Photos of 2023 on BSA – #8: “The Marathon Continues”

We’re celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of the next by thanking BSA Readers, Friends, and Family for your support in 2023. Picked by our followers, these photos are the heavily circulated and “liked” selections of the year – shot by our Editor of Photography, Jaime Rojo. We’re sharing a new one every day to celebrate all our good times together, our hope for the future, and our love for the street. Happy Holidays Everyone!

The photo here is that of a mural in LA featuring an image by photographer Estevan Oriol, vividly capturing the resilience of everyday individuals. Estevan, an LA native with Mexican heritage, focuses his lens on the city’s urban landscapes, lowrider culture, street life, and its residents. Renowned for his dedication to authentically and respectfully representing those often overlooked or misrepresented, Oriol’s work is a testament to the genuine stories of these communities.

The subject of this portrait is Nipsey Hussle, a rapper and community activist who was celebrated for lyrically chronicling life in Los Angeles, especially his experiences in the Crenshaw neighborhood. His untimely passing in 2019 sparked profound sorrow among fans, fellow artists, and locals. In a time when many face increasing challenges, including homelessness and limited opportunities, his admirers often reference his enduring philosophy, “The Marathon Continues.” The phrase embodies a commitment to sustained effort to reach justice, and a tenacious will to continue long term no matter the obstacles. Sprinters need not apply.

BSA Images Of The Week: 09.17.23/Los Angeles

Welcome to BSA Images of the Week!

This week, we found ourselves amidst the vibrant energy of Los Angeles, uncovering hidden gems and reconnecting with old friends. One highlight was a visit to Roger Gastman’s dynamic ‘Beyond the Streets’ gallery, which celebrated its first year with a captivating show featuring Tim Conlon, HuskMitNavn, and Pose. A thrilling moment was when we had the privilege of moderating a panel that featured the artistic brilliance of Layer Cake’s duo – Patrick Hartl and Christian Hundertmark (C100), the iconic Chaz Bojórquez, recognized as the godfather of graffiti and the epitome of California Chicano artistry, and our host, the ever-passionate artist and activist, Shepard Fairey. The venue buzzed with artists and connoisseurs, each directly or deeply ingrained in the world of art in the streets. And as LA’s streets echoed with the spirit of Mexican Independence Day, the youthful beats of Mexican music star Peso Pluma serenaded us from passing cars. Truly, a week to remember.

Here is our weekly interview with the street: this week featuring Shepard Fairey, Vhils, Invader, Keith Haring, Nychos, El Mac, Add Fuel, Praxis, Hueman, Estevan Oriol, Hijack, Tempt, David Howler, Loks Angeles, Kook, Madre, and Downtown Daniel.

“Beyond The Streets” Comes To Brooklyn in June

“Beyond The Streets” Comes To Brooklyn in June

Gastman’s Massive Graffiti and Street Art Show Arrives at Epicenter.

“I’m really excited to bring this show to New York,” says curator, graffiti historian and urban anthropologist Roger Gastman, “because the city plays such a pivotal role in the origin and evolution of the culture. The iconic images of covered subway cars made graffiti famous worldwide.”

He’s talking of course about “Beyond The Streets” the hybrid exhibition that he mounted in LA last year featuring the work of 150 who have proved to be pivotal to the evolution of a fifty year global people’s art movement that includes graffiti, street art, and urban contemporary art. Filling over 100,000 square feet of new space in Brooklyn, this two-floor cross-section survey will feature artworks by many of the same vandals, graffiti writers, Street Artists, and art activists who hit NYC streets, created dialogue with passersby, and were sometimes chased by the authorities. To see them showcased here is to recognize that there is not just one route to take – in fact there are many.

“We have an incredible roster of artists for New York,” Gastman tells us, “and a brand new space in Williamsburg that has a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline as our backdrop.” Notably the lineup includes artists whose work BSA has documented on the streets in this very same neighborhood over the past two decades, including Shepard Fairey, Faile, Swoon, Bast, Invader, Aiko, and others. Ironically the appearance of free-range Street Art in the neighborhood has been seriously diminished since that time.

The exhibition is one more verification that a significant portion of the scene is being widely recognized for its cultural contribution and value in the contemporary art canon – a significantly fluid scene fueled by discontent and a desire to short-circuit the established routes to audience appreciation. Like large survey shows elsewhere, the takeaway is the significant impact street culture and its tangential subcultures continues to have on the culture at large.

Gastman says the New York version of “Beyond The Streets” will take an additional interest at the role of music and art activism on the street, along with immersive installations, a tattoo parlor, a special Beastie Boys installation with artifacts and ephemera, a new 30th Anniversary Shepard Fairey project “Facing The Giant: 3 Decades of Dissent,” and large scale works by Gorilla Girls, Futura, Cleon Peterson, and Takashi Murakami.

More news coming on programming and events, but the important opening date to know right now is June 21st.

“All in all, it will make for a really special show this Summer,” says Gastman.

From the creators Julian Marshall and Alex Jablonski:

“Based on the true story of Shepard Fairey’s first act of street art, OBEY THE GIANT tells the story of a young skate punk challenging a big-city mayor and the powers-that-be at art school. Frustrated by his inability to gain respect within the confines of art school Shepard sets out to gain notoriety and acclaim by targeting the most powerful man in Providence, former Mayor Buddy Cianci. Risking expulsion and jail time Shepard plasters Andre the Giant’s face over the image of Cianci on a campaign billboard. As word of Shepard’s prank gets out, Shepard learns that art is a weapon and attention is both a blessing and a curse”.

Like Father, Like Son

Eriberto and Estevan Oriol

Opening Reception : Saturday, October 1, 2011, 6:00 – 9pm

Please RSVP to rsvp at carmichaelgallery dot com

Carmichael Gallery
5795 Washington Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232
USA

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce Like Father, Like Son, a retrospective survey of works by renowned Chicano, Los Angeles-based father and son photographers, Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The exhibition will comprise twenty-five limited edition prints from each photographer, including black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints.

Whilst often distinguished by a complex melange of memory, emotion and intimacy that can manifest itself in equally terrifying and wonderful forms, the relationship between a parent and his or her child is a particularly unique human exchange and can hardly be defined in generalized terms. For Eriberto and Estevan Oriol, who are often cited as two of the most important contemporary documentarians of urban, hip hop, lowrider and Latino culture, the deep familial tie they share extends into and only serves to empower the unique nature of their professional relationship and the intense puissance of their work. Whether viewed together or apart, the Oriols’ photography presents the multitudinous contours of Los Angeles and urban life through a piercing, visionary lens that lends a fascinating, almost hyperreal layer to the earthy, often confrontational authenticity of their subject matter.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the Oriols’ oeuvre to date when considered as a whole, as in Like Father, Like Son, is its ability to complement and contrast the talents and purports of each photographer. Both are long-time observers of city life and the experiences of its inhabitants; Eriberto, whose understanding of shape, line and shadow are key features of works such as LA Financial District, 2011, The Thinker, 1974, and Need A Helping Hand, 2000, which define with gut-wrenching elegance the struggle and strength of the poor and homeless in Downtown Los Angeles and San Diego, form an effective and deeply affecting concordance with Estevan’s depictions of these communities, who, in works such as Skid Row Body Bag, 2009, Chestnut Family, 1998, and Pepper’s Shopping Cart, 2011, combines brutal honesty with rich sagacity to uncover a subtle, fleeting beauty that might otherwise have disappeared unnoticed.

Other series represented in Like Father, Like Son include the photographers’ varied and illuminating portrayals of LA’s lowrider culture, dramatized to distinction in Eriberto’s color photograph Las Vegas Lifestyle Car , 2004, and the city’s gang life, exposed in a singularly vulnerable light in Estevan’s Bullet Holes and Stab Wounds, 2002, and Shaving the Dome, 2008. In addition to these and Estevan’s portraits of celebrities, including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Dennis Hopper, both Oriols will present a selection of their exquisite, oft-touted photographs of LA women, from Eriberto’s Traffic Jam 110 FWY, 2011, to Estevan’s Erlinda, 2003.

There will be an opening reception for Like Father, Like Son on Saturday, October 1 from 6 to 9pm with both Eriberto and Estevan Oriol in attendance. The exhibition will run through October 29, 2011.

About the Artists:

Eriberto Oriol

Born in Indio, CA, Eriberto Oriol grew up in the San Diego neighborhood of Barrio Logan before relocating to Los Angeles, his home now for over three decades. In addition to expanding his internationally recognized portfolio of photographs of LA Latino street life, street art and graffiti, a talent he would later pass down to son Estevan, he and wife Angelica Gonzalez-Oriol are enthusiastic, proactive supporters of the local art scene, which led them to curate the first major exhibition of graffiti art in Los Angeles in 1989. In addition to the recognition the Oriols received from the Los Angeles City Council for the show’s contribution to the community and the praise from numerous media outlets, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles acquired a featured artwork for its permanent collection.

Select galleries that have exhibited Eriberto’s work to date include Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Chinese American Museum of Los Angeles, Crewest Gallery, Los Angeles and Anno Domini, San Jose, while commercial projects have ranged from work for the NBA, Nike, Vans and T Mobil to Jokerbrand, LA Metro, Altamont Apparel and Warner Bros. In addition to featuring in Los Angeles: Portrait of a City (Kevin Starr, David L. Ulin, Jim Heimann, TASCHEN Books, 2009), Eriberto and his work have been profiled in The Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, Daily Telegraph, Downtown News – Los Angeles, Vogue Australia, Mass Appeal, tasj magazine, Swindle, Thrasher, Hypebeast, Rebel Ink, Juxtapoz, Oversight, Warp, Scratch, Rime, Fader Magazine, TCLY (thecitylovesyou.com), Format Magazine and Freshness Mag, amongst numerous other national and international print and online media outlets. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Estevan Oriol

From hip-hop club bouncer to tour manager for Cypress Hill and House of Pain in the late 1980s and early 1990s to the internationally celebrated professional photographer, director and urban lifestyle entrepreneur he is recognized as today, Estevan Oriol’s talent, fame and success only continue to grow. 1992 saw the beginning of what quickly grew to be an influential relationship with best friend, fellow Soul Assassin associate and now world-famous tattoo artist, Mister Cartoon. Together, they created the increasingly lucrative and high-profile Joker Brand Clothing, just one of Estevan’s ventures in the clothing industry, which range from Not Guilty, produced with Everlast, and his solo line Scandalous to his eponymous line with Upper Playground. In 1995, however, Eriberto gave his son a camera, and what began as a means of capturing life on tour led to a career that has snapped up images of everyone from gang members and graffiti artists to hip hop stars and Hollywood celebrities.

Select galleries and institutions that have exhibited Estevan’s work include Rivera Gallery, Los Angeles, Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, FIFTY24SF, San Francisco, FIFTY24PDX, Portland, Lab 101, Los Angeles and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in whose highly acclaimed, controversial blockbuster exhibition Art In The Streets his work contributed an integral depiction of Los Angeles’ part in the worldwide evolution of graffiti, street art, skater, tattoo and related countercultures. In 2009, Italian print house Drago published LA Woman, a 112 page, hardback book that celebrates a decade of Estevan’s provocative, sensitive and alluring documentation of the city’s less-photographed female population.

Highly sought-after for both high-profile commercial projects and private commissions, celebrities photographed by Estevan include Xzibit, 50 Cent, Kim Kardashian, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Dennis Hopper, Mena Suvari, Dr. Dre, Blink 182, Eminem, Adrien Brody, Forrest Whittaker and Juliette Lewis. In addition to shooting campaigns for companies such as Cadillac, Nike and Rockford Fosgate and directing new media projects for My Cadillac Stories, MTV and Apple Computer, he has designed album covers and/or directed music videos for artists such as Eminem, Cypress Hill, Blink 182, Snoop Dogg and Tech N9ne.

Estevan and his work have been profiled in Rolling Stone, Complex, FHM, GQ, Details, Vibe, The Fader, Mass Appeal, Hypebeast, Juxtapoz, High Snobiety, Daily du Jour, Fecal Face, Risen Magazine, Acclaim Magazine, tasj magazine and The Source, amongst numerous other national and international print and online media outlets. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Red Hot and Street: “Art in the Streets” Brings Fire to MOCA

brooklyn-street-art-banksy-jaime-rojo-moca-art-in-the-streets-huffpost-04-11-web-15Banksy’s Reliquary (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Yes, Banksy is here. The giant “Art in the Streets” show opening this weekend at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles gives a patch of real estate to the international man of mystery who has contributed greatly to the worldwide profile of this soon to be, maybe already, mainstream phenomenon known as street art. A smattering of his pranksterism is an absolute must for any show staking claim to the mantle of comprehensive survey and an excellent way to garner attention. But “Streets” gets it’s momentum by presenting a multi-torch colorful and explosive people’s history that began way before Banksy was born and likely will continue for a while after.

Monica Canilao; You Light Up My Life

Have you ever found that perfect dinette set thrown away on the sidewalk, except that the veneer has been chipped off because the table was used as a vegetable cutting board, and two of the chairs are missing legs? Ever have a grandiose Aunt who sees the end coming and thinks that you would be the perfect recipient of her mid-century shlock loveseat or crusted poly lampshade? Ever explored a haunted house that is about to fall on you and crush you to death?

A look at this chandalier by artist Monica Canilao just makes you happy. She has some ideas about what you might be able to do with those things you involuntarily have to drag home from the street. She and some friends made a cool chandelier that has an audio component when it is rotated.

“Don’t Ask Don’t blah blah blah”

You say Tomato

2 things about this trailer for an upcoming movie about graffiti in New York…
1. We cover street art, which is similar but I’m not expert on graff – so don’t ask me
for some great opinion on the matter
2. I love the dramatic tension created in the fast cutting of opinions here, and then the sudden swelling of heroic Viking choruses of fat ladies in strapless gowns and pointy Viking Helmets  comes out of nowhere from the dark ages, creating visions of brutish butchering armies in armor with V-shaped shields in one hand and cans of spray paint in the other.  Onward, Upward!
