Shepard Fairey in Paris (VIDEO)

“The way this mural came about is that I met C215 and he asked me if I would be coming to Paris and if so would I like to do a big wall,” says Shepard Fairey as he stands on a ledge overlooking Paris in this new video interview with Butterfly. As the Street Art world continues to evolve and transform into a number of directions, it’s good to check in with one of the first major names to rise from the modern movement.

Still from video interview with Shepard Fairey

Here in Paris he is more concentrated on the grand scale mural that garners thousands of eyes rather than the hand slapped sticker or quickly wheat-pasted poster. But as ever, he is enthusiastic about the basic tenets of Street art that first led him to get outside. “What I think is exciting is that there is a new wave of art affecting people. It’s not just the traditional (art) in the galleries.”

Galerie Itinerrance Presents: Jana & Js “Jeux de Constructions” (Paris, France)

Itinerrance Gallery
brooklyn-street-art-jana-js-itinerrance-gallery
Jana & Js
Solo show “Jeux de constructions”
February, 25 – March, 26
Opening on Friday, February, 25 from 6 pm
Deserted factories, parking lots being demolished, low rise apartment blocks : these elements – among many others – surround and inspire Jana & Js. Their work is nourished by the city they live in, together with its inhabitants and its ever changing architectural landscape. The paintings created by this couple of artists make use of extremely detailed and scrupulously prepared stencils..
Jana & Js raise the question of the individual in large groups of buildings and more widely in the cities, combining portraits and architectural views.
Their street paintings (in France, Austria, Russia, Slovakia, Romania and Spain) also led them to develop an interaction with the environment in which they operate and the public – passerby or spectator – using sets of mirrors as a game in order to create infinities of ways of seeing the city.
Jana & Js are young artists whose work began to take shape only in the mid-2000, and who are today among the most talented of their generation. After having lived and worked together in Paris, they are today between Austria and France.
Jeux de Constructions is the second exhibition in Itinerrance Gallery devoted to them. Combining their love for woodworking, rebuilding their own materials and images composition from their cuts, this exhibition will present for the first time a wide range of their work volume initiated a few months ago.

C215: Show Pics of “Community Service”

Stencil Street Artist Hits Both Floors of Parisian Gallery

Last minute touches at “Community Service”. (photo © Roswitha Guillemin courtesy the gallery)

Last Friday C215 played host at Galerie Itinerrance as he debuted many new pieces across various surfaces using the stencil technique he is known for. His addition of color variations over the last year or so has opened a door into more possibilities for dimension and emotion in his portraits. Fans of the monochromatic style he established his name with were pleased to see the black/grey/white stencils also continue to capture his interest.

C215 Prepares for “Community Service”: New Show and Book

“Painting in the streets puts limits on you, as far as the number of colours you can bring with you, how much time you have to paint, and even the subject matter since I like to put a link between the stencils I paint and the context around where I paint them.”

C215 speaks about his process, his travels, and his new book that features street images from our own Jaime Rojo and an introduction from our editor.  More from the interview with Ripo on No New Enemies.

Aakash has been riding that tape into the gallery – including this homage to Jeff Koons.  Says the gallery for the “Overlap” show that opened last night, “The common denominator of all works in the exhibition is the overlapping of isometric square shapes to create new forms that move towards figurative representation.”

Nick Walker “In Gods We Trust”

This new video from Nick Walker in an interview at the opening of his current show at Art Sensus Gallery contains two of the pieces he did first with us this summer on a some walls BSA secured for him in The People’s Republic of Brooklyn.  The pieces also look great in the gallery, but the time hanging out with this talented and down-to-earth Street Artist was stellar and a really nice memory for summer 2010.

“Yes on 19”

An earnest text-based approach to Street Art, this duo treats their work more like Public Service Announcement than Street Art.  The messages posted are in support of Proposition 19, a referendum to legalize use of marijuana this past Tuesday in California, which was voted against by 53.9% of the populace.

Interestingly, the first part of the video is a primer on how to make fresh wheat paste in your kitchen. Suddenly BSA is the cooking channel!

Saber, Shepard Fairey and American Pride

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Fairy-SABER-Flags_Photo-copyright_Todd_Mazer

From the West Coast, where smoking pot is still illegal without a doctor’s prescription, Shepard Fairey posted excellent photos by Todd Mazer of a big mural he and Saber recently completed for a project with a name that sounds kind of familiar.

“Saber and I have been friends for over 10 years and previously collaborated on the Brooklyn Projects wall on Sunset in Echo Park. We also both recently coincidentally made art inspired by the American flag,” says Fairey.

Galerie Itinerrance Presents: C215 Solo Show and Book Launch “Community Service” (Paris, FR.)

Galerie Itenerrance

C215
« Community Service »

Exhibition November, 12 to December, 25, 2010 at Galerie Itinerrance
Opening on Friday, November, 12 from 6 pm

brooklyn-street-art-c215-Galerie-Itenerrance-flyerA solo show:
C215 became in a short time an important phenomenon in street art. He is considered by his
peers as one of the most talented artists on the international scene. And his success goes
much further because he also collaborâtes with institutions such as the council of Vitry-sur-
Seine, his town, which supports him into his vision of the street. The stencils of C215, so
numerous in the streets of the world, of Vitry and Paris, are very trendy to a large audience.
Through a stunning technique, C215 realizes portraits and scenes with very intricated
stencils in a fine attention to the details. His extensive researches in the field of coulours
during this past year, brings now a new dimension to his work more and more powerful.

Today, this exhibition is an opportunity for C215 to return to the evolution of his
studio work and his reflections on the urban environment. These two dimensions
will be then highlighted on the two floors of the Gallery Itinerrance.

brooklyn-street-art-c215-Galerie-ItenerranceA book:

In October 2009, Critères Editions published a book in a little collection that became a real
success. After a few thousands of sold copies, they are prepared a more complete
monography in another collection named Urbanité.

The Community Service book gathers the testimonies of a dozen photographers in Europe
and the United States, as Romanywg (GBR), Luna Park (U.S.), Lois Stavsky (U.S.), Jaime Rojo (US) or Jessica
Stewart (IT).

A review : thousands of stencils painted on the walls of cities worldwide.

A tribute : in text and pictures, to the dedication and commitment of this street artist.

A thought:
Christian Guémy, also as doctor of art history, continues the discussion of Daniel Buren on
the link between the concept of public art and the in situ, with a new approach toward the
movement of street art, like the concept of placement or interaction with the environment.

He develops that further when  he doesn’t hide his face neither his name, during day and
oftenly without authoriszation.

“When you paint on trains, public buildings or blank walls, I understand the desire to protect his identity, but this
is not my situation […] I try to paint what is beautiful and accomplished, which can be understood and
appreciated by all. ”

« Industrial Jungle »

M-City (Gdansk, Poland – 1978)

M-City used to be a video game designer obsessed with sciences.
One day in the early 90s he has been caught by the street art.
He went to conquer the continents, with some stencils in his
pocket and a concept: the imagination is the only limit of
representation. By the way of pixel art, his work unfolds as
infinite landscapes, black and white, standing at the dawn of the
Industrial Revolution. With paintings ranging up to 85 meters
long, this young Polish man delights in gigantism. M-City’s
renown is now undeniable, both on the street that gallery. He is
proposing today to come and share his dream both wildly poetic
and mathematics for the first time in Paris.

Logan Hicks in Paris Spraying Stencils on the Street for Show

The Bearded Brooklyn Brotherman Readies His Solo Show at Galerie Itinerrance

Brooklyn-Street-Art-header-WEB-Logan-Hicks-itinerrance-June2010_long-road-header

Sunday afternoon stencil artist Logan Hicks had to “take it outside” – so often the case with artists who use cans to create.

The artist who employs the dissapearing
The artist who celebrates the vanishing point perspective is framed here by the streetscape of Paris.

His intricately cut stencils were there for any passerby to see as Logan set up shop on the street, carefully placing layer after layer, strategically sticking a bit of blue gaffers tape here and there to keep them in place, and wielding well-rendered plumes of colored aerosol above the templates to fill the empty shapes.

Logan Hicks (US, New York)

Opening June 10th, from 6pm
Supported by Malibu

Solo show June 10 – July 3

Logan Hicks lives in New York and works within the artistic pool of Brooklyn. His relationship to the city is passionate and his fascination has remained unchanged over time. That led him to keep photographing facades, streets, subway tunnels he reproduces through so hyperreal.istic stencils. He is a pioneer in this field, he has created without being emulated but never equaled.

Today, he develops a new very graphic direction. His new works are going towards the treatment of more pronounced lines, with a smoothness and clarity unrivaled in the world of stencil art, as if the tool did not count anymore.
With a career spanning more than ten years, Logan Hicks has emerged as one of the most important artist in the international street art scene.

Logan Hicks Print Release Coming Soon

After the posting about prints from earlier today, a little bird has told us to keep an eye out for a very cool and unusual Logan Hicks print release pretty soon, but it’s not official yet.

Hot off the presses...

Hot off the presses...

His current show at Opera Gallery in Soho has been open since last Wednesday and he is currently putting together a show for Paris next month at Galerie Itinerance.  Apparently the limited print run is going to be one of the pieces from this show that features his new technique of stencil-making that makes the pieces look like liquid.

From the picture above, it looks like it is of the same design as this pic from the show at Opera.
