The 2014 BSA Year in Images (VIDEO)

The 2014 BSA Year in Images (VIDEO)

Here it is! Our 2014 wrap up featuring favorite images of the year by Brooklyn Street Art’s Jaime Rojo.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Images-of-Year-2014-Jaime-Rojo-740-Screen-Shot-2014-12-16-at-9.55

Before our video roundup below here is the Street Art photographer’s favorite of the year: Ask Jaime Rojo, our illustrious editor of photography at BrooklynStreetArt.com , who takes thousands of photographs each year, to respond to a simple question: What was your favorite photo of the year?

For 2014 he has swift response: “The Kara Walker.” Not the art, but the artist posed before her art.

It was an impromptu portrait that he took with his iPhone when the artist unveiled her enormous sculpture at a small gathering of neighborhood locals and former workers of the Domino Sugar Factory, informal enough that Rojo didn’t even have his professional camera with him. Aside from aesthetics for him it was the fact that the artist herself was so approachable and agreed to pose for him briefly, even allowing him to direct her just a bit to get the shot, that made an imprint on his mind and heart.

Of course the sculpture is gone and so is the building that was housing it for that matter – the large-scale public project presented by Creative Time was occupying this space as the last act before its destruction. The artist herself has probably moved on to her next kick-ass project after thousands of people stood in long lines along Kent Avenue in Brooklyn to see her astounding indictment-tribute-bereavement-celebration in a hulking warehouse through May and June.

But the photo remains.

And Rojo feels very lucky to have been able to seize that quintessential New York moment: the artist in silhouette before her own image, her own work, her own outward expression of an inner world.

Now, for the Video

And our holiday gift to you for five years running, here is the brand new video of favorite images of graffiti and Street Art by Brooklyn Street Art’s editor of photography, Jaime Rojo.

Of a few thousand these 129 shots fly smoothly by as a visual survey; a cross section of graffiti, street art, and the resurgence of mural art that continues to take hold. As usual, all manner of art-making is on display as you wander your city’s streets. Also as usual, we prefer the autonomous free-range unsolicited, unsanctioned type of Street Art because that’s what got us hooked as artists, and ultimately, it is the only truly uncensored stuff that has a free spirit and can hold a mirror up to us. But you have to hand it to the muralists – whether “permissioned” or outright commissioned, some people are challenging themselves creatively and still taking risks.

Once again these artists gave us impetus to continue doing what we are doing and above all made us love this city even more and the art and the artists who produce it. We hope you dig it too.

Brooklyn Street Art 2014 Images of the Year by Jaime Rojo includes the following artists;

2Face, Aakash Nihalani, Adam Fujita, Adnate, Amanda Marie, Andreco, Anthony Lister, Arnaud Montagard, Art is Trash, Ben Eine, Bikismo, Blek Le Rat, Bly, Cake, Caratoes, Case Maclaim, Chris Stain, Cleon Peterson, Clet, Clint Mario, Col Wallnuts, Conor Harrington, Cost, Crummy Gummy, Dain, Dal East, Damien Mitchell, Damon, Dan Witz, Dasic, Don’t Fret, Dot Dot Dot, Eelco Virus, EKG, El Sol 25, Elbow Toe, Etam Cru, Ewok, Faring Purth, Gilf!, Hama Woods, Hellbent, Hiss, Hitnes, HOTTEA, Icy & Sot, Jana & JS, Jason Coatney, Jef Aerosol, Jilly Ballistic, Joe Iurato, JR, Judith Supine, Kaff Eine, Kashink, Krakenkhan, Kuma, Li Hill, LMNOPI, London Kaye, Mais Menos, Mark Samsonovich, Martha Cooper, Maya Hayuk, Miss Me, Mover, Mr. Prvrt, Mr. Toll, Myth, Nenao, Nick Walker, Olek, Paper Skaters, Patty Smith, Pixel Pancho, Poster Boy, Pyramid Oracle, QRST, Rubin 415, Sampsa, Sean 9 Lugo, Sebs, Sego, Seher One, Sexer, Skewville, SmitheOne, Sober, Sonni, Specter, SpY, Square, Stay Fly, Stik, Stikki Peaches, Stikman, Swil, Swoon, Texas, Tilt, Tracy168, Trashbird, Vexta, Vinz, Willow, Wolfe Works, Wolftits, X-O, Zed1.

Remixing The Face in a Stinky Underground Subway Hallway

A walk through the neglected and crumbling grime-caked subway stations of New York City, with their epically peeling paint and the smell of smeared human feces rushing you through hallways to your next train, can be a nauseating and dispiriting.  Mayors come and go, but rats and garbage remain, helping New York to “keep it real”.

Poster Boy (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Thankfully, despite continually rising Metrocard rates you are now treated to ever more advertisements on ever more walls, and the occasional ad-remixing prankster appears to keep things in focus, or disarray.  You may not have money for the admission to museums, but here you can take in this publicly curated interactive aspect of the expanding commercial gallery, and even affect the conversation.

In the connecting walkway between 6th and 7th Avenue on 14th Street you can usually hear some good music because of the enclosed reverberating tunnel effect that is free of of train disruption. Right now on display are a series of promotional posters for another TV program involving attractive people judging  others on their attractiveness.

In this locally targeted remix of the campaign, a blade-wielding passerby has given them a facelift. It’s a simple matter of switching selected portions of sticky vinyl, a technique that was popularized by a Street Artist/collective named Posterboy a couple of years ago. Sometimes it is effective. Other times, it fails. Either way, it catches your eye as you hold your nose.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, featuring Aiko, Cost, KAWS, Leon Reid IV, Mint & Serf, Nick Walker, Phlegm, Poster Boy, REVS, Swampy, and Wing.

We start off the review with this pretty amazing and magical new installation by Street Artist Phlegm in a children’s playground at the Fulton housing project. He also hit a gate and a quick wall while he was in New York, but this series will be taking kids on rides through their imaginations for a few years to come.

Fun Friday 11.11.11

Fun Friday 11.11.11

I think I missed the morning rush today because I hit the street earlier than usual… and got a seat on the subway (!) because I woke up at 5 a.m. thinking about Papandreou, Berlusconi, Merkel, Obama, and the 3 ring circus shaping up as the 2012 election. The great thing about worldwide impending calamity is, political hypocrisy and economic depression makes artists dig deeper for ways to portray both. That’s why we’re starting today’s Fun Friday with hi-larious satire by the number 16 puncher of all time, Mike Tyson. Always look at the sunny side peepul!

1. CAIN! Mike Tyson for Herman Cain 2012
2. K-Guy’s solo show “Iconic Irrigation”

Poster Boy in Brooklyn at Might Tanaka Saturday

There is only one, or maybe there are many, Poster Boy/s. The subterranean subway poster slicing hasn’t been so apparent for a minute, but maybe it’s because PB has been slicing at the old kitchen table in preparation for a proper show. “Not for Prophet” is the title, summoning up the Pharisees, the tax man, and the folks down on Wall Street. Let’s see who and what gets cut.

Mighty Tanaka Gallery Presents: “Not for Prophet” Poster Boy Solo Show (Brooklyn, NY)

Mighty Tanaka presents:

Not For Prophet

A solo show by Poster Boy

Mighty Tanaka is back! We’ve moved our gallery to a new location, and we’re delighted to announce our grand re-opening!

Living in a metropolis like New York City, we’re constantly bombarded with a magnitude of imagery and advertisements from every angle.  The inescapable chains of consumerism tempts the mind through the guise of fake polished smiles and subconscious messages – and one artist collective is prepared to stand up to the onslaught of commercialism: Poster Boy. Armed only with a razor blade, renegade street artist Poster Boy’s collage work reinterprets the advertisements around us with an ironic social commentary that teeters in the grey area of the law.

Poster Boy received international press earlier this year when a high profile solo show at Trinity College in Connecticut was canceled for potential legality issues. While the media has demonized Poster Boy’s artwork, there exists a progressive dialogue between consumer and product without the sugar-coating.   Poster Boy’s artwork becomes a conduit, channeling raw emotions and frustration through a medium that is accessible for all to interpret.

Not For Prophet is an uncensored insight into the world of Poster Boy. Exhibiting an array of prints, ‘zines and other iconic subject matter, the artwork is a rare peek into the mind of a true rebel.

OPENING RECEPTION:

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

6:00PM – 10:00PM

(Show closes Dec 4, 2011)

In case you don’t already know:

Poster Boy is a political street artist(s) from Brooklyn, New York. Poster Boy is known for spontaneously altering and collaging street and subway billboards with only a razor. The work ranges from incisive social commentary to satire to toilet humor, but like all unsanctioned graffiti and street art, it is considered vandalism and thus deemed illegal. All the while, the corporate graffiti that bombards our senses and pollutes our visual environment with advertisements remains unquestioned. This hypocrisy is the driving force behind Poster Boy’s work. In turn, the viewer is forced to consider the difference between what is legal and what is right.

Skin Deep Beauty on the Subway in NYC : Poster Boy Interventions?

The Reality-Show-Industrial-Complex continues to warp everyone’s perception of reality with its brain cell melting fusillade of advertising everywhere you turn. Street billboards, banner ads, barking taxi cab screens, and bone-headed subway posters spill bilious candy coated banality upon bystanders and passersby with entreaties to experience the misadventures of buxom babes and the buff boys who bang them.

You have to wonder how these funhouse images affect the self-perception of girls and boys and women and men who are surrounded daily by them. You will not escape the visual assault as you ride captive on the trains to your job or school or museum or library or the unemployment office – as  the vast tentacles of the entertainment industry reach ever further in search of a market.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that citizenry doesn’t talk back.

brooklyn-street-art-poster-boy-jaime-rojo-04-11-web-3Poster Boy (photo © Jaime Rojo)

From Keith Haring in the 80s to Poster Boy (s) and LUDO and a number of non street artists in the last couple of years, there is an occasional attempt to  steer the conversation, stem the tide and claim the eyeballs and attention on the subway, if just for a minute. Some artists feel that the subways are a fair playground and an instant gallery, to the chagrin of those who see their art interventions as crimes or at least, damaging to profits.

brooklyn-street-art-poster-boy-jaime-rojo-04-11-web-2

Poster Boy (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Recently we spotted a series of ads with images of the new “celebrity” class marred with the tiniest “interventions” that ring of Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kreuger and even William Burroughs. Whether these are the work of Poster Boy or the Poster Boys he hoped to inspire, the placement short circuits the messaging and questions how women are being portrayed. Ultimately these little interventions are  just a finger in the whole.

“Cash For Your Warhol” is Now A Print

Plowing grandly through the intersection of Street Art and consumerism mockery, satirist Street Artist Hargo took his ongoing joke “Cash for your Warhol” to billboards of Miami during the art gleefest that is Art Basel in December. Usually relegated to plastic prefab signs artfully nailed to telephone poles of empty lots and main thoroughfares, Hargo took out giant Out Of Home billboards to “advertise” the services of a fictional art buyer who is happy to help you unload those onerous Warhols just laying around the house for cold hard cash munney, honey. To celebrate this installation in Miami’s un-toniest district, Wynwood, the BLDG is releasing this print of a billboard by the street’s most famous Warhol appraiser, Hargo. The new piece entitled “CFYW, 14th Street, Miami”, is based on one of several installations viewed by the art loving masses who engorged themselves with edgy street art culture during the visual feast that takes place every year in southern Florida. Hargo and The BLDG concur that the legacy of this epic install should live far beyond the reaches of Basel and, thusly, history has been made.

brooklyn-street-art-cash-for-you-warhol-hargo-02-11
“In addition to putting up a bunch of street signs, Cash For Your Warhol took out billboards in Miami in December during the art fairs. The BLDG took one of my photographs of the one on 14th Street (shot before Poster Boy co-opted it – insert smiley face here) and turned it into an image suitable for framing. They have previously done a bunch of prints with Street Artists including The London Police and Cleon Peterson. It’s my second print with The BLDG, and I think this one definitely lives up to their high standards. BTW, the CFYW hotline has been flooded with calls since the Miami installation and the calls are still coming in. Apparently billboards work pretty well getting the message out” ~ Hargo

Brooklyn Street Art: 2010 Year In Images (VIDEO)

We’re very grateful for a wildly prolific year of Street Art as it continued to explode all over New York (and a lot of other places too). For one full year we’ve been granted the gift of seeing art on the streets and countless moments of inspiration. Whether you are rich or poor in your pocket, the creative spirit on the street in New York makes you rich in your heart and mind.

To the New York City artists that make this city a lot more alive every day we say thank you.

To the artists from all over world that passed through we say thank you.

To our colleagues and peers for their support and enthusiasm we say thank you.

To the gallery owners and curators for providing the artists a place to show their stuff and for providing all of us a safe place to gather, talk, share art, laugh, enjoy great music and free booze we say thank you.

To our project collaborators for sharing your talents and insights and opinions and for keeping the flame alive we say thank you.

And finally to our friends, readers and fans; Our hearts go out to you for lighting the way and for cheering us on. Thank you.

Each Sunday we featured Images of the Week, and we painfully narrowed that field to about 100 pieces in this quick video. It’s not an encyclopedia, it’s collage of our own. We remember the moment of discovery, the mood, the light and the day when we photographed them. For us it’s inspiration in this whacked out city that is always on the move.

The following artists are featured in the video and  are listed here in alphabetical order:

Aakash Nihalani,Bansky, Barry McGee, Bask ,Bast, Beau, MBW, Bishop ,Boxi, Cake, The Dude Company, Chris RWK, Chris Stain, Dain, Dan Witz ,Dolk ,El Mac, El Sol 25, Elbow Toe, Faile, Feral,  Overunder, Gaia, General Howe, Hellbent, Hush, Imminent Disaster, Jeff Aerosol, Jeff Soto, JMR ,Judith Supine ,K-Guy ,Labrona, Lister, Lucy McLauchlan, Ludo, Armsrock, MCity, Miso, Momo, Nick Walker, Nina Pandolfo, NohjColey, Nosm, Ariz, How, Tats Cru, Os Gemeos, Futura, Pisa 73, Poster Boy, QRST, Remi Rough, Stormie Mills, Retna, Roa, Ron English, Sever, She 155, Shepard Fairey ,Specter, Sten & Lex, Samson, Surge I, Sweet Toof, Swoon, Tes One, Tip Toe, Tristan Eaton, Trusto Corp, Typo, Various and Gould, Veng RWK, ECB, White Cocoa, Wing, WK Interact, Yote.
