Upcoming: Dan Bergeron – Faces of the City

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome Dan Bergeron (also known as fauxreel) to his first solo exhibition with the gallery. Bergeron is best known for his subversive and thought-provoking public street installations.

His most recent body of work, Faces of the City, juxtaposes the abrasive charm of the distressed surfaces of modern cities with the intimate familiarity of the human face. As the walls and surfaces of the city define its physical character and spatial identity, the faces of its inhabitants provide the city with its personality, disposition and magnetism. His fusion of the two explores the idea that beauty truly lies in the scars, wrinkles and blemishes of places we live and people we meet.

Faces of the City will feature original photo-based, mixed media assemblages as well as a selection of editioned photo prints featuring the artist’s street installations.

Bergeron’s work has been displayed in institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. His public installations can be found in alleys, boroughs, arrondissements, and on high streets in Toronto, New York, Paris and London.

SUBEN PRESENTS

DIBUJAR MATA VIOLENTE
Bom-k . Dran . Sowat

Opening Thursday September 9th from 7.30 till 10 pm
RAS Gallery Barcelona . Carrer Doctor Dou 10

Like everything else that’s good in life, Graffiti kills. It’s the gas in the spray cans, the chemicals in the inks, the sleepless nights spent obsessing about new ideas and days wasted wandering the train tracks…

Working together for the first time in a Catalonian gallery, French graffiti writers Bomk, Dran and Sowat of the Da Mental Vaporz crew, are willing to share their last will with Europe’s Street Art Mecca. Hopefully, the show will be filled with their usual hyper realistic sexual beasts, disillusioned children’s’ drawings, vandalized sketches, dripping calligraphies, crossed out black and white pictures and whatever else they may have in store for us.

Mighty Tanaka Presents: A Group Show. Matt Siren, Royce Bannon, Veng & Chris from RWK, 2Esae & SKI From URNewyork and Peat Wollaeger (stenSoul) “Iconography, A Reflection of Anonymity”

Mighty Tanaka Presents:

Mighty Tanaka presents:
Iconography, A Reflection of Anonymity
Featuring the work of Matt Siren, Peat Wollaeger (stenSOUL), Royce Bannon, Chris & Veng of Robots Will Kill and 2Esae & SKI of URnewyork

New York City is rich with colors, sounds, textures, personal exchanges and human interactions, a scene constantly in motion. Through the busy veil of urban lifestyles is an artistic detail that binds the city together. Mighty Tanaka is excited to present: Iconography, A Reflection of Anonymity. Featuring the artwork of Matt Siren, Peat Wollaeger (stenSOUL), Royce Bannon, Chris and Veng of Robots Will Kill and 2Esae and SKI of URnewyork, they represent an accurate cross section of the street art one finds in NYC and beyond.

Each artist demonstrates their own personal blend of techniques and styles as they have developed a highly personalized means of branding their work, and ultimately, themselves. The icons they choose to place on the streets hold an individualized significance, a means of projecting self onto a surface interpreted by the general public. Their work represents a generation’s visionary artistic approach to the urban landscape.

Through a variety of methods including wheat paste, screen print, spray paint, stencils and more, their chosen techniques encompass a broad spectrum of what one encounters on the streets today. However, it is the integrity of the iconic imagery that translates the rawness of the streets into the refinement of the gallery setting.

OPENING RECEPTION:

The Black Rat Press Presents: Matt Small Exhibition “That I May See” (London)

Black Rat projects is pleased to announce that Thursday 9th September sees the opening of Matt Small’s latest exhibition ‘That I May See’.  The title refers to the motto of the Robert Shitima School in Zambia. Back in March Black Rat were lucky to have the opportunity to travel with Matt Small and Swoon to Lusaka where they spent a week giving art workshops to young people from the Robert Shitima School. It was an amazing experience and Matt has produced a beautiful new body of work based on his experience there. The show consists of portraits of the children from the school and 40% of the proceeds from the sale of works will be sent back to support the great work being done at the school.

The Robert Shitima school is a school for street children and aids orphans which feeds, clothes, educates and provides a place to live for 250 children. We are delighted to be able to host this show and the works are some of the most beautiful paintings of Matt’s we have ever seen.  ‘That I May See’ runs for 3 weeks and we hope to see you at the preview evening. Invites will be sent out via email later this week.

Black rat Projects will be exhibiting at two art fairs this October, Moniker Art Fair in Shoreditch and Multiplied at Christies in South Kensington.  Details can be found at www.monikerartfair.com and www.multipliedartfair.com .  Further details will follow closer to the time.

Best wishes BRP

Verve Hair Lounge Presents: Indigo Blue Solo Show “Towards The Light” (North Vancouver Canada)

Indigo Blue

You found your wings, lift slow through charcoal skies.  Weighted, I remain.
Seven years later, I move forward, choose light.  Paint pictures not of you but for you – and even now I cannot find the words to write.  Still just a heartbeat, still just a breath away, goodbye seems too strong a word for an absence only as complete as I choose to believe.  Seven years later, I know that you would want to see me smile.

Verve Hair Lounge and Art Gallery is very excited to be showcasing the talent of urban artist Indigo in her first solo show, Towards the Light.  This talented young artist has seen much acclaim in the past year, having showcased her talent internationally in cities such as Toronto, San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and of course her home base of Vancouver.

Known for her intricately cut and softly shaded stencils, Indigo has contributed to many beautiful and heartwarming murals at home and around the world.  Recent projects in Vancouver include the Paint Your Faith mural at Abbott and Hastings, the new Beatty Street Mural, Larger than Life at Ayden Gallery and a collaborative project at W2 Storeyum titled All Your Walls, her first foray into freehand work with spray paint.  Her hand-drawn method of stencil design has clearly developed this young artist’s eye and has made her recent evolution into other mediums seamless and strong.

Towards the Light consists of a series of oil paintings, drawings and prints that explore the experience of loss, grief, and regained hope.  It is a tribute to Jennifer Lynn Buhler, Indigo’s best friend throughout her youth, who passed away in a car crash in 2003.  All source images used in this exhibition were created in collaboration with photographer Miles de Courcy, with hair by Verve’s Amber George and makeup by Marlayna Pincott.

Poster Boy: “The War Of Art” Book Launch. NYC. Miami. Culver City.London

Poster Boy. "The War Of Art"
Poster Boy. “The War Of Art”

As you may know the Poster Boy book,  The War of Art, came out this year. The release of this book has given a few of us the opportunity do something much more significant. At The War of Art book launch on Saturday, Aug. 28th, we will officially kick off a legal defense fund for artists.

Kids Are Rallying Against The Empire (K.A.R.A.T.E.) is a grass roots effort we hope to eventually turn into a non-profit organization. Sadly, when dealing with the legal system most artists don’t know, understand, or are intimidated into forgoing their rights. Artists are often poorly represented in court and do not have financial access to proper counsel. K.A.R.A.T.E. is committed to helping artists defend themselves in court for art-related crimes conceived in public space.

Even at its infancy K.A.R.A.T.E. has managed to get Henry Matyjewicz, a Poster Boy participant, out of prison on appeal only two weeks after being sentenced to 11months by a superior court in New York. Mr. Matyjewicz is now being represented by world class civil rights lawyer, Ron Kuby. Because of K.A.R.A.T.E. Mr. Matyjewicz now stands a fighting chance in court.

I’m officially inviting you to The War of Art book release party. Whether you come to support Poster Boy or K.A.R.A.T.E. I’m hoping to see you there. Personally, I think supporting a legal defense fund is an obligation for those who say they’re supporters of graf and street art, besides the fact that it’s long overdue.

See you there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26296445@N05/4910264171/

Email us at karatemeat@gmail.com if you’d like to know more about the fund.

Signed copies of the book along with special edition prints are available through nycposterboy@gmail.com. A portion of the sales will go to the K.A.R.A.T.E fund.

Peace,

Poster Boy

Lazarides Gallery Presents: Bäst “Botulism” (London. Rathbone Place)

Bast: “Botulism”

Lazarides is delighted to announce Botulism, the first solo exhibition of Brooklyn’s infamous collagist Bäst at the Rathbone Gallery. Bäst will present a collection of new works, developing past preoccupations in an exciting new direction.

Bäst’s work is inspired by the early punk flyers of London and New York, playing with a variety of 21st Century icons and appropriating imagery from a variety of media. From advertising to comic book characters, Bäst subverts the familiar and recognisable into distorted counterparts. His collages, wheat-pasted posters and paintings morph Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio and Papa Smurf into multi-eyed sexually charged portraits of their former selves. Food packaging, 50’s newspaper clippings and brand logo’s all feature as the backdrop to his vibrant, brilliantly coloured works.

Whether appearing in the doorways of downtown New York or on the walls of a gallery, Bäst’s graphic language translates into prints, paintings, collages and mixed media sculptures. His latest acrylic paintings on wood have developed the colourful repetitive patterns so often present in his collages. For Botulism expect myriad unprecedented works with that classic Bäst flavour.

Bäst recently exhibited with longtime collaborators Faile in the Greek Street gallery space, the acclaimed Deluxx Fluxx Arcade showcasing a groundbreaking display of customised arcade games pasted with a collage of the artists’ unique imagery and paired with tunes composed by post-punk art rock band Les Savy Fav.

Lazarides Rathbone is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am – 7pm. pm. Admission is free. For more information visit www.lazinc.com

Bäst

Bäst has been an intricate part of the street art scene for the past 10 years throughout New York and Europe gaining cult status and recognition from fellow street artists. Hailing from Brooklyn, Bäst is an elusive character whose work centralizes around the art of collage.

Little is known of his work outside of what the public sees throughout New York’s urban environment but since 2003 his work has evolved and been exhibited in various exhibitions: Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade at Lazarides, London (2010), Graffiti at Galerie du Jour – Agnes B, Paris (2009), Beach Blanket Bingo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, New York (2009), This is China at BLVD Gallery, Seattle (2008), Ridiculousnessofitallshow at New Image Art, Los Angeles (2005) and Fancy Faile and Bast at Galerie Neurotitan, Berlin (2003).

Apart from showing in Japan, LA, Colorado, New York, London, Paris and Berlin, he’s also released a limited edition book, Revolucion De Papel, the only publication to bring his many works on the streets of New York together.
