BSA-Images-Week-Nov2014

It’s a free-for-all bag of mushrooms this week – or psychedelic toads to lick, in the case of Don’t Fret, who starts us off with a 2014 NYC tourist dressed head to toe in an Ebola suit. Naturally, he still has a fanny pack. Also notable are the new bus stop takeovers by Spector, who makes his new and subtly startling installations more contextual than you’ve seen before.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Borf, Bunny M, Cali Killa, Don’t Fret, Eelco Virus, Esteban Del Valle, Evoke Fym, Gold Dust, Matthew Reid, June, Knarf, Meer Sau, Not Your Police Dept, SAMO, Senz, Specter, The Broke MC, and This is Awkward.

Black Book Gallery Presents: Borf “They Made A Desert And Called It Peace” (Denver, Colorado)

BORF

Borf “They Made A Desert And Called It Peace”

Opening Reception:
Friday, June 7th, 2013
6pm-11pm
Free & Open to the public
June 2013 marks our 3rd Anniversary!

Summer has arrived in Colorado and with it comes beautiful blue skies, long nights and the return of Borf. One of America’s most infamous and ingenious young artists; Borf is a part of all of us whether we like it or not. Borf represents for the rebellious and mischievous nature inherent in everyone yet expressed by few. Rarely will you find somebody with the ability to communicate in a visual context a message inside a message as effortlessly as Borf does.

In his solo show “They Made A Desert And Called It Peace” Borf will be exhibiting pieces from his critically lauded “Rothko’s Modern Life” series, as well as a new series of jokes painted on salvaged wood panels imported from Detroit. Both parts of the show reveal the artist’s wry humor as he grapples with some existential and societal qualms.

ICY & SOT “Made in Iran” (NYC)

Two Street Art brothers, Icy & Sot, born in Iran and encouraged by their parents to pursue their dreams and aspirations have ventured outside their country and landed in New York, their first foreign trip, their first international city, their first art show in which they were able to attend. “Made in Iran” is now open to the everybody at the Open House Gallery in Manhattan.

The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) mid-career survey of San Francisco based artist Barry McGee.  From the press release: “Using a visual vocabulary that borrows elements from comics, hobo art, sign painting, and other sources, McGee’s work addresses a range of issues, from individual survival and social malaise to alternative forms of community”. This exhibition is now open to the general public.

BORF Solo in Newcastle (UK)

Detroit native BORF has traveled to England for his solo show “Walls Are Two-Sided” at The Outsiders Newcastle. With this new body of work, Borf illustrates the derelict aspect of Detroit and elevates the decay to art by zeroing in on a detail of the building’s peeling and corroding facade and transporting that vision on to the canvas. The result in the words of the press release is: “Rothko talked about wrestling with opposing and competing elements to eventually discover an equilibrium, what he called a pocket of silence” says BORF. “For this show I was fighting through layers of ambivalence and opposites: graffiti as youth expression and Rothko as adult expression; the art market and property rights; education and improvisation, youth and adulthood.” This show is now open.

“Klimpt Illustrated” at Lazarides (London)

Gustav Klimt the famous Austrian painter is turning 150 years old and The Vienna Tourist Board has teamed with The Lazarides Gallery in London to give Klimt street creed in the hopes that younger audiences will start following him on Twitter to gain knowledge on the secrets of his longevity and hopefully on his craft as well. To this effect curator Sydney Ogidan tapped nine international artists to take inspiration from some of the master’s most iconic masterpieces and create their own paintings. The opening reception for this show “Klimt Illustrated” is tonight at Lazarides Gallery in SOHO.

Lush Does “Shitty Drawings in New York City”

We thought we noticed a change in the air when the Australian storm called LUSH landed on these shores. Well here he is, likely to offend a few uptight prone-to-nose-bleeds stiffs and even more likely to amuse a lot more of us loose New Yorkers. LUSH has been madly working on a series of drawings/illustrations for his show “Shitty Drawings In New York City” opening Saturday night at the Klughaus Gallery in Manhattan. Half political cartoons/ half comic book with a blunt appreciation of the mechanics of the male and female reproductive organs, LUSH’s commentary on social, political and popular culture can be right on the spot. Dimwits need not apply.

Shepard Fairey Does “Americana” (LA)

Shepard Fairey needs no introductions at this point in his career or this point in our dang blog. One can always be certain to find him busy at work and getting involved in as many projects as he can humanly fit in his schedule. Mr. Fairey is constantly looking for inspiration and finding it often in popular culture that is around and accessible to all of us. For his new show “Americana” opening tomorrow at the Perry Rubestein Gallery in Los Angeles the artist has created a new body of work inspired by the songs of the great artist-musician Neil Young.  Shepard has found material for his canvases in the songs of Mr. Young new album “Crazy Horse”.

The Outsiders Presents: Borf “Walls Are Two Sided” (Newcastle, UK)

Borf

The Outsiders Newcastle invite you to join us on the evening of Thursday 23rd August at the opening party for ‘Walls Are Two-Sided‘, the new solo exhibition by young American artist BORF. The event takes place from 6 ’til 9pm in the gallery at 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The most critically lauded young talent in urban art, BORF (AKA John Tsombikos) returns to The Outsiders Newcastle gallery. An exhibition exploring conflict, serenity and contradiction, Walls are Two-Sided features ten large canvases. All feature the artist’s charm, sensitivity and humour underlaid with yearning idealism and quiet but passionate anger. Five of the paintings are detailed close-ups of derelict houses in the artist’s resident town of Detroit, and a further five feature “old school” graffiti overlaid with colour fields in the style of late abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko.

“Rothko talked about wrestling with opposing and competing elements to eventually discover an equilibrium, what he called a pocket of silence” says BORF. “For this show I was fighting through layers of ambivalence and opposites: graffiti as youth expression and Rothko as adult expression; the art market and property rights; education and improvisation, youth and adulthood.”

The Outsiders Gallery Presents: BORF “See Something, Say Something” (Newcastle, UK)

BORF
brooklyn-street-art-borf-the-outsiders-gallery-newcastle

The Outsiders Newcastle invite you to join us on the evening of Thursday 20th October to celebrate the opening of ‘See Something, Say Something‘, the debut UK solo exhibition from young American artist BORF. The event takes place in the gallery at 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, from 6 ’til 9pm.

BORF is one of the brightest young talents in art. Heʼs an angry young man in the finest tradition but his refreshing work makes insurrection delectable.

Formerly a notorious Washington DC graffiti artist, 24 year-old BORF gracefully dodges street art clichés in his gallery shows. He favours watercolours, oil sticks, drawings, sculpture, photography and film over stencils and spray paint. Whereas BORFʼs subject matter is pitiful and angry, his manner is melancholic and idealistic. Rebellion has a romance once more.

See Something, Say Something‘ continues the theme of impassioned revolution against a crumbling status quo. In the city we find abstracted commuters opposite transgressive kids: the former are trying to make a living, the latter trying to live.

PRIVATE VIEW – Thursday 20th October, 6-9 pm, The Outsiders, 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3DE

Exhibition open to the public 21st October – 19th November, Tuesday – Saturday 12-6pm, admission free

Pics and Video From “Outside In” from Nuart and Martyn Reed

“Outside In” is a small scale but potent and polished presentation of a number of today’s international street artists in one austere exhibition in the port town of Stavanger, Norway.  Says Martyn Reed, founder of Nuart and director of this show, it’s also an answer to the selections of artists in the humongous graffiti and Street Art exhibition currently on view at MOCA in Los Angeles.

“We were looking at Deitch’s “Art in the Streets” and thought there were a few important artists missing. We were also a tad jealous so we thought we’d knock up our own little provincial version here in Stavanger, explains Reed. No exhibition of Street Art will ever be complete – that’s what the streets are for – but it is always exciting to see how the story is parlayed in different settings and locales.

“Outside In” Opens (Stavanger, Norway)

Martyn Reed the affable bad boy from Norway curates this new show of urban and street artists who are equally at home tackling antiquated etching techniques, watercolors, drawing and oil painting as they are with a spraycan and marker.  Says the impresario “On July 1st we’ll be opening one of Scandinavia’s, and certainly Norway’s, largest exhibitions dedicated to street and urban art.”

A silent auction to benefit the youth and family creative arts and mentoring programs of Free Arts NYC is being generously hosted by Ad Hoc Art on Friday, April 25th to celebrate the launch of “Brooklyn Street Art,” followed by a booty shakin after-party.

BROOKLYN, NY—Ad Hoc Art is thrilled to be hosting and supporting a special silent auction benefit Free Arts NYC and to celebrate the launch of Brooklyn Street Art, a new book of photographs by Jaime Rojo, designed by Steven P. Harrington, and published by Prestel.

Ad Hoc Art is generously donating their gallery space for the celebration and silent auction of approximately 25 works by well-known, emerging, and yet to be discovered artists who know no boundaries and follow no rules—their artistic turf is the public gallery of the Brooklyn streets.  The artists, whose work animates the pages of this new full-color book, are donating their original or editioned works to be bid up and auctioned off, with all proceeds from the winning sales going directly to benefit Free Arts NYC’s creative arts and mentoring programs for at-risk children and families in New York.

Some of the artists have participated in Free Arts NYC’s programs prior to this event and are creating original work to donate to this benefit event to generate significant support for Free Arts NYC.
