Brooklyn-Street-Art-IMAGES-OF-THE-WEEK_05-2010Our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring; Clown Soldier, K-Guy, Kenny Scharf, Shin Shin, Skewville, TipToe, and Wing

First NYC celebrated downtown artist, Street Artist, and Brooklyn resident Kenny Scharf. We have his first installed roll-down pieces in Chelsea that are part of his city wide project “The Street Gallery” with Anonymous Gallery and we have him in progress doing his large-scale mural on the Houston Street wall.

British Street Artist K-Guy was recently in NYC for a show at the new Chelsea spot Indica Gallery, which is named after the original Indica Gallery in Mason’s Yard, London.  His new piece for Amnesty International is called “Blood on your Hands”, pointedly incriminating the masters of industry who profit from child labor and other inhumanity.

Next it’s a brand new collaboration between Shin Shin and Wing. Both artists create a fantastic version of the natural world, insinuating themselves into Street Art milieus with still life compositions of  flowers and animals.

A Wellspring: New York City Walls That Overflow

For the Street Art aficionados and for those that observe the arts in general New York City offers a year-round wellspring of inspiration. In particular, there are a number of well-known walls that get plastered and sprayed and tagged upon continuously, ever changing and ever interesting.

When you think of individual creativity we think of the old saying “we all drink from the same well”. With the explosion of real estate construction all over the city in the past decade we are very fortunate indeed to have many such wells/walls for complex Street Art “collaborations”.  At any time there is new art on walls in diverse neighborhoods throughout the city like Soho, Chelsea, The Lower East Side, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Red Hook, Long Island City and the Bronx to mention a few.

Below are images from just one such wall; An ever-changing gallery in the neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan.

Our weekly interview with the street; this week featuring Andy Kessler Foundation, ASVP, Bishop203, Brummel, Clown Soldier, Imminent Disaster, JC2, JJ Veronis, Mr. DiMaggio, QRST, Shin Shin, Special Graffiti Unit, Zako, Zhe155

This summer has the floodgates open for all manner of oddities and agendas evident on the walls in NYC. While there is beauty and skill of varying degrees, more often you’ll also encounter themes better categorized as anxiety-ridden. Don’t look to our street artists to shield us from the rawness of messy life that is lurking under the cosmopolish of a world city. The conversations on the street continue to contemplate war and violence, render social and political critique, create memorials, offer blunt opinion and propose existential questions.  Conversations among street artists also continue before our eyes, making for progressive theater and on-the-fly “collaboration”.

We start off with something more along the lines of graff, framed by July’s succulent green.

New York is a Zoo! Street Art and the Animal Kingdom

This Spring New York City had a few wild coyotes running in Central Park looking for prey.

Unfortunately the only flesh that could be hunted was one of the Lehman Brothers hiding in a cave in the Brambles since the crash and a couple of lost social x-rays looking for the old Tavern on the Green. More plastic than meat.

In fact New York has it’s share of wildlife, and I don’t just mean the Annual Zombie Crawl or Amanda LaPore, or even Macy’s One Day Sale. Since the early 2000’s the D.I.Y. kids fascination with putting lifelike animals on every available surface has continued unabated, and street artists have similarly loosed plenty of birds, frogs, cats, snakes, rabbits, wolves, squirrels, bees and multiple other species onto our streets. The occurrence of lifelike and fictional animals has been frightening, adorable, educational, and enjoyable.

One theory for the reappearance of the natural world in such numbers on our street walls (yes, there are theories) is rooted in native people prophecies that the animals are spirits coming to reclaim what once was theirs. Looking at how humans are rapaciously mucking up the natural world, I don’t know why they haven’t started diving at our necks already.

So, perhaps all of these street art animals are here to remind us how vital it is for us to to re-connect with them and live in harmony with each other. For instance, I give the squirrels and pigeons of our city much credit for making it here; Tough, resilient, and cranky, they may be the original New Yorkers. I’ve learned so much from them. When a pigeon refuses to move from the spot on the sidewalk where she is waddling I smile and walk around. New York is hers as much as it is mine, dammit.

The images below, some previously published on BSA and some brand new, are a tribute to both the artists and their subjects.

Images of The Week 03.07.10 : New Poster Boys in a New Spring Crop

March is here but don’t put your woolens away laddies and lasses.

BSA predicts at least two more snow storms before you can work on the tan line. Because, you know, we are weathermen too.   Our weekly interview with the Streets

Spring is already in the air and on the streets with brand new shoots and stems popping through the tundra by some of the new crop from the last couple of minutes.

This week we clocked none less than Poster Boy, Shin Shin, Oopsy Daisy, Primo, and Tazmat on the frozen streets of this most loved city of ours. The Poster Boy pieces in particular are a brand new direction – more focused and concepted – but after a minute of study you know they’re his and they are just as wacky as ever. Maybe they’re related to the new book coming out this month .

Enjoy this weeks crop.
