The Lenticular Puts It’s Glasses On

Edging closer to advertising slickness, this method of subtle perception jamming that certain street artists have been employing takes another step in this campaign by Amnesty International to draw attention to the American death row inmate Troy Davis. In this collaboration with the Berlin-based, three-person photographic street art collective Mentalgassi , the man’s visage is clear for just a half step as you pass. An apt description of this project, “Making the Invisible Visible”, the installation is an adaptation of Street Art that merits praise.

Welcome to Miami

Yes, Gaia is in Miami (above) along with a buttload of other untanned northerners, and actually Brooklyn has announced that it has closed for the weekend. Just kidding but, if you are looking for walls, you won’t have much competition in the BK this weekend, now that you think about it. There is a lot happening in Miami this weekend and even if you don’t go to any receptions or openings or velvet rope parties you can still have a blast seeing lots of art on the street. Okay, I’ll wait until some people in the back stop talking – I’m sure we all would like to get on with the project. Tony and Lindsay, do I need to split you two up?”

Art classes at school are just about the funnest thing there is – mostly because they combine work and play and imagination. Brooklyn Street Artist Specter has been making his own imaginary friends on the streets of Paris and Chicago this fall. To be more precise, he’s been making sisters – the ones he says he wished he could have when he was a kid.

The new series is called “Les Filles”, and it is “about my mate’s five sisters and my desire to have sisters my entire life. Now I feel like I have what I’ve always wanted,” explains Specter excitedly, as he contemplates eating some paste while Miss Pennywhistle writes something on the chalkboard.

To help Tom launch Contra Projects, Tristan and the Thunderdog team curated an exclusive group of artists and designed the Contra brand. Announcing the launch of CONTRA PROJECTS.

This year during Art Basel Miami 2010, Detroit artist Thomas Thewes Jr. of CPOP Gallery fame is launching a new art project featuring some of Street Art’s heavy weights from around the globe. The initiative titled ‘Contra Projects’ will launch at the 5 day Primary Flight mural project in the Wynwood District of Miami and features Ron English, Bask, James Marshall (Dalek), Tristan Eaton, Tes One, D*Face, Mr Jago, TrustoCorp and Thomas Thewes himself.

Contra Projects’ Primary Flight initiative will feature a variety of projects around Wynwood as listed below. Activities will take place from Thursday Dec. 2nd through Sunday Dec. 5th, from 12pm – 7pm

1. The Contra Tent – In the Courtyard of 297 NW 23rd. St. (Between NW 2nd Ave. & NW 5th Ave.) Wynwood.

The Contra Tent will be a lounge style tent with free refreshments (including limited edition Brisk Iced Tea cans designed by Tristan Eaton) as well as information on Contra Projects and their artists. The center piece of the tent will be a custom, fully functional, lowrider shopping cart by street art collective TrustoCorp.

2. Contra Mural – Wynwood in the center of Primary Flight

The Contra Projects mural will feature Ron English, Mr Jago, Thomas Thewes, Bask, Tes One and Tristan Eaton. Most Contra artists also have solo walls throughout Primary Flight, please check in at the Contra Projects tent for more information.

3. TrustoLand – In the Courtyard of 297 NW 23rd. St. (Between NW 2nd Ave. & NW 5th Ave.) Wynwood.

Trouble making street art group TrustoCorp takes it’s humorous slant on American Culture to new levels at Primary Flight Miami this year with the debut of ‘TRUSTOLAND’, a Coney Island style, outdoor installation of interactive, hand made and painted carnival games. Each game takes on American culture for better or worse with typical TrustoCorp sarcasm and satire. How participants play the games determine what prizes they win – yet just like Wall Street, even the losers win big. Highlights include ‘The TrustoCorp Immigration Office’ where contestants play for citizenship, the high-striker style ‘The Peace Keeper’ and ‘Drive-Thru Safari’ where players use an AK-47 BB Gun to shoot innocent burgers and hot dogs on the run. Prizes include limited edition, signed posters, badges and plush cheeseburgers!

Miami 2010: Some BSA Picks

The annual peregrination from all corners of the art world has begun to balmy Miami. Artists and the collectors who love them have converged in this friendly city to promote, sell, admire and make art during The Art Basel Art Fair.

Art Basel (Nov 30-Dec 5) is one of the most important art shows in the USA with about 250 art galleries showing more than 2000 artists from all over the world. Very impressive! Equally impressive are the satellite art fairs and events that orbit around. We’d like to point your attention to the art fairs and events that will include Urban and Street Art in their shows and to the organizations whose main focus is to celebrate and promote the work of Street Artists.

Check BSA out over the next few days for updates on who’s getting up in Miami.

PRIMARY FLIGHT

A favorite of BSA because of it’s accessibility to everyone, for the past three years Primary Flight has produced murals by hundreds of renowned artists and relative unknowns, easily gliding between Street Art and Graffiti culture and covering a ton of walls for the public to see. You may try to see it all in one day of zig-zagging the streets, but pack some energy bars.

Culminating in the largest curated street mural project in the world, the collective is now expanding beyond their Wynwood origins to launch their first-ever headquarters in the Design District.

“This year is about growth: Miami is set in motion, and Primary Flight paved the way,” says Books IIII Bischof, principal of Primary Flight. “Since our involvement, Wynwood has become a street art Mecca with legs of its own.”

The ART OF BASKETBALL

A creation of Billi Kid, NYC street artist, curator, life-long doodler, art enthusiast and design junkie, this show takes basketball backboards and repurposes them as art via skillz of a number of Street Artists whose work is regularly on BSA. The show is curated by Jim and Karla Murray.

LEADING STREET AND GRAFFITI ARTISTS
Public Works Department, announces its collaboration with the NBA to produce and curate 36 original street and graffiti artworks entitled the “Art of Basketball”. This extraordinary exhibition and event will open to the public on December 2nd and continue thru December 5th 2010, concurrent with Art Basel Miami, the leading art and cultural happening in North America. The exhibition and special events will take place in a dedicated venue located at 2048 NW Miami Court, in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami. A portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the artworks will benefit NBA Cares.

Scope Art Fair

Cutting edge contemporary is the moniker, and it is possible that the 10th year of SCOPE Art Show will turn out some exceptional surprises.

Cementing its future with an 80,000 square foot pavilion across the street from Art Miami, SCOPE Miami’s high-profile venue is centrally located in the heart of the Wynwood Gallery Arts District. Running concurrently with Art Basel Miami, SCOPE’s Midtown Miami home is just steps from The Rubell family collection, Margulies Collection at the Warehouse and Goldman Collection. Fountain Miami

A New York favorite, Fountain is the one we always check out for punk, funk, and unvarnished bolts of creativity. With a number of Brooklyn galleries, artists, and undercover rebels getting into this mix, you never know what you are getting, but there will be something mind blowing.

Fountain Miami 2010 exhibitors include Christina Ray, Front Room, Steven Gagnon, Leo Kesting , McCaig-Welles, Bego Art Project, Causey Contemporary, Jeanine Taylor Art Gallery, Cherie Dacko, Evo Love, Allison Berkoy, Greg Haberny, Phillip Simmons, We-Are-Familia, The Murder Lounge, Thaddeus Kwiat Projects, Wet Heat Project, Alice Chilton Gallery, Tinca Art, Francesca Arcilesi Fine Art, Susan Radau, Lindsey Brooke Wilner, and highly anticipated immersive video art projects presented by DCKT Contemporary. As logistical partners to the art fair, international art handlers Hedley’s Inc. will assist galleries in producing their large-scale installations.

Grace Exhibition Space, in conjunction with the Alice Chilton Gallery, will have 10 artists from around the world performing during the weekend’s evening events. Caveman robots and the full scale destruction of a car will be primary artist performances. First NYC celebrated downtown artist, Street Artist, and Brooklyn resident Kenny Scharf. We have his first installed roll-down pieces in Chelsea that are part of his city wide project “The Street Gallery” with Anonymous Gallery and we have him in progress doing his large-scale mural on the Houston Street wall.

British Street Artist K-Guy was recently in NYC for a show at the new Chelsea spot Indica Gallery, which is named after the original Indica Gallery in Mason’s Yard, London. His new piece for Amnesty International is called “Blood on your Hands”, pointedly incriminating the masters of industry who profit from child labor and other inhumanity.

Next it’s a brand new collaboration between Shin Shin and Wing. Both artists create a fantastic version of the natural world, insinuating themselves into Street Art milieus with still life compositions of flowers and animals.

Street Art Against War, Supports Vets in Chicago

Justseeds and IVAW collaborate on “Operation Exposure”.

“Operation Exposure: War is Trauma”, a coordinated Street Art action to raise awareness of the poor way veterans are treated after they are injured, took place on the streets of Chicago last week. Sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, the postering campaign took over public space that is usually reserved for encouraging citizens to think of themselves purely as consumers.

The wheat-pasting collaboration with Street Artists and war veterans tells of a suicide epidemic in the armed forces and the practice of re-deploying of troops multiple times despite serious debilitating injury, and the silent suffering of neighbors who are touched by our wars. Veterans, artists, and volunteers met in Rogers Park and divided into teams for the installation. They divided up posters that Justseeds had designed for IVAW and then hit the streets.

The block party in Bushwick provided by Factory Fresh Gallery and the app called All City turned out a number of new Brooklyn Street Art pieces on a block long installation, complete with friends, fans, and a taco stand. Included in the offering was this surprise collab with Faile and Bast, auspiciously appearing the morning of the event like a pre-Christmas gift wrapped in razor wire. The news of the piece travelled fast and while Ad Deville couldn’t find his red carpet, he did post a velvet rope to hold back the crowd. That didn’t stop Futura from climbing on top of his car to get the perfect shot.

And here we move to a British invasion of sorts with Geishas and Primates from Hush and K-Guy respectively. XAM has been installing some pretty cool looking bird houses around town equipped with LED lights on their porches that illuminate when the sun sets. Infinity and VUDU’s pieces for the Showpaper box project adds to the conversation on the street with a beaming signal tower atop the box.

K-Guy’s recent “Primates” piece, including this one that appears to be pretty fresh, have been appearing around Brooklyn suddenly. Apparently its meaning is reference to the growing perception of hypocrisy in the Catholic church, particularly as pertains to pedophilia coverups, its position on contraception, gay rights, among other issues.

And finally the 800 pound pink gorilla in the group, Samson from Albany, began his audacious cityscape project directly beside his hero/shero Sten & Lex. The neighbor next door liked it so much Samson will be back to continue the piece – which is part of a much grander scale piece on urban decay, development, and renewal that he hopes to stage in the future.

Rae McGrath at Brooklynite Saturday: Unconventional Conviction

The gallery is completely re-painted and Rae is standing on his head waiting for it to dry. Richard Hambleton New York — in London

James Brown was the Godfather of Soul, Aretha is the Queen of Soul, Michael was the King of Pop, and Jennifer Lopez is a judge on a TV talent show. Now we learn that one of New York’s first recognized street artists, having blanketed the L.E.S. with disconcerting shadow figures in the 1980s, is actually called “The Godfather of Street Art”. Thank Allah you don’t have to be the one in charge of handling these honorariums because you know that has got to be a thankless task. On the occasion of “Richard Hambleton New York”, The Dairy Gallery released this video.

Our weekly interview with the street narrows this week to show you photos of a visit to Brooklyn from French Street Artist “The Dude Company” and a cool shot of Lister at the end.

A glorious autumn day and room to experiment a bit on a rooftop in Brooklyn. BSA invited The Dude Co. to put up an installation on a rooftop in Brooklyn and he happily and giddily obliged. The space was open to his interpretation and he decided to try out a repetition across the middle expanse as tribute to one of the best American actresses this country has given to the world, Gena Rowlands, who turned 80 this summer.

The repetition of her head in the installation is a nod to her depiction of a person unglued and in turmoil as her life swirls nervously beyond her control; Rolands’ emotional, Academy Award-Nominated performance in the movie “A Woman Under The Influence” in 1974, directed by her husband John Cassavetes?

Providing a bookend effect are his skater boy (created from a photo by Brooklyn artist Carlito Brigante) from earlier this year and an old favorite, his stencil of singer Erikah Badu.

And to end this week’s selection we offer a bonus image of a Lister we found while window shopping in Manhattan. Think there were some masks by the artist inside too.

Strike The Streets

Il 20 novembre riparte una nuova stagione di “STRIKE THE STREET”, progetto nato nel 2008 da un’idea di Alt97, MRF e UNO all’interno del centro sociale Strike, spazio pubblico autogestito.
Il mondo della Street Art, per quanto variegato e distinto al suo interno, ha una caratteristica che lo distingue da altri tipi di arte: come forma di espressione nata nella metropoli, è difficile, se non impossibile, esportarla in un contesto diverso dalla strada e dall’ambiente urbano, senza corromperne l’essenza stessa. Graffiti, stencils, posters, stickers, installazioni e qualsiasi altra cosa abbia a che fare con l’arte urbana sono i suoi “segni” e il tentativo di portare tutto questo mondo in gallerie, o luoghi dell’arte istituzionale, finisce con svuotarla di significato e capacità d’impatto.

Proprio dall’idea di dare visibilità a questa forma d’arte, rimanendo al di fuori del mercato, nasce “STRIKE THE STREET”: condividere, valorizzare e promuovere la street art riportandola nel suo contesto naturale, attraverso la pratica delle esposizioni gratuite in uno spazio (il pub dello strike) aperto e vivo nella sua quotidianità, e al tempo stesso, scenario urbano e naturale.

Lo Strike, infatti, è un capannone industriale nel quartiere di Casalbertone immerso tra i lavori della tav e la tangenziale est, strappato all’abbandono 8 anni fa, con l’intento, fra gli altri, di ridare visibilità alla cultura e all’arte, senza per questo diventare un luogo di mercificazione della stessa, o un’asettica galleria.
Un binomio perfetto per non “denaturalizzare” la street art da quello che è il suo habitat.
Il 20 Novembre riapre la terza stagione di Strike The Street, nel suo consueto spazio espositivo.
Si parte dal pomeriggio con dei live paintings che riguarderanno gli spazi interni ed esterni dello Strike e a cui parteciperanno vari tra gli artisti italiani e stranieri che faranno parte, dopo le ore 19, alla mostra collettiva di apertura del 2010, il tutto accompagnato dal dj set dei Junglabeat.

Dopo la cena, la serata si aprirà con il concerto live di “THE SOUL STREET BROTHERS”, gruppo funk, jazz, soul romano (www.myspace.com/soulstreetbrothers), e a seguire ci sarà il djset “THE BUMP”, il nuovo progetto di dj slump (Soulfood) & Viktor Uolf (Soul Kitchen), con Original Boogie & funk’70, che spazierà dalle colonne sonore alle gemme breakdance, tutto rigorosamente su vinile.

Judith Supine: Autumn In New York

Ahhhhhhh, FALL

Brooklyn based Street Artist Judith Supine remained perfectly chilled in A/C comfort during our hot-as-hell summer sojourn in New York City and never hit the streets as far as we can tell. But the leaves in the park have turned red and yellow and orange and Judith must have been inspired by the colors flying through the gritty air, swirling in with plastic bags and flyers for winter tires. Of course, even those natural shades are too bland and dull for Supine.

The acid hued street surrealist is back and we have solid evidence here. These collages all fluttered in and smacked up like radioactive leaves against the wall this week. Somehow the reappearance of their disjointed magic realism is as reassuring as the change of the seasons in dirty old Brooklyn.
