With Keith Schwietzer and us helping Crest out here and there, and of course with Franklin doing lawn roomba duties, it is a bit of a community event. All it is missing is you! Sneak Peek of Hardware Inspired Crest Fest, Opening Today

No you haven’t.

Seen this before.

Joe Franquinha is creating an operetta of hardware-inspired art by 150 artists in his store before your eyes, and even the jaded cannot claim to have experience such a rich, relevant and comedic art show. “Joe, did you see the cat in the middle of the plants?” his mom asks about a sculpture during the last rush of installations that has run late into the wee hours every night this week.

In a Wiliamsburg hardware store opened by Joe’s dad and his uncle in 1962, even the curating of a 200-piece art show is a family affair. A light opera of jazz and syncopated rhythms and even burlesque, as you roll through the aisles the mostly local art sings arias and raps rhymes of the working people from every hook and particle board, dangled from the ceiling, and, in the case of Street Artist Olek, crocheted entirely around a shopping cart and hand truck.

For a decade Manny and his young son Joe, now in his late twenties, have thrown open the doors of the store to invite the artistic newcomers in this neighborhood to bring their creativity inside. What may be seen as a sly marketing maneuver to court a changing demographic actually morphed into a celebration of community, and comedy, with little tragedy. Cast on this leveling stage, Joe’s own passion for the arts enables a rare harmonic volley, where new talents never shown in a gallery before are hanging in the same aisle as more established performers with a global audience. As a participant in this real time interactive play, it’s up to you to discover them among the flat latex paint and gardening gloves.

BSA gives our thanks to Joe as a partner in provoking and invoking the creative spirit, and with this little sneak preview, encourages you to hop on the L train to Lorimer today and check it out. Follow the sound of bands and DJs and the smell of food vendors and walk past Jon Burgerman doodling all over a car on the sidewalk and you’ll be at the front door of Brooklyn’s own curious ode to hardware.

XAM : “Your Ad Here” Tiny Billboards

A funny thing happened on the way to Public Space.

Street Artist XAM has started a new series of miniature billboards that poke their little fingers in the eye of advertising and in the process call into question what kind of messages are legal or illegal. After the Public Ad Campaign last year successfully drew attention to the thousands of outdoor spaces in New York City that were illegally being used for advertising and poster glut was cut, the public became a little more aware of the street fight for their eyeballs.

Not sure what XAM means to say here, but they’re clever installations that can cause a cringe and a chuckle at the same time. These petite Out Of Home (OOH) message platters first seen in LA last week mounted on the back of street signs appear to be faithful reproductions of their gigantic cousins, and ironically the same size as that glowing rectangle you have in your purse or pocket right now.

The streets are coming alive with sculpture-like objects this spring – repurposed household items and brand new houses for the avian set are suddenly popping up like yellow and purple crocuses on the toxic banks of the Gowanus Canal. Also you’ll notice a bit more nudity these days, some frankly frank, as spring and a young man’s/woman’s fancy are abloom.

Birdwatching in Central Park is one of the most popular naturalist activities, and Street Art watching is a favorite naturalist activity of cultural soothsayers here at BSA. You never know what kind of plummage or pattern you are going to see as you round the corner of an abandoned lot or rusted doorway. As the geological, political, and economic seasons shift, different birds can be seen in the urban brush – reappearing familiar ones, and new previously unseen. Like an avid birdwatcher, sometimes you can find the name in your guidebook, other times you just note the markings and hope for future clues.

Here is our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Arms, Jaque Fragua, Marisak, a new kind of Obey, Shin Shin, XAM, and Yatika.

Our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuring XAM, El Sol 25, NohJColey, ROA, Bunny M, Cruz, and ROBOTS.

Last summer we began noticing unusual bird houses installed in elevated locations around Brooklyn by Street Artist XAM. Fashionable high-tech real estate options for our fine feathered friends, the smart shelters are not just another pretty space. Each aviary domicile is designed, constructed, and installed free of charge – although rumor has it that a broker from Corcoran has tried to rent out one as “a cozy sun drenched studio with river views”.

XAM employs their Constructive Street Design process to this high-strung hangout in Manhattan and calls it CSD Dwelling Unit 3.0. It is equipped with a solar panel, a rechargeable battery and a LED porch light that lights up at night to attract insects. Additionally it has a food storage area, passive ventilation, slopes to aid in drainage, and a “green roof” system with angles that cut down on wind resistance and create more stability for the home.

The block party in Bushwick provided by Factory Fresh Gallery and the app called All City turned out a number of new Brooklyn Street Art pieces on a block long installation, complete with friends, fans, and a taco stand. Included in the offering was this surprise collab with Faile and Bast, auspiciously appearing the morning of the event like a pre-Christmas gift wrapped in razor wire. The news of the piece travelled fast and while Ad Deville couldn’t find his red carpet, he did post a velvet rope to hold back the crowd. That didn’t stop Futura from climbing on top of his car to get the perfect shot.

And here we move to a British invasion of sorts with Geishas and Primates from Hush and K-Guy respectively. XAM has been installing some pretty cool looking bird houses around town equipped with LED lights on their porches that illuminate when the sun sets. Infinity and VUDU’s pieces for the Showpaper box project adds to the conversation on the street with a beaming signal tower atop the box.

K-Guy’s recent “Primates” piece, including this one that appears to be pretty fresh, have been appearing around Brooklyn suddenly. Apparently its meaning is reference to the growing perception of hypocrisy in the Catholic church, particularly as pertains to pedophilia coverups, its position on contraception, gay rights, among other issues.

And finally the 800 pound pink gorilla in the group, Samson from Albany, began his audacious cityscape project directly beside his hero/shero Sten & Lex. The neighbor next door liked it so much Samson will be back to continue the piece – which is part of a much grander scale piece on urban decay, development, and renewal that he hopes to stage in the future.
