James Marshall DALEK “The Redistribution of Destruction”

A quick look at new works by James Marshall aka Dalek for his show, “The Redistribution of Destruction”. His bright colors and geometric op art is bent through the lens of Murakami and yet glows occasionally with the hallucinatory play of light that Turrel can emanate.

These new pieces are more minimal than we are used to seeing from Dalek and perhaps indicate a comfort with minimalism, and all the courage that implies.

Impeccable, precise geometry, crisply rendered forms, all radiating energy. Please step into the light.

The street provides a forum from all dialogue and Street Artists can be sometimes divided into categories after you survey the expanse of expression. We’ve been tracking the geometry of abstraction for the last decade as an aesthetic counterbalance to the more free form gestural markings that are it’s more prevalent neighbors. The abstract direction continues to garner attention and you can get a good look at it’s past and present at two New York shows opening today, and learn more about it’s global movement in a recently published book by Cedar Lewisohn.

The Opera Gallery new show in Manhattan titled “Abstractions” opens today to the general public. This show will examine the abstract movement from the 1940s through present day with artists that range from Miro and Matta to Bast and Saber.

Dan and Kalene have been on the Street Art scene for a decade, have opened many doors to and championed Street Artists with their Electric Windows project. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation today announced the final details of its RE:DEFINE benefit art exhibition and auction to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus, including the full list of contributing artists. Event curators The Future Tense have assembled an eclectic roster of 30 original works valued at over $1m from some of the world’s most exciting, dynamic and sometimes controversial artists, including painting, photography, sculpture and a large-scale public installation in downtown Dallas by street artist Ben Eine. The 30 contributing artists are as follows:

Hosted at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas, MTV RE:DEFINE will be open to the public from September 16 – 23 with a live auction of all 30 works taking place at an exclusive reception on September 24, hosted by Simon de Pury, Chairman of Phillips de Pury & Company. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, which encourages, energizes and empowers young people who are involved in HIV and AIDS awareness, education and prevention campaigns. Simon de Pury, Chairman of Phillips de Pury & Company said, “Phillips de Pury is thrilled to support the fabulous initiative of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and of the Goss-Michael Foundation and The Future Tense.”

The evening will culminate in a live performance by alt-rock phenom, The Boxer Rebellion who are due to begin a major 22-date tour of North America in October to promote their latest album, The Cold Still. Tennessee-born Nathan Nicholson, lead vocalist for The Boxer Rebellion said, “The Boxer Rebellion are proud to support the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and feel privileged to play at this ground-breaking RE:DEFINE benefit event. We take our social responsibilities very seriously, and to be part of an event with such immense social and artistic merit – aimed at empowering young people all over the world to fight HIV and AIDS – is a real honor for us.”

The Pantheon Catalog Release Party: Saturday in Brooklyn

About a year ago Daniel Feral told us about this idea he had for a show at the Donnell Library across from MOMA to draw attention to the history of graff and Street Art in New York. It seemed like a pretty vast undertaking at the time, and in fact, the project gradually and quickly ballooned and incorporated much of the community and helped capture this moment in history as well as give perspective to the evolution that preceded it. With partner Joyce Manolo and a cast of hundreds, Mr. Feral has taken a deep dive and produced a tome that will be used for reference for years to come, along with his own diagrammatic explanation of the evolution of Graffiti and Street Art in the context of other 20th Century art movements.

This 426-page catalog is a hybrid of scholarly journal, popular magazine, and graff zine. 33 artists from the 1970s through today tell their own histories, in their own words and pictures, while local writers and photographers give an overview of the cultural milieu. The catalog includes a dedication to Rammellzee by Charlie Ahearn, essay on the Feral Diagram by Daniel Feral, and Street Art in the 2000s by Steven P. Harrington with photographs by Jaime Rojo, in addition to 20 essays, 20 interviews and over 400 images from the efforts of over 30 individuals.

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to present a 2 person exhibition with James Marshall (Dalek) and Greg Lamarche.

Exhibiting these distinct artists together creates a powerful dynamism based on the collision of James Marshall’s graphic geometries with Greg Lamarche’s typographic savvy and cut-paper collages. The cross-pollination of visual and conceptual traits that occurs when viewing both bodies of work at once produces a new, combined aesthetic that is wholly unlike either Marshall or Lamarche’s artistic achievements on their own. That said, it would be an oversight to discount the similar visual and structural methodologies upon which these artists have built their practices.

The works on display, with their robust colours and sinuous lines, are a testament to the leading position Marshall and Lamarche occupy at the frontier of the new abstraction. The current impulse back towards abstracted forms and the spectral buzz of cleverly combined colours is brought to fruition by these artists. What Geometic Balance candidly demonstrates is that Marshall and Lamarche are successfully recalibrating the relationship between figure and abstraction without losing the primacy and critical content of their work.

Our weekly interview with the streets also wanders into a few Art Fairs this week as many Street Artists were in town showing studio work and getting up on walls. It was great to meet so many people who are on fire about this grassroots, interactive, DIY, in-your-eyeballs world of street art and to talk about where it is going. While there were a slew of Street Artists banging a luan wall at Fountain, we also got to see some peeps at Scope and Volta.

Images Of The Week 02.27.11 – Art Fairs Bring New Street Art to Walls

Brooklyn and NYC are Getting Hit! – New stuff is being installed on walls this week from Nick Walker, How & Nosm, TesOne, Bask, Tristan Eaton, Gaia, Clown Soldier, Hellbent, Chris Stain, and more. It’s a hot week in late winter.

We interrupt our regular weekly program of new shots of the street with IN PROGRESS new shots on the street by Nick Walker and How and Nosm and Bask.

This week art fairs will draw huge crowds of collectors and fans, bringing a number of Street Artists with spray paint and brush and wheatpaste in hand to hit up walls with their new pieces. From Fountain to Scope to Volta to Verge to Independent , the city is poppin with new pieces and new installations by scheduled Street Artists, and most likely a fair amount that isn’t scheduled on the streets too.

As reported here Friday BSA was with Nick Walker this week as he installed “Anonymity” a brand new stencil in a couple bricked up windows in Brooklyn. While in New York he’s also hit up walls inside and outside the Cooper Square Hotel in Manhattan (see below).

As he worked he talked about the significance of this new piece:

Nick Walker: This piece is all about anonymity. When you are a graffiti artist some people play the anonymity card. But then there are those who play the anonymity card one minute and the next minute you see them on the Internet not playing the anonymity game. This piece reflects what I see around me and I see other artists doing. I think that if you are going to play the anonymity game you have to play it from the start and never slip up. For a lot of the artists that I see now is “on-off” thing.

Southern Street Art talents Bask and TesOne are braving the cold temps in Brooklyn right now to hit walls with How and Nosm and Tristan Eaton as part of Contra Projects, a newly formed alliance of Street Artists who will be traveling around the globe in 2011 lead by visionary Eaton and his equally dynamic brother Matthew.

Opening at Scope this week the roster includes the above with Mr. Jago, DFace, Thomas Thewes, Ron English, James Marshall and TrustoCorp. Before the big Scope opening some of these cats will be hitting walls in BK and here are here are the first progress shots of the wall by How and Nosm from yesterday. They don’t have a name for it yet – suggestions are welcome! Finally a shot of Bask as he traces out the new piece.
