Poster Boy: “The War Of Art” Book Launch. NYC. Miami. Culver City.London

Poster Boy. "The War Of Art"
Poster Boy. “The War Of Art”

As you may know the Poster Boy book,  The War of Art, came out this year. The release of this book has given a few of us the opportunity do something much more significant. At The War of Art book launch on Saturday, Aug. 28th, we will officially kick off a legal defense fund for artists.

Kids Are Rallying Against The Empire (K.A.R.A.T.E.) is a grass roots effort we hope to eventually turn into a non-profit organization. Sadly, when dealing with the legal system most artists don’t know, understand, or are intimidated into forgoing their rights. Artists are often poorly represented in court and do not have financial access to proper counsel. K.A.R.A.T.E. is committed to helping artists defend themselves in court for art-related crimes conceived in public space.

Even at its infancy K.A.R.A.T.E. has managed to get Henry Matyjewicz, a Poster Boy participant, out of prison on appeal only two weeks after being sentenced to 11months by a superior court in New York. Mr. Matyjewicz is now being represented by world class civil rights lawyer, Ron Kuby. Because of K.A.R.A.T.E. Mr. Matyjewicz now stands a fighting chance in court.

I’m officially inviting you to The War of Art book release party. Whether you come to support Poster Boy or K.A.R.A.T.E. I’m hoping to see you there. Personally, I think supporting a legal defense fund is an obligation for those who say they’re supporters of graf and street art, besides the fact that it’s long overdue.

See you there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26296445@N05/4910264171/

Email us at karatemeat@gmail.com if you’d like to know more about the fund.

Signed copies of the book along with special edition prints are available through nycposterboy@gmail.com. A portion of the sales will go to the K.A.R.A.T.E fund.

Peace,

Poster Boy

June 5 – July 3, 2010

July 10 – August 7, 2010

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 10, 2010, 7-9pm

For Immediate Release:

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to present THE UNCOVERING, a powerful cross section of new photography by Serbian native Boogie. The exhibition comprises a series of limited edition silver gelatin, chromogenic and archival pigment prints whose thematic material considers the space, sensation and narrative depth between endings and new beginnings.

There will be an opening reception for THE UNCOVERING on Saturday, July 10 from 7 to 9pm with the artist in attendance. The exhibition will run through August 7.

Born and raised in the city of Belgrade, Boogie emerged as a documenter of Yugoslavia’s civil
war of the 1990s, capturing through his lens the realities of the violent rebellion that ransacked the nation around him. These early experiences shaped his intensely sober artistic voice and dark perspective of human existence. Upon moving to New York City in 1998, this attraction to hardship and chaos transitioned to a visual exploration of the streets and homes of Brooklyn, presenting gang members, prostitutes and junkies in an astonishingly honest, familiar manner.

Subsequent journeys have taken him to cities such as Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Istanbul, Cuba, and
Mexico.

THE UNCOVERING is both an extension and a departure from Boogie’s previous bodies of
work, reflecting a new phase in his personal life and professional evolution. Having recently
returned home to Belgrade for the birth of his son, his experimentation with new color palettes in several of his works engenders a potent sense of renewal. The vibrancy of these photographs enhances the dialogue initiated by the breathtaking black and white portraits for which he is more widely recognized.

Boogie’s reach in THE UNCOVERING is broad, but cohesive – images of vandalized property, storm clouds, public housing, youth and the elderly both stand alone and chronicle a more extensive, multi-layered story. As a photographer, Boogie is singular in his ability to remove his presence as the mediator between the subjects of his work and those viewing them from without.

His illumination of the complexity of the human condition without the imposition of his
own ego or ideologies presents a more compelling foundation for the contemplation of his
weighty subject matter and the socio-economic, philosophical and emotional currents that press from beneath.

Boogie currently lives and works between Brooklyn and Belgrade. He has published five
monographs: IT’S ALL GOOD (powerHouse Books, 2006), BOOGIE (powerHouse Books,
2007), SAO PAULO (Upper Playground, 2008), ISTANBUL (Upper Playground, 2008) and
BELGRADE BELONGS TO ME (powerHouse Books, 2008). He has shot for many high profile clients and has been published in world renowned publications, including Time Magazine, The New York Times, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Flaunt, Vibe, Source, Maxim and PDN.

Prior solo exhibitions have taken place in Paris, New York, Tokyo and Istanbul, however Boogie claims that his biggest achievement to date is being a father to Maya and Aleksandar, the two most photographed children in the world.

Elisa and Seth: The Dynamic Duo “Books” You at Carmichael Gallery (CA)

Hands up, the new sheriffs of Culver City saw you lustily ruffling those pages with your flirting fingers!

Opening Saturday night, “Booked” at Carmichael Gallery

An unusual confluence of art and artists and the books that love them, this show satisfies your yearning for adventure and mystery, and more conventional pursuits like oggling and drooling. The art of reading tactile 3-D books has not completely been supplanted by glowing rectangles that are poked and prodded – much like the art of photography and painting, we were all silly to think they ever could have been replaced.

There’s nothing like pouring over a big fat book, page after page, staring and stalling, drifting and imagining expansive vistas on an overstuffed couch on a Sunday afternoon, or even Saturday night after many cocktails at a kitchen table, bleary and carnivorous for images.

But I gush.

Dan Witz Donates “Dark Doings” to Do Just the Opposite

Dan Witz has been painting for just over 3 decades since moving from Chicago to New York to study, and he has both a healthy fine art career and has garnered a wide swath of respect for his work on the street. In the piece Dan donated to the auction, it is evident why.

A realist, Dan seeks ways to master space and light with his work – as a street artist over many years, Dan has toyed with the obvious parts of the urban environment that you normally stroll by unthinkingly, subverting normal expectation.  Part of the “Dark Doings” series he began on the street last year, this piece snaps you out of your daily doze as you walk by it affixed to a steel door.

“Did I just see that?”

What lurks there on just the other side of the window is disturbing, and you may need to become involved.

Dan Witz is Doing Dark Things in West Hollywood

Dan Witz is Doing Dark Things in West Hollywood

Dan touches up some fingers on his new installation at Carmichael Gallery (image courtesy Carmichael)

You’ve walked by his work a hundred times on the street in plain view.  No really, you probably have, and didn’t know it.  Dan Witz specializes in detailed work that when fully realized, can be be easy to miss.

"Dark Doings" is getting a lot of attention for Carmichael Gallery

“Dark Doings” is getting a lot of attention along North LaBrea Avenue.

A Chicago native, Witz has been in New York since he was an art-school punk at Cooper Union during a drug deranged haze that reigned in the economically bombed-out Lower East Side at the dawn of the Reagan Revolution.  Graffiti art was expanding and morphing into many styles as this thinking-man explored an anti-graffiti that did anything but seek attention for it’s own sake.

gallery

Gallery preparations are underway for the show. (image courtesy Carmichael)

Over the years Dan has specialized in conceptual pranks, street interventions, and Dutch master inspired palm-sized oil paintings.  While inspired by graffiti writers as a student, he instead practiced a more studied craft on the street that almost asked to be overlooked. Much of his work has adorned quietly, a subtle strong commentary to those who would observe.

Tomorrow at Carmichael Gallery the prolific Witz, now from Brooklyn, will be expanding on a series he began a few years ago that was meant to draw attention to the new boom in soul-less building design in “up-and-coming” neighborhoods like Williamsburg.  The fake exhaust vents, placed appropriately along the facades of “ugly” buildings, feature fingers and gloved hands pressing between the grates in an act of escape.

Can you keep a secret? (Dan Witz) (image courtesy the artist)

“Dark Doings”, the new show, takes the experiment a step further to the safety windows that beckon from steel doors in industrial areas. Attached in such a realistic manner, you may think that a woman has her face pressed up against the glass from inside.  Or you may not notice his work in plain view.

Brooklyn Street Art: Dan, my front doors have those same square wire-veined windows! One night a drunk neighbor couldn’t find his key so he smashed one with a can of coke and there were little pieces of glass all over the floor. Your people definitely look trapped in there. Little portholes of desperation. Or is that just me?
Dan Witz:
I like that story. But I’d change it to little portals of desperation.

Dan did a special installation this week in L.A. for Halloween. Um, scary (Dan Witz) (image courtesy Carmichael)

Brooklyn Street Art: Sometimes your pieces on the street are so well camouflaged that people will not know they are there. Would you rather that your work is discovered or looked over?
Dan Witz:
I know it’s perverse and probably not in my best self-interest but I love the idea of thousands of people walking by my pieces every day and not seeing them. Eventually though the law of averages (I put up so damned many of them) will catch up with you and you’ll see one. Then I’m hoping you’ll go, ‘Holy shit!” and begin to wonder what else you’ve been missing out there.

Dark doings definitely happening in the gallery (Dan Witz) (image courtesy Carmichael)

Dark doings definitely happening in the gallery (Dan Witz) (image courtesy Carmichael)

Brooklyn Street Art: You like to be outdoors, and many of your pieces in Brooklyn are about people trying to get out through vents of ugly new buildings. Is this work autobiographical in any way?

Dan Witz: The Ugly new Buildings projects is autobiographical inasmuch as I live in the neighborhood that these arrogant architectural abominations have been inflicted upon. The subtext of the piece was never one of escape, but more of frustration and powerlessness. As a street artist I take what’s happening on my own streets very personally.

(Dan Witz) (photo Jaime Rojo)

Another project was to re-create street signs that contain characters or body parts in them, like this one with a scuba diver. (Dan Witz) (photo Jaime Rojo)

Brooklyn Street Art: “Dark Doings” still retains a punk rock flavor. And yet, so much of your work seems luminous and glowing and warm. Does a punk ever lose that rebellious dark side?

Dan Witz: It’s true that much of my youth was spent romanticizing the dark side. I believed that the truth could only be found by a violent rejection of the status quo. I still believe this, especially concerning creativity, but the truth about the so called dark side is that it’s mostly a pose and that the rest is ultimately sad and is the graveyard of a lot of wasted talent.

I’m just glad I made it back to report on it with my faculties (somewhat) intact. At some point after I hit thirty, I noticed that all I wanted to paint was light, and I needed to make it as warm and luminous and spiritually nourishing as I could. Not too ‘hip’ a career concept one would think, but somehow this turned out to be a rebellious act as well–at least for me. I can’t claim the metaphor was intentional but it’s not the first time my work has benefitted from such a suspiciously lucky coincidence.

London Police and Dan Baldwin at Carmichael (LA)

The London Police
Brothers in Arms
September 10 – October 1
Opening reception: Thursday, September 10, 2009

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of all new Hollywood-themed paintings, video and photography by British artist collective The London Police. Internationally recognized for their artwork, toy design and street interventions, this is their first solo show with Carmichael Gallery.

“Brothers in Arms” is a celebration of The London Police’s ten year anniversary. The show features works on canvases, a photographic montage, a site-specific installation and a short film documenting the artists’ creative process. The show’s title reflects both the film (a social experiment about personal space and the artistic and private challenges presented while handcuffed to another person) and the brotherly friendship of partners Chaz and Bob, who have withstood a decade of adventures around the world to present their most focused and exciting body of work yet. This new series of boldly monochromatic pieces pay homage to the city of angels and the classic films of their childhood, such as “Back to the Future” and “Star Wars”. Recognizable imagery is integrated into the symbolic London Police world of smiling characters and futuristic cityscapes. Building upon successful shows in London and Amsterdam during the spring, the collective’s synthesis of high and low culture in “Brothers in Arms” allows for a greater conversation of aesthetics, psychology and globalization.

Dan Baldwin
Disillusion
September 10 – October 1
Opening reception: Thursday, September 10, 2009

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings and ceramics by English artist Dan Baldwin. This is Baldwin’s debut US solo exhibition and his first with Carmichael Gallery.

Fifteen paintings, four ceramic vases and an exclusive, limited edition print compose Disillusion, Baldwin’s most mature and provocative body of work to date. His portrayal of a fantastic cosmos in which pop cultural icons, myths and symbolic imagery collide presents a heightened yet informed criticism of contemporary life. Baldwin began this work immediately following Dead Innocent, his successful solo exhibition at Forster Gallery, London, in September, 2008. Whilst the artistic through-line is evident, it is equally apparent that Baldwin has grown and developed significantly over the past twelve months, both technically and emotionally. The impact of personal and global events has effected a distinct shift from last year’s delicate, cheering palette and themes of love and beauty to reveal a different side to the artist – combining harsh fragmentation, coarse realism and devastated innocence, the new work is an intense fusion of visceral eye candy which shocks, entices and delights.
