1970s and early 80s stencillists with names like Jef Aerosol, Mis Tic, Speedy Graphito, and the guy who Banksy credits for influencing his rodential proclivities, Blek Le Rat – the last decade has brought a new generation of wheat-pasters, pop appropriaters, culture jammers, and fine artists of every discipline who have put their own mark on the modern age. Some, like C215, are even called new masters of the stencil genre. This quick survey gives just a taste of what’s happening at the moment and there are many names regularly up in addition to these.

Sandra reports “There are pieces from the ever-present Space Invader, of course, and Jef Aerosol, Nick Walker, Jand & JS (Janaundjs), Fred le Chavalier, and Dast, as well as some I don’t know the names of. There is a lot of stencil work and many paste up’s, a rare freehand piece by Dast, and even some collage work from Frank Duval of FKDL.” Enjoy.

Copenhagen Street Art on Lock Down : Tejn

Danish Street Artist Tejn does some paste-ups periodically but the thing he is most known for is his welding. Also his “Lock On”, a practice of chaining his welded sculptures to the street with a bicycle lock. In much the same way New York Street Artist REVS has been leaving his welded tags around Brooklyn during the last decade, these Lock On’s and welded fake signs are much less ephemeral than what you may typically associate the term “street art” with.

Photographer and BSA contributor Sandra Hoj reports today of her newest findings on the streets of Copenhagen, where Tejn has been installing new work.

Here Ms. Hoj describes the new works;

“The scrap iron sculpture Lock On’s by Danish street artist Tejn are scattered all over Copenhagen at the moment. Whenever I stop to take a picture of one, someone comes up to me to alert me to another piece. These welded sculptures are made from salvaged iron collected from places like our cultural battlefields Christiania and the empty lot of Jagtvej 69, former location of the Youth House. Tejn welds the iron together and returns it to the streets chained and locked with found bike-locks”

Shepard Fairey in Copenhagen for “Your Ad Here” and 5 New Murals

Shepard Fairey has been in Copenhagen for a number of days for his new show Your Ad Here, which opens to the public today at V1 Gallery. Aside from the gallery installation, naturally, he and his team undertook the job of creating 5 gigantic murals on some of the remarkable vertical walls in this capital city of 2 million.

Photographer Sandra Hoj was on hand to witness the installation of one of them and she tells BSA about this piece:

“This piece is the second of five, located on Osterbro. We have an old tradition for murals here, but we rarely see street art of this magnitude. On the second day word had gotten around, and people were camping out in front, following the progress. It was a time consuming piece pasting, tearing and tinting, not even six guys working non stop were able to finish it in just one day. When I returned the next day, it was all done and the sun made it appear almost on fire, crazy beautiful” ~ Sandra Hoj

Check out the Flaming Cacti in Astor Place (NYC)

A bunch of light posts around the periphery of Astor Place have been tied with eye popping colors as part of a project by Animus Art. “Cable ties (or “zip ties”) are linked together in order to go around the circumference of the lampposts. This done thousands of times creates a brightly colored lamppost with thousands of little “hairs” (the ends of the cable ties), just like a cactus.”

This is a quick cell phone photo shot during this mornings wandering rush.

VHILS New Wall in Venice, CA (VIDEO)

Carlos Gonzalez shot this great video of Street Artist Vhils as he removed parts of a building to reveal the portrait inside. The Portuguese urban naturalist was in town in conjunction with the “European Bailout Show”, a print show at the Post No Bills showspace, across the street from the BSA/ThinkSpace show at CAVE next Friday “Street Art Saved My Life: 39 New York Stories“.

“Electric Projected” in Beacon, New York Saturday Night

Dan and Kalene run the gallery Open Space in Beacon, NY. They also love to bring the art outside in the summer and for the past few years they have been inviting many artists to come and paint on the abandoned buildings in this former industrial town along the Hudson River a little north of NYC. This year they are showing films and projections on the buildings and they invite you to come and watch and dance to live music from some local talents. Sounds like a great way enjoy natural and artistic beauty.

Coexisting in Copenhagen

It’s always interesting to try to unpack the cryptic meanings of Street Art pieces that suddenly appear. In the end, you have to depend on your own interpretation of pieces, because their authors are not around, and there are no helpful little placards to explain the piece to you. Over the weekend a new stencil appeared on the streets of Copenhagen and it caught our eye. It is a take on a popular emblem that promotes understanding and tolerance. According to Sandra Hoj, who runs the blog Classic Copenhagen, it’s “the best spelling of coexist I have seen to date”. In fact, if you troll around the internet you’ll find endless variations, but we wonder what this one is meant to say.

Perhaps the best known version of this combination of symbols, widely used by the rock group U2 and employed to foster tolerance between different people is on this bumper sticker from Peacemonger.org.

C = Islam
O = Peace symbol
E = Equality of sexes and orientations
X = Judaism
I = Pentacle of pagans/wiccans ( The five points represent earth, air, water, fire and the spirit. The circle connects them all)
S = Yin/Yang
T = Christianity

But as you might expect, there are a number of variations on the theme – like this one we found on Diary Of An Aspiring Nerd

According to the aspiring nerd, this is the breakdown for these symbols:

c – the Apple logo
o – the Ubuntu logo
e – the Debian logo
x- the skyOS logo
i – the ChromeOS logo as the dot
s – the Solaris logo over the “s”
t – the Windows logo
