LA Special: Images of the Week 04.17.11

It’s been a hot week in Los Angeles for the Brooklyn set, this much warmth and sun consecutively is unsettling for cold northerners accustomed to six months of winter and unbearable cold. The hundreds of museum goers who are lined up to enter the MOCA “Art in the Streets” show this morning mark the end of official events over the last week as well as the private openings, events, and walls that popped up everywhere.

This weeks interview with the streets is largely an interview with Daniel Lahoda, an Angelino who has procured walls for visiting and local street artists in a few neighborhoods of the city since 2009. With no membership fee or admission, everyone is able to see the work of a whole lot of street artists where it was originated thanks to his organizational and diplomatic skills and his vision. We were very fortunate to receive a personal tour of the walls from Daniel over the course of a couple of days, including the gargantuan piece finished this week by Dabs & Myla with How & Nosm and the still fresh 42nd LA Free Wall as it was being completed by Street Artist Aiko. Since so many artists were in town for the general craziness, expect to see some new walls going up shortly that will thrill and delight.

So here’s this weeks interview with the street featuring Aiko, Augustine Kofie, CA, Carl Rauschenbach, Crayola, Dabs & Myla, David Flores, DFace, X, Herakut, How & Nosm, JR, Kid Zoom, M-City, Nomade, Philip Lumbang, Ripo, Roa, Saber, and Shepard Fairey.

Red Hot and Street: “Art in the Streets” Brings Fire to MOCA

Yes, Banksy is here. The giant “Art in the Streets” show opening this weekend at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles gives a patch of real estate to the international man of mystery who has contributed greatly to the worldwide profile of this soon to be, maybe already, mainstream phenomenon known as street art. A smattering of his pranksterism is an absolute must for any show staking claim to the mantle of comprehensive survey and an excellent way to garner attention. But “Streets” gets it’s momentum by presenting a multi-torch colorful and explosive people’s history that began way before Banksy was born and likely will continue for a while after.

Apparently there is some kind of art show coming up on the west coast in April. Don’t know if you will be doing laundry or shopping for potted plants in the area at the time, but thought we’d let you know just in case you’re interested in this sort of thing.

Art in the Streets will showcase installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quinones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (Sao Paulo), and JR (Paris). MOCA’s exhibition will emphasize Los Angeles’s role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The exhibition will feature projects by influential local artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojorquez, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK.

A special emphasis will be placed on photographers and filmmakers who documented graffiti and street art culture including Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, James Prigoff, Steve Grody, Gusmano Cesaretti, Estevan Oriol, Ed Templeton, Larry Clark, Terry Richardson, and Spike Jonze. A comprehensive timeline illustrated with artwork, photography, video, and ephemera will provide further historical context for the exhibition.

Have you ever found that perfect dinette set thrown away on the sidewalk, except that the veneer has been chipped off because the table was used as a vegetable cutting board, and two of the chairs are missing legs? Ever have a grandiose Aunt who sees the end coming and thinks that you would be the perfect recipient of her mid-century shlock loveseat or crusted poly lampshade? Ever explored a haunted house that is about to fall on you and crush you to death?

A look at this chandalier by artist Monica Canilao just makes you happy. She has some ideas about what you might be able to do with those things you involuntarily have to drag home from the street. She and some friends made a cool chandelier that has an audio component when it is rotated.

Today’s wish comes from Los Angeles based photographer, videographer and BSA contributor Todd Mazer, who sends this image of Saber, the artist;

I wish for us to all remember, no matter how unbearable the load we find upon our shoulders, weightlessness can always be sparked by a moment of inspiration.

This new video from Nick Walker in an interview at the opening of his current show at Art Sensus Gallery contains two of the pieces he did first with us this summer on a some walls BSA secured for him in The People’s Republic of Brooklyn. The pieces also look great in the gallery, but the time hanging out with this talented and down-to-earth Street Artist was stellar and a really nice memory for summer 2010.

“Yes on 19”

An earnest text-based approach to Street Art, this duo treats their work more like Public Service Announcement than Street Art. The messages posted are in support of Proposition 19, a referendum to legalize use of marijuana this past Tuesday in California, which was voted against by 53.9% of the populace.

Interestingly, the first part of the video is a primer on how to make fresh wheat paste in your kitchen. Suddenly BSA is the cooking channel!

Saber, Shepard Fairey and American Pride

From the West Coast, where smoking pot is still illegal without a doctor’s prescription, Shepard Fairey posted excellent photos by Todd Mazer of a big mural he and Saber recently completed for a project with a name that sounds kind of familiar.

“Saber and I have been friends for over 10 years and previously collaborated on the Brooklyn Projects wall on Sunset in Echo Park. We also both recently coincidentally made art inspired by the American flag,” says Fairey.

Love Letters- Marriage Proposal in Philly

Street Artist Stephen Powers aka ESPO sends this video of an amorous train trip along the same elevated line that affords riders a birds-eye view of his “Love Letters” project in Philadelphia. On the way, the Beatles get involved, and we all start to cry.

Here’s the new video for the next chapter in adoration; Love Letters Syracuse, in a mid-sized city in the center of New York State.

Nomadé Assumes Throne In Burning Los Angeles

LA Freewalls is an ongoing project of legal walls for street artists in Los Angeles that began about a year ago. This is the second time that the LA-based street art collective known as Nomadé participates in LA Freewalls with one of their Roman odes.

Produced by Jetset Graffiti and Lahoda Fine Arts on 50,000 sf of the downtown walls, Nomadé joins other artists who have participated this year including Shepard Fairey, Saber, D*Face, Dabs and Myla, Atlas, Asylm and Andy Rios.

With installations that are at once swaggering, metaphorical, and self-deprecatory, the collective is precision minded in their attention to each detail of their dense productions. This installation honors the oft-admonished directive of seasoned street artists to have good placement – just check out the crumbling facade incorporated into the piece, and the echoing of the cornice detail. This soldier is sitting astride a deteriorating Rome, defending it even as it falls.

Says one the the Nomadé of the Freewalls experience,”It is a great project! We feel privileged to be among so many talented artists. We love seeing our fans, meeting people, passing out posters and stickers. Great fun.”

Saber on Dylan Ratigan Regarding, Um, Art

Now I know conservatives had art class in school too. That is, unless the funding was cut off because taxes had to be diverted elsewhere.

And certainly we have been through this whole “Flag” discussion a thousand times. You’re probably too young to remember the big deal during Daddy Bush’s run for president about flag burning.

And maybe you’ve heard about the artist Andres Serrano, who photographed a crucifix in a jar of his own urine for a piece called “Piss Christ”. Dude, symbols are appropriated into art on a daily basis. Outrageous? Yes. Protected speech? Yes. Another example of people who are shredding the constitution beating their chests about a symbol of patriotism. What do you think?

It’s just nice that the artist in this case, Saber, knows how to speak for himself regarding graffiti, the First Amendment, and the highly dysfunctional healthcare system in the U.S.
