-The TSUS* Team

CARTWHEEL and The Navarro Residence are proud to present The Exchange Project, a unique one night exhibition of New York art on LA soil. This interesting collaboration between the newly launched CARTWHEEL and the quickly rising Navarro Residence is set to be the first of a several yearly art and artist “exchanges” cultivated by the duo. Series 1 of this inaugural project features the work of three New York artists never before exhibited on the West Coast, Patrick Porter, RADICAL! and Scott Michael Ackerman.

Albany based watercolor artist, Patrick Porter, also a writer and a musician, began painting simply as a way to earn extra cash. Since launching his fine art career in 2007, his work quickly garnered attention within the New York art scene and soon led to international recognition and commissions as well as an extensive biography of work. Porter considers painting his purest and most enjoyable pursuit.

GREGORY SIFF  | THERE & BACK

March 1, 2012

6:00 – 11:00pm

Siren Studios 6063 W. Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA

RSVP must be made at rsvp@sirenstudios.com

On Thursday March 1, 2012, Siren Studios’ artist series platform; Rooftop Sessions will present Gregory Siff | There & Back. Having just come down from his first, and highly successful solo show with The Site Unscene, Gregory is back with a new body of work. In There & Back, Gregory reveals the private moments of his journey through the past two decades, exposing his range of emotions as well as those who had an impact on him along the way. Gregory’s unique technique and application of ink stains, spray, marker tags, knife etchings and poetry, visually express the maps of his reality; drawing from experience, conquest, loss and love. There & Back follows Gregory’s struggle of coping with the fracturing of a dream and the transformation to something greater once that fracture heals.

Most recently collaborating with street legend and artist Risk from The 7th Letter. Gregory has been commissioned by The Standard Hotel and The De la Barracuda Wall; has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, London, Dublin, Italy and Vancouver; and has appeared at MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch’s Art Parade, in Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, Paper Mag, LA Canvas, Complex and Glamour. An exclusive Twelve Bar tee shirt, designed by Gregory, will be available the night of the show.

For There & Back, Gregory will also be collaborating on an installation with students from Communities in Schools, a non-profit organization that works within the public school system to determine student’s needs and establishes relationships with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and parent and volunteer organizations to provide needed resources. Gregory is a dedicated supporter of planting success in children through the arts and will donate 10% of all proceeds from There & Back to Communities in Schools.

Siren Studios is located at 6063 W. Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. For Gregory Siff’s There & Back, Siren Studios’ Rooftop Session has teamed up with curatorial director Eli Consilvio of The Art Reserve as well as curators JB Jones and Wil Atkinson from The Site Unscene. Siren Studios created Rooftop Sessions, a periodic artist platform that extends their current contribution and support to the art scene in Los Angeles

Physical Goods Gallery and The Site Unscene Present: A HISTORY OF QUEER STREET ART (Hollywood, CA)

A History of Queer Street Art

A HISTORY OF QUEER STREET ART opens for a limited engagement in Los
Angeles with an opening reception on February 9th from 7-11pm.

Location: Physical Goods Gallery – 1621 1/2 Cahuenga Blvd. – Hollywood, CA 90028

A History of Queer Street Art opens for its month long engagement at Physical Goods
Gallery in the heart of Hollywood, CA on February 9th and will run through February 29th 2012. Originally curated and exhibited in San Francisco by SF based street artist Jeremy Novy, the exhibit is re-imagined and brought to Los Angeles by LA’s own Homo Riot.
A History of Queer Street Art, first presented in 2011 at the SOMArts Center in San Francisco, documents the work of queer and pro-queer street artists from around the world. Spanning more than two decades of work, the collection includes pieces by notable queer street artists as well as showcasing present day street activists.
At the heart of the History of Queer Street Art is a timeline of works collected by Novy which incorporates prints, stencils, stickers, photos, street pasters and even the gallery’s walls — creating a “street art experience” from a queer perspective. The Los Angeles version of the exhibition, produced by Homo Riot, will also feature new works by well-known European street artists like Paul Le Chien, Adrian & Shane, as well as American mainstays like Prvtdncr and Jilly Ballistic, and many other young and emerging queer street artists. Homo Riot has curated video presentations as well as art installations throughout the Hollywood gallery to further enhance the experience.

“It was important for me to bring this show to Los Angeles. Not only is LA one of the most
influential cities in the world when it comes to street art but historically, the city has been the site of many central movements in the struggle for LGBTQ equality. I hope this show will be seen as an important milestone in the queer artistic history of LA.”…Homo Riot

“It’s important to celebrate our history and to know the outstanding LGBT artists past and
present who are bold enough to express themselves in public. I hope this show inspires future artists to create art for the world to see,” Brian Meiler of Physical Goods Gallery.

“On the River…”, Robyn Hasty AKA Imminent Disaster Open Today

Her first New York solo show “On The River…” is actually the joining of two strong and handsome rivers into one. Her Street Art work finds a sister in this new wet-plate photograph collection at the cozy Kesting/Ray Gallery in Manhattan.

SuperTwins Skewville in San Francisco Employing “Playground Tactics”

The Queens natives and New York wiseguys are re-wiring an entire band from their imagined musical teen heartthrob youth – the one where Droo was adding more gel to his perfect hair and punishing his Fender onstage and Ad was getting high in the mop closet. White Walls in San Francisco takes the risk of letting the Street Art duo put on a show this time, and you can expect more “Playground Tactics” Saturday.

“Hybrid Thinking” at Jonathan Levine Saturday

“There’s a growing creative movement that we’ve dubbed Hybridism: a blend of both street art and fine art – a hybrid – as the raw meets the refined,” as the 2009 group show at Brooklyn’s Mighty Tanaka observed while giving evidence of what was happening on the streets and in galleries in the Brooklyn show “Hybridism”. Of course, Daniel Feral’s diagram points to 2008 as the beginning of “Hybridism”.

Similarly a year ago at Hold-Up Gallery in LA there was the “Hi-Graff” show that excitingly merged many Graff and Street Art movements as we observed at the time, “Those Cold War years are being chopped away brick by brick like the Berlin Wall 20 years ago, and a new language borrowing vocabulary from graffiti, street art, fine art, advertising, and pop/punk/hiphop/skater/cholo/tattoo culture continues to emerge in ways we never thought of before.”

Now in 2012 Manhattan’s Wooster Collective continues the conversation to reveal “Hybrid Thinking”, their collection of an international roster (South Africa, Germany, Spain, Amsterdam, Beijing) of names that have been successful in the galleries and streets, illustrating what you have been seeing alive and expanding for the last decade. In the curators’ words: “Hybrid Thinking refers to the current zeitgeist of our time: disparate cultures coming together to create something completely new.”

This roster includes Dal, Herakut, Hyuro, Roa, Sit and Vinz.

Fun Friday 11.11.11

I think I missed the morning rush today because I hit the street earlier than usual… and got a seat on the subway (!) because I woke up at 5 a.m. thinking about Papandreou, Berlusconi, Merkel, Obama, and the 3 ring circus shaping up as the 2012 election. The great thing about worldwide impending calamity is, political hypocrisy and economic depression makes artists dig deeper for ways to portray both. That’s why we’re starting today’s Fun Friday with hi-larious satire by the number 16 puncher of all time, Mike Tyson. Always look at the sunny side peepul!

1. CAIN! Mike Tyson for Herman Cain 2012
2. K-Guy’s solo show “Iconic Irrigation”

Poster Boy in Brooklyn at Might Tanaka Saturday

There is only one, or maybe there are many, Poster Boy/s. The subterranean subway poster slicing hasn’t been so apparent for a minute, but maybe it’s because PB has been slicing at the old kitchen table in preparation for a proper show. “Not for Prophet” is the title, summoning up the Pharisees, the tax man, and the folks down on Wall Street. Let’s see who and what gets cut.

Check out the Flaming Cacti in Astor Place (NYC)

A bunch of light posts around the periphery of Astor Place have been tied with eye popping colors as part of a project by Animus Art. “Cable ties (or “zip ties”) are linked together in order to go around the circumference of the lampposts.  This done thousands of times creates a brightly colored lamppost with thousands of little “hairs” (the ends of the cable ties), just like a cactus.”

Mind Control: Opening Reception

8:30 – Midnight, Friday, August 5th, 2011

Peep Show Gallery

1621 N. Cahuenga Blvd.

Los Angeles, CA 90028

MIND CONTROL GALLERY SHOW OPENS ON AUGUST 5TH FEATURING STREET ARTISTS AND FINE ARTISTS FROM LA TO SAN FRANCISCO.

Los Angeles, California, July 12th, 2011 – On August 5th, The Site Unscene in conjunction with Physical Goods are proud to present MIND CONTROL featuring artists Eddie Colla, Bughouse, Destroy All Design, DD$ and Insurgency Inc.

MIND CONTROL is a curated study upon the topic of mind control as expressed via the imaginations of some of Los Angeles and San Francisco’s most well known street & fine artists. The curated show allows each artist to interpret the concept of “mind control” in a way personal to them and their work. The influence of the advertising, media, peers and society as a whole has a hold on each of our mind’s that is not only hard to ignore, but often times hard to even recognize. MIND CONTROL aims to shed light onto the constant bombardment of our minds by these outside influences, in a hope to support the idea of thinking for oneself. The opening night event will be the first in a month long series of events.

The artists exhibiting in MIND CONTROL inlcude: San Francisco based street artist Eddie Colla, Los Angeles design studio Bughouse, LA street artist Destroy All Design, LA street/fine art trio DD$, and Los Angeles based lifestyle collective Insurgency Inc.

Eddie Colla: There is a visual conversation that takes place on the streets of urban environments. This conversation is dominated primarily by advertising and utilitarian signage and assumes passive participation. Whether invited or not I am going to participate in this conversation. Public spaces were never intended to be coated from top to bottom with photos of consumer products. These spaces should, in some manner, reflect the culture that thrives in that space.

Bughouse: BUGHOUSE, an art and design studio based out of Los Angeles, is creative duo Rebecca Johnson & Jeff Klarin. Bughouse creates original artwork and handmade furniture that is dark-humored and inspired by vintage ephemera, pharmaceuticals and music paraphernalia.

Rebecca Johnson, one half of Bughouse was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her medium is chosen by what is most appropriate for the subject and mood, ranging from painting to mixed media to photography. Her subject matter often has a dark comedic sensibility. Jeff Klarin lives and works in Los Angeles as part of Bughouse. Exploring and pushing the boundaries of conventional fabrication and visual representation is what drives his creations. Many of his mixed-media pieces utilize photography, painting, illustration and transfer techniques that create organic ‘accidents’ that unexpectedly alter and transform the creative process.

Destroy All Design: Destroy All Design’s philosophy is just that, destroy everything you know in order to realize what true design is. The joystick image, iconic to Destroy’s work, is a symbol of simplified design, represents a time when design was simple, and serves as a symbol for his visual manifesto. With a background in graffiti, it is the unique mix of writing skill combined with an expert design eye that makes his street work so recognizable and appealing.

DD$: DD$, aka The Double D’s, is another incarnation of famed street crew Cyrcle. DD$ is a three man collective, each artist comes from different backgrounds of the artistic spectrum- graffiti, fine art, and design. They utilize negative and oppressive imagery to create hope and inspiration. DD$ strives to shed light on otherwise dark matters, playfully exposing the gray areas of life.

INSURGENCY INC: INSURGENCY INC’s mission is to ‘force one into self-evaluation and thereby into self-motivation.’ The collective, made up of artists, writers, photographers and revolutionaries, creates art that involves the use of everyday imagery with out of context ‘lifestyle’ copy to re-appropriate the imagery in a means to evoke emotional responses, while their blog and lifestyle installations at events throughout LA intend to achieve the same within their audience’s lives.

Mind Control is curated by The Site Unscene and is brought to you by Physical Goods. The Site Unscene is a new agency for a new kind of artist, which represents, aides and promotes the finest in LA street art and artists. Physical Goods is a multi-platform, artist collective, gallery/store currently based out of the Peep Show Gallery. Physical Goods, created by Brian Meiler is the future of art & retail, making great art available to the masses in unique ways.

The Site Unscene in conjunction with The Loft Salon & Gallery Present: “Fringe” (Los Angeles, CA)

Fringe

FRINGE” Street Art Show featuring SMEAR, LEBA and GREGORY SIFF opens June 9th

Los Angeles, California, 2 June 2011 – On June 9th,The Site Unscene in conjunction with The Loft Salon & Gallery brings you the first in a monthly series of art shows to open during the Downtown LA Artwalk. The series will kick-off with street art show FRINGE featuring the work of Smear, Leba and Gregory Siff.

Show opens June 9th, 2011,  6pm – 10pm at The Loft Salon, 560 S. Main Street #8W, LA 90013. The event is free all night, lots of drinks, great music and amazing art.

Smear, Leba and Gregory Siff are three of the most notable street artists in Los Angeles. Each will all be presenting street influenced artwork on June 9th at the opening of FRINGE. Not allowing themselves to be marginalized by accepted norms or considered secondary to any art movement, these three artists all bring a unique voice and style to the public eye.  Never letting fear of adversity, or conformity, influence their artistic visions, these artists persist through their work for FRINGE, a curated collection playing on the concept of ‘marginalized’ society in it’s various forms.

Smear: Cristian Gheorghiu’s (aka SMEAR) visceral, highly personal style of painting emulates the messy workings of the total-information age, layering forms and images with powerful, slashing brush strokes of rhythmic, unifying mixtures and improvised, frenzied lines coupled with brilliant color to achieve a simplified language. Gheorghiu counters his free, muscular brushstrokes by loading his paintings with rags and tatters of cloth, reproductions, fragments of comic strips, and other collage elements of waste and discarded materials to convey maps of mental states. More info on Smear here.

Leba: The artist Leba has been active in the street art scene, from the West to East coast, since the beginning of last decade. He is recognized and admired for combining biting social commentary and fine art imagery into both his street art and fine art.  HE is unafraid to speak his mind with a spray can as on his highly controversial, yet loved, Census billboards and much lauded American Apparel advert takeovers.  His street art is always relevant, exploratory, skillfully crafted, and many times, politically charged. He is skilled in many mediums: sculpting, wheat pasting, stencil cutting, painting and he skillfully conforms each medium to the needs of each individual piece. It is this combination of intelligence and raw talent that has made him one of the most admired and intriguing LA artists around the globe. More info on Leba here.

Gregory Siff: is an American Pop, Street, Abstract-expressionist. He has exhibited un New York City, Los Angeles, London, Itialy, Dublin and Vancouver. His paintings have been featured in Deitch Projects Art Parades, The Standard Hotel, De La Barracuda Wall and Urban Outfitters. Gregory’s work has appeared in Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, Paper Mag, L.A. Times, Marc Ecko’s Complex, Cool Hunting and Glamour. You can also find his art on the street and HERE.

FRINGE  is presented by The Loft Hair Salon & Gallery located in the heart of downtown LA eight stories up. The 1500+ square foot space offers the perfect view of downtown life while showcasing the best of LA art life indoors. More info here.
