Up Close And Personal: RJ Curates Street Artists Into an Upper West Side Apartment (NYC)

In the intimacy of a private residence in the Manhattan suburbs of UWS, RJ Rushmore of Vandalog fame along with Keith Schweitzer and Mike Glatzer of newly minted M.A.N.Y. have mounted a fresh new open house show just off Broadway. An exquisitely curated show with marquee names and a few newbies the selection is solid in quality and unusual in it’s scale.

Mr. Hellbent says of the show: “The best part of making a show like this is to finally see it up on the wall and the way that everything interacts. I have been thinking of these pieces as parts of a quilt, different fabrics being stitched together. The different colors, floral stencils, animals, and jaw bones melding together and playing off one another, even down to the different depths and sizes of panels, but until it was hung they were just pieces, not yet a whole. Its given me an opportunity to show the different elements that i am working with and how they have grown out of one another and to display all the different carvings and stencils patterns together, where on the street they are separated in different locations.”

Matt Siren and My Plastic Heart present “Ghost in the Machine” (NYC)

25 spirits in the material world have made tributes to Street Artist Matt Siren’s Ghost Girl character for this show on the Lower East Side tonight. The custom toy show transforms the character that appears in doorways around New York, each putting its own unique spin on his character.

Gallery Heist is pleased to announce the opening for its One Year Anniversary

Show, “Till Death Do Us Part” a group exhibition celebrating a year of work

since the gallery’s inception. The opening will be held on Saturday, November

13, 2010 from 7-11pm. The exhibition will be located at the Gallery Heist Annex

at 1036 Hyde Street.

A new venue specific to the anniversary show.

The anniversary show will present the work of emerging and established contemporary figures from the Bay Area, as well as artists hailing from New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Melbourne. Along with paintings, photographs, mixed media works, and video, the show will include an installation by Ryan de la Hoz and a performance piece by Adam Rozan (of the Oakland Museum), as well as musical performances by Mark Aubert and TM.

Guest curators Allison and Garrison Buxton, of AdHoc gallery in NYC, will be co-curating and co-hosting the exhibition.

Featured artists include; Brett Amory, Adam Caldwell, Seth Armstrong, Mario Wagner, David Choong Lee, Oliver Vernon, Sean Desmond, Mike Giant, Mike Kershner, Gaia, Adam Flores, Justin Lavato, Ryan De La Hoz, Henry Gunderson, Mario Ayala, Roman Koval, Adam Rozan, Maja Ruznic, Ludo, Doodles, Helen Bayly, Miso, Daryll Peirce, Deborah Yoon, Allison Buxton, Garrison Buxton, Ezra Li Eismont, Shawn Whisenant and Bunnie Reise. These artists have come to represent what is and will continue to be the ethos of Gallery Heist.

The main location of Gallery Heist, at 679 Geary Street will feature an installation that will provide an opportunity for viewers to observe the obscured process of curating and running an art gallery.

Included in the installation will be various pieces of ephemera from the first stages of opening the gallery through the thought processes behind every show; photos, videos, notes, business cards, correspondence between the curators and artists, writers, editors, and figures within the art community will be displayed.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the artists will have access to several walls around the city to use as their canvases and to promote the show while contributing to the burgeoning local art movements. This process will be documented and displayed during the exhibition.

The exhibition will be on view at 1036 Hyde Street from Saturday November 13 – November 27, 2010. Viewing hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 4-8PM and by appointment. Gallery Heist is located at 679 Geary Street San Francisco, CA 94102.

Welling Court Mural Project Opens Over the Weekend in a Queens Community; Many Street Artists Contribute

There can be a bit of grand posturing around the word “community” especially by people (or corporations) who spend more time chasing the Gravy Train than climbing on the Love Train. And swimming in an acid-tongued media landscape that keeps saying we’re are a giant polarized society simply bubbling with animosity, you could be forgiven for not leaving your house, let alone breaking bread with your neighbor who is different.

New York people prove that lie to be wrong every day – we are a hugely diverse lot- our different mother tongues alone could lick a frosting bowl the size of Shea Stadium. And yet mysteriously all of us weird different kinds of people are all getting along with each other day after day – sometimes we even enjoy each other!

Welling Court Murals, a project with Street Artists in a neighborhood in Queens, New York, came to fruition on Saturday and the results were as colorful and eclectic as we are. While the people on the block barbecued and danced and played games, kids chased each other and rode their bikes and took many pictures of Street Artists doing their thing on the walls- spray cans, paint brushes, wheat paste, and markers busy.

Saturday was the “show day” for this project that the folks at Ad Hoc Art, with Alison and Garrison Buxton at the helm, have been “community organizing” for a long time. However, by no means is it the end of the project, as new friendships and alliances were forged and a neighborhood has a new panoply of street art to look at, ponder, and hopefully be inspired by.

The Welling Court Mural Project was one of the most cohesive “community” events we’ve seen in a long time. Street Artists plus an engaged neighborhood of very nice people… delicious home-made foods, music from Latin America and India/Pakistan, adults, kids, painting, asking and answering myriad questions, posing for pictures in front of pieces — all proving again that the arts can bring people together. A sincere “Thank you” to Ad Hoc and Allison and Garrison and all the artists for putting your best out there for others to share.

Welcome to the Jungle: HELLBENT’s Wild Kingdom

The self-styled punk rock street artist in the studio PREPPING FOR HIS PARTICIPATION IN AD HOC ART’S “WILLOUGHBY WINDOWS V 2.0”

Welcome to the Jungle; Hellbent’s Wild Kingdom at Willoughby VWindows 2.0

For the second year in a row, Ad Hoc is curating a block of defunct store window displays in a busted part of downtown Brooklyn with a series of installations by street artists. Opening officially tomorrow afternoon, the project brings to life a moribund block of 13 storefronts with 14 artists, each of whom have conjured themes from their imagination. A proactive public-friendly venture, WWII is yet another example of artists giving freely of their time and resources to encourage conversations and add color and character to our public space.

This year sagacious smart-mouth HELLBENT is bringing his set-designing skills, which are many, to bear upon an abandoned storefront. In what he describes as a nod to the wild untamed nature of urban living, street art, graffiti culture, and the original wild kingdom, Hellbent’s ferocious animals rage and hiss at viewers from deep inside a lush field of plastic vegetation. The backdrop is a myriad of psychedelic dripping wall flowers and a BP oil spill of black industrial soot.

The elephant, snakes, and hummingbirds are current favorites of Hellbent. To create heft and stability, he glued 2 layers of luan board together before sketching out the shapes and jigsawing them. The black painted surface is then carved out with a power drill and a lot more drill bits than you can imagine – as they only last 5-10 minutes before drilling. “It cost me over $150 in drill bits – because they wear out so fast doing this kind of work. I was chasing these drill bits around town and I sold out every hardware store in the immediate area getting these.”

Since graff is a predominately urban thing and we forget about animals and the wild, it’s a way to bring them back into the urban setting. They are like animals that are stuck in the city, like many people are.” (photo © Jaime Rojo)

A peek at the “ANGRY ELEPHANT”, peeking back at you. Hellbent, “These are kind of menacing animals… it feeds back into the graffiti and street art aggressive nature, the determination to get your work out. There is a lot of machismo out there so this work is kind of riffing on that. Like my name – it’s a play on words and on other themes – it sounds really fierce but it’s done in bubble letters, or a cursive hand, or in pastel colors – stuff like that.” (photo © Jaime Rojo)

The original model for the installation was quite a bit smaller than the final project installation.

So, what’s it like working on this larger scale? “It’s nice. It’s overwhelming. It’s a little overwhelming, a challenge, you know. I learn stuff as I go. I’ve learned stuff definitely. For example, how much stuff and materials it takes to make something like this. I got a lot of stuff donated from friends, and a number of friends helped me figure this out – I definitely didn’t do this by myself.”
