Maya Hayuk at Cooper Cole (Toronto)

Street Artist, Fine Artist and Brooklyn resident Maya Hayuk has a solo show at the Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto, Canada is now open to the general public. Ms. Hayuk paintings are saturated with color, catching the prism from the crystal and permuting it into a multitude of geometrically inspired patterns and shapes, realize on canvas and walls across the land. Crisply precise, or improvised and free wheeling, Hayuk let’s her mind and her palette run with enthusiasm for the raw creative spirit.

Brooklyn Busts Open Studio Doors for “GO” Courtesy Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum continues to plug into community and show love for the blossomed artists neighborhoods that are transforming Brooklyn into the true creative powerhouse rivaling Manhattan, which is looking so “last century” across the river. BAM is a loved museum that regularly gets “it” by bringing community in, thanks to the efforts of many, including the talented curatorial team headed by Sharon Matt Atkins who opens the conversation and knows how to listen to the beat on the street and make a huge institution relevant to a new generation.

This time Ms. Atkins and the museum’s Chief of Technology, Shelley Bernstein are taking  inspiration from the thousands of artists who work and live in Brooklyn, creating the largest open studios event we’ve heard of in DUMBO, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint, Gowanus, and Red Hook this weekend. You can vote for your favorites by nominating three artists for inclusion in an exhibition at the museum. The museum’s curators then will visit the ten artists who received the most nominations and they will select two or more artists to have their work shown at the Brooklyn Museum for and Exhibition opening on December 1.

1735 artists have responded to this call. How many can you visit? You have this Saturday and Sunday to GO AND SEE ART.

Street Artists Push Past Comfort Levels to Create New Show and Video

As the post- “Citizens United” restructuring of civil society gets into full swing and democracy is effectively hollowed out before our eyes, Street Artists Hugh Leeman, Eddie Colla, and D Young V are contemplating an eventual collapse of society and what it might look like – and have created an art show about it.

“Epilogue is an immersive installation based art show,” explains Leeman as he describes the almost cinematic way they are seeing their presentation and the promotional video we are debuting for them today. Not explicitly horrifying, the implications of a lawless violent society that no longer feels “futuristic” makes this trailer uncomfortable and a breath of fresh air.

“What we did with the video was a new feel for us in that we did not show the artwork nor do a traditional narrated artist interview but instead looked at the video as a piece of art itself,” says Leeman as he talks how the three Street Artists really pushed their work for the show to imagine what it would be like to start making art after we’ve burned everything down. Maybe they’re just sticking to the theme or testing their individual resourcefulness but it is interesting to see them skipping the oil paints and canvasses and instead choosing reclaimed billboards, fire stencils, even hand painted assault rifles for the varied display.

Are these guys really rattling their Jungian subconsciousness with a death of Western society foretold or have they been spending a lot of time on NetFlix in the apocalypse section? If you hear Hugh describe the preparation they’ve undertaken at Hold Up Art, it all sounds pretty serious. “Its processes and concept have been inspired by America’s gun loving culture, the corporate behemoths considered “too big to fail”, and another pending financial meltdown. It has pushed the three of us as artists away from what we have come to identify as our own individual styles.” We give them credit for going there, and for challenging us in a new way to go with them. The murkier the answers, the more alive the imagination can be when triggered by these symbols and images.

Cryptik “Sacred Syllables” at Hold Up Art

BSA contributor Carlos Gonzalez recently checked out the golden hued installations by Street Artist Cryptik at Hold Up Art in LA. Here he shares with us his observations and photos.

Street Artist Cryptik just opened with a new solo show, “Sacred Syllables” at Hold Up Art Gallery, located in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Little Tokyo. The enigmatic, L.A.-based artist has been hitting the streets of for some time with his signature style which includes references to Eastern, Buddhist and Hindu religions. Unlike other street artists, Cryptik’s art holds a spiritual tone that is rarely seen in a city like Los Angeles. Without being overtly religious, the work speaks to those who are looking for more than the flashy, bright palette you might normally associate with Street Art.

This exhibit is an perfect example of this mindset. As soon as you enter the gallery space, you feel like you are entering an alley somewhere in India or a market in a distant part of Asia. Still, Cryptik’s artwork is the main attraction. Utilizing a variety of materials ranging from candles to wood, the collection of work gracefully walks a thin line between street art and spiritual text. The style incorporates a precise use of Sanskrit lettering which he has perfected through out the years, and his lines seem flawless as letters create circular patterns inside the confines of a wooden frame. Without jumping at you, screaming for attention, Cryptik’s work rewards a careful observer.

Hold Up Art presents a new exhibition, Sacred Syllables, by Cryptik, whose bold calligraphy style and eastern-influenced graphics have become a Los Angeles street art staple. Inspired by the philosophies of the far-east and the historical importance placed on the written word, Cryptik’s wheat paste posters, stickers, and t-shirts, which feature traditional mantras and poetry, have become an artistic movement.

“The Cryptik Movement is a public art campaign dedicated to helping humanity evolve towards greater awareness and understanding through the use of compelling, iconic imagery that demands both scrutiny and reverie,” writes Cryptik in his manifesto. “The purpose of this organization is to facilitate the development of a deeper, more meaningful philosophy of life. Our main objective is to challenge people to think of other possibilities and to see a different reality; one that encompasses many ideologies, philosophies, and belief systems in order to help us better understand our place in the universe.”

Free of religious or political messages, Cryptik’s art is meant to provoke contemplation and act as a catalyst for a shift in consciousness. With an interest in concepts that don’t necessarily fit into any scientific paradigms, Cryptik plans to expand his exploration of words and imagery to include more esoteric and occult philosophies.

“If Art is a reflection of the artist’s soul, it is up to the artist to understand themselves before the audience can,” says Hold Up Art’s curator Brian Lee. “Cryptik is one of the very few artists in the street art scene who truly understands who he is, and how to visually communicate his message to an audience.”

Cryptik will be joined at the opening of Sacred Syllables by the Hit + Run Crew, who will be custom screen-printing throughout the event. Early arrival is suggested to guarantee custom printed shirt availability.

Wooooo Hoooooooo! It’s Friday in Brooklyn! Great news in the mailbox from the postman this morning about a big Keith Haring exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum this April “Keith Haring: 1978-1982”. Guess it was meant to coincide with the big “Art in the Streets” exhibit that was moving from LA MOCA to Brooklyn in 2012 but was cancelled recently. That’s okay, we still get Keith, a patron saint of Street Art. And we are completely convinced that “Art in the Streets” will be coming to New York, so don’t be surprised.

In Street Arts’ latest chapter, the storytellers are hitting up walls with all manner of influences and methods. More than ever before, formally trained and self taught fine artists are skipping the gallery route and taking their work directly to the public, creating cultural mash-ups and highly personal stories of their own, altering the character of this scene once again. Eclectic, individual, and as D.I.Y. as you can imagine, these Street Artists may have knowledge of who came before them or not, but they are determined to be a part of one art scene that is perceived as authentic, relevant, and alive.

Join Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo, authors (“Brooklyn Street Art”, and “Street Art New York”, published by Prestel/Random House) and founders of Brooklyn Street Art (BrooklynStreetArt.com) and contributing Street Art writers for The Huffington Post ARTS, as they show and compare examples of work from New York’s streets today. Then join a lively discussion in a Q&A session to help explore this storytelling practice and discuss how it may be evolving what we have been calling “Street Art” for the last decade.

Fantasmas is the first solo exhibition by prolific Mexican street artist Kraken. Consisting of twenty-one pieces, ranging from giclee reproductions to handmade silkscreen prints and original drawings, Fantasmas showcases the unique style and voice of this talented artist. The exhibit’s opening reception will feature a live performance by Adrian Terrazas Gonzalez (The Mars Volta) with Jazztec.

Known for his dark, gothic and somewhat disturbing images, Kraken is a highly sought after commercial graphics artist in Mexico. His work has been used to brand products from alcoholic beverages to sneakers, from apparel lines to bands. As a member of Mexico’s E3 Collective, Kraken has been involved in numerous group shows around the world. His work has appeared in an Amnesty International art book to raise money for the cause in Darfur, and he has had his work featured in an installation by the Centro Cultural España. Kraken’s work is often recognized for his use of repetitive graphics and what could be called an obsession with eyes.

“I am inspired by different things when I work; comic books, movies, but mostly emotions. I get a lot of inspiration from reading psychological case studies of serial killers,” shares Kraken, “That’s where I got the idea of deforming humanity with unnatural light and dark colors, and repetitive imagery, like eyes. The eyes represent different things in my work, but lately they represent anxiety. I have this notion that your eyes see things differently when you’re having a panic attack; your stomach aches and your palms itch. It’s like those parts of your body are filled with eyes.”

Hold Up Art presents the work of Los Angeles-based artist Gosha Levochkin, whose latest collection of ink and watercolor works entitled CLUSTER MESS will be on display from September 3 through October 5.  Twenty-seven original paintings, depicting a surreal urban environment and the characters that dwell there, will fill the space. This exhibition will also feature a collaboration between Gosha and Cyrcle, the Los Angeles street art collective whose “cut it out” works have taken the city by storm.

CLUSTER MESS refers to Gosha’s approach to the urban landscape, something that has always intrigued him. His work often strives to capture the aging of a building through the effects of time or use, and how people live among the dense clutter of the city and make it work, while still maintaining an underlying sense of humor. His fans have come to expect playful and thought-provoking compositions. This new collection of paintings from Gosha is marked by a conscious departure from his previous works in palette and narrative.

“My palette is different this time. I wanted to add more colors and I kind of let them do their own thing,” says Gosha of CLUSTER MESS. “I also added a storyline to my characters which is something that I haven’t done before. My installation will be a good example of showing how everything is disconnected yet connected at the same time.”

Gosha’s goal with this new exhibit is to make the viewer want to learn more about the characters; to imagine themselves in the world that he’s created.

Check out the Flaming Cacti in Astor Place (NYC)

A bunch of light posts around the periphery of Astor Place have been tied with eye popping colors as part of a project by Animus Art. “Cable ties (or “zip ties”) are linked together in order to go around the circumference of the lampposts.  This done thousands of times creates a brightly colored lamppost with thousands of little “hairs” (the ends of the cable ties), just like a cactus.”

This is a quick cell phone photo shot during this mornings wandering rush.

VHILS New Wall in Venice, CA (VIDEO)

Carlos Gonzalez shot this great video of Street Artist Vhils as he removed parts of a building to reveal the portrait inside. The Portuguese urban naturalist was in town in conjunction with the “European Bailout Show”, a print show at the Post No Bills showspace, across the street from the BSA/ThinkSpace show at CAVE next Friday “Street Art Saved My Life: 39 New York Stories“.

Shepard Fairey Posts “Your Ad Here” at V1 Gallery (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Street Artist Shepard Fairey has been in Copenhagen all week putting up gigantic murals while hanging his new  show “Your Ad Here” at the V1 Gallery.

“Electric Projected” in Beacon, New York Saturday Night

Dan and Kalene run the gallery Open Space in Beacon, NY. They also love to bring the art outside in the summer and for the past few years they have been inviting many artists to come and paint on the abandoned buildings in this former industrial town along the Hudson River a little north of NYC. This year they are showing films and projections on the buildings and they invite you to come and watch and dance to live music from some local talents. Sounds like a great way enjoy natural and artistic beauty.

Hold Up Art is proud to present “Subversive Holiday,” the first solo exhibition for the prolific wheat paste artist Septerhed. Known for his plurality of designs and characters, Septerhed has earned a respected place in the street art circles of Los Angeles. Though his background in illustration and graphic design helped to inform his visual aesthetics, it is Septerhed’s sarcasm and sense of humor that make his images not only enjoyable, but memorable. Generally, Septerhed’s images tend to originate from a digital composition, and are reproduced through either silk-screening, or by hand with acrylic paints. “Subversive Holiday” features a closer examination of three of Septerhed’s most recognizable characters (The GEO-HEDs, Toxins and Wolves), explaining the existence and nuances of each style as a specific mode of design. The exhibition will also feature a limited edition giclee print, “Don’t Mind Me” released exclusively through Hold Up Art.

“Septerhed’s activity and anonymity on the streets was what first caught my eye. I had fallen in love with his “geo heads” long before I even knew his name; bold, bright and always stood out in a sea of pasted posters,” shares Hold Up Art curator Brian Lee. “When I finally saw a body of his work at a street art show a year ago, I was blown away by the diversity of imagery, yet it all seemed to make sense within the context of Septerhed. I’m very excited to see ‘subversive holiday’, and the reaction it draws from our audience, the work he has put into this show is inspiring.”

Although Septerhed, has been an artist his entire life, he has only become an obsessive slave to his artwork over the last 5 years. A graduate of Otis College of Art and Design, Septerhed utilized his knowledge of communication arts to create his own personal brand of visual self-politics. His work leverages the symbolism that is ever present within modern society, along with cultural associations of love and hate, and life and death. Ultimately, Septerhed’s work explores his personal struggle, and aims to represent his allergic reaction to reality and fate.
