When it comes to street art we’re in this new legal mural phase right now and when you head out to Bushwick Open Studios today you will see freshly painted and in-process walls. Don’t worry, we’re still seeing a lot of uncensored freewheeling self-selecting artistic installations of the unsanctioned variety – and that sector is alive and well. See you out in the street!

BSA FILM FRIDAY: 04.18.14

Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

A sort of quiet day for much of Latin America today as it is Good Friday and many observe it, also many are reflecting on the passing of writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez yesterday. Colombia has declared three days of national mourning for this literary giant; Truly he was a storyteller globally known and celebrated. His magical realism was filled with humor and metaphor, taking it just one step further.

Muralists and painters have relied upon this third eye to transcend the mere mundanity of daily existence as well, and we meditate today on the gifts of creativity that everyone can access to discover at least a little magic in life. Each one of these videos in some way make us think of Garcia Marquez and his legacy to us as a master storyteller.

In a country known for its love of magic realism, and the home of Gabriel Garcia Marquez for three decades, Vexta contemplates the cycle of life and death and life in Mexico City.

BSA Halloween Street Art Special 2013

The Halloween Parade through the Village in NYC is tonight, the 40th actually, and you will see a greater number of ghostly guys and ghouls on the bus and subway and hanging out on the street today. Of course New York has a fair share of freaks throughout the year, and some people love a dancing skeleton or screeching witch or marching Zombie almost anytime, really. When it comes to Street Art, you can always count on skulls and monsters and the occasional raven.

Last year Halloween in NYC was basically cancelled by the sincerely frightening Superstorm Sandy that left half of the city in darkness for days, and this year we hope it will be more about the fantasy aspect of All Hallows Eve.

We start off the BSA collection by photographer Jaime Rojo with this brand new one from Banksy’s Grim Reaper on Houston Street this weekend. Also, check out the video by Kadshah Nagibe of the last Halloween parade that NYC hosted. Have a great day and a haunted fun night everybody!

Images Of The Week: 09.01.13

September is the perfect time of the year for Street Art in NYC – and shout out to the NYTimes who ran a double spread and video this week with images of Street Art and graffiti you can see here every week – including the great MOMO piece in Dumbo that was commissioned by Two Trees, and walls from the Bushwick Collective, 5 Pointz, Welling Court, Hunts Point, Coney Island and more. Seeing the collection made us think about how much BSA really covers throughout New York and the world every month and that made us happy as Bill DiBlasio, the apparent next mayor of NYC.

Also it was cool this week to step back and see everybody at the “Wild Style” 30th Anniversary free show in the park by the East River – to see so many people including Lee Quinones, both Ahearn brothers, Cold Crush brothers, Lady Pink, Fab Five Freddy, Futura, Mare 139, Jane Dickson, Lisa Lee, Patti Astor, Joe Conzo, Martha Cooper, among others – and Busy B, who reminded us that the early days of hip-hop were about “peace, love, unity, and having fun”. Yeah, we’re on board for more of that.

Stay tuned this month for exclusive BSA coverage of Nuart ’13 in Stavanger, Urban Forms in Lodz, Faile at the Dallas Contemporary, a number of new gallery shows with the new crop of artists on display, and even a chance for BSA to meet you in Bushwick at a special event on the 19th, wink wink.

“The piece is made of reclaimed plastic bottles that were assembled in a large wire mesh,” says South African installation artist r1, who created this piece in a way that reminded us of the El Anatsui show this year at the Brooklyn Museum and on the Highline. “Community and street art seems to work well together,” r1 says when recalling the spontaneously posing kids who arrived to get in the picture.

BSA Film Friday: 07.26.13

About to debut in August and through the fall, the sequel to the global graffiti documentary Bomb It travels to a number of far-flung cities you are vaguely aware of, much less imagine as locations of a graffiti or Street Art scene. In fact, one of the strengths of this movie is the subtle and not-so-subtle imparting of the realities of daily life elsewhere that are revealed while in the course of tracking graffiti and Street Art. Yes, Street Art makes a much heavier impression in this tale than one might expect from a movie called Bomb It 2, but don’t let terminology blind you from seeing the people behind the paint.

Using a tiny camera that jumps to the beat of the always-gyrating soundtrack, Reiss takes you to the Palestinian refugee camps on the West Bank and you can feel the utterly constrictive hand around your neck while people nervously paint at night under guard. A short time later you learn the details of the brutal punishment called caning as it applies to graffiti writers in Singapore. Next you are in Thailand where painting on a wall almost feels like a spiritual practice. As much as graff writers like to generalize about the “rules” of graffiti in your city, the Bomb It movies tell you that they don’t apply universally.

Of course it doesn’t pretend to interview every single writer and Street Artist in every single city on the globe (as will be a critique no doubt), but that would require a movie that is 400 hours long. However you will witness the intensity of feelings that bombing/painting/pasting evokes in people and see the fierce devotion that some writers have, learn how it can be an art practice or an act of pure defiance, and hear at least one writer say unequivocally that graffiti saved his life.

With scenes from previously unexplored areas of the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia – Bomb it 2 represents a wide range of cultures, styles and beliefs and includes interviews with Klone, Know Hope, Great Bates, Twoone, Darbotz, Killer Gerbil and Zero, Bon, Alex Face, Sloke, Husk Mit Navn, Ash, Phibs, Stormie Mills, Beejoir, Zero Cents, Vexta, MIC, and Xeme, and many more.

SAMPA GRAFFITI / Ignoto

A new installment from a series that focuses on graffiti artists in São Paulo, here is a relaxed installation from Ignoto. The laidback style of his whole approach tells you he’s chilled and the action on the street is unusual because steps away from him are a handful of kids flying kites while he does his work. Click on the CC at the bottom to see a translation of Ignoto’s thoughts on graffiti and art in general.

Gilf! Malala Yousafzai. Malala was honored at the UN on Friday, which was renamed “Malala Day”, to draw attention to the importance of education for all children. This girl was shot in the head last October by the Taliban for being on a school bus and going to school. She has recovered miraculously and Friday in New York she turned 16. Welling Court 2013 Is a Blast, Was the Last

This was the last edition of Welling Court.

Or it will be if you don’t help.

Garrison and Alison Buxton have spent countless hours, elbow grease and their own money to make this huge non-commercial Welling Court Mural Project happen 4 years in a row – giving free walls to a few hundred artist during that time.

Cost to us: Zilch, Zero, Nada

Cultural workers extraordinaire with a Rolodex list as long as the banquet table at an Italian wedding, these two have given more Street Artists artists more free opportunities than a block full of GO-GO bars. Wait, that didn’t sound right. But you get our point.

If not, here’s the point: Go pledge 10 bucks or a hundred bucks to their fundraiser for all the fun and true community spirit they have brought people for the last four years.

And this means all the artists who have been helped too. Should we start naming names?

After you pledge some money to their Indiegogo come back here and enjoy brand new images of the 4th Annual Welling Court installation. It may be the last time. And then all we will have left are logo-smothered festivals sponsored by cool “urban” lifestyle brands, real estate agents, energy drinks, and/or the Chamber of Commerce and The Daughters of the Revolution. Jeez that’ll be fun, won’t it?

Roofing It in Brooklyn : A Summer Tradition on Top of the City

Your cousin Harvey is a “Roofing Technologist”, which he told you with spicy sausage and beer breath at the family BBQ on Memorial Day. He says it means that he has attained proficiency in roofing technology, including roof system types, roof system design and basic installation. Also, he periodically patches holes with black boiling tar.

As the sun begins to smite the bejesus out of your average Street Artist who is looking for spots in dirty old Brooklyn, you will also find that a number of the barbeque-ists of this species can become what we like to call “roof cosmetologists”. This means that they apply learned and impromptu methods of paintology to the plain or ugly sections of industrial grade roofs, veritably transforming their appearance aestheticallistically. Armed with lawn chairs, cans, and a 40 oz. (and possibly a grill if somebody wants to carry it), these Street Artists clammer up skinny metal ladders to play some tunes, get some sun, and have their version of a picnic in the park.

We’ve waxed about summertime roofs before when we published A Roof With a View : Looking at Art Up Above, so this is sort of your Roof Update: Summer 2013. It’s true, lately rooftop parties in Brooklyn have become as ubiquitous as Olive Gardens and Applebees in strip malls and the stimulating conversations there are probably just as likely. But you won’t need a cute outfit at this cookout. Wait, well, why not, as long as your coming, and grab some Slim Jims.

But for summer funnification nothing beats the swarthy sweaty delirium of being baked alive on a chrome coated roof with no shade in the brutal sun and humidity and wielding a pile of cans of eye popping colors across the bricks – with clouds of aerosol wafting by in a fine mist and sticking to your sunglasses. That’s the ticket, bro/sis.

Recently we found this smorgasbord of new stuff on some rooftops and aesthetically, stylistically, these new pieces are strutting a pared-down new simplified look. Instead of the sweeping extravagant pieces of traditional graffiti, with many handstyles and spray tricks competing for star position, many of these are one-off soliloquies or two person collabos with a story behind them. Not that we know what the stories are – guess it’s part of the “inside baseball” side of this scene to leave you guessing. All Female Power on the Bushwick Tip, Sis

We received a roaring response from BSA readers about yesterday’s post on Bushwick and the changing nature of the scene on the street and its relation to this artists neighborhood that feels like it is on the cusp of full-throttle gentrification. With all the factors implied for a maturing giant cultural moment years in the making, clearly for us dear old dirty Bushwack is soooo HOT. Also, the thermometer will be in the 90s this weekend so we were showing off some incredibly clever wordplay. We’ll pick up this conversation with you a little later, but thank you to all the thinkers and feelers and opinion makers who write to us. We love you too.

But today we want to put a little sunshine on a handful of the women who create work for the street, including this new stuff that popped up this week in Bushwick. The casual passerby doesn’t normally have a clue who has put work on the street or their gender and they either like it or don’t – the work has to stand on its own and its fate and duration is determined by a complex set of every changing rules and factors. But if you want a non-sexist review of your work, then do it anonymously- which the vast majority of Street Art is outside its immediate peer group.

This group of artists – Alice Mizrachi, Cake, Elle, Gilf!, Sheryo, and Vexta – is local, national and international, just like the rest of the scene, and was pulled together by Gilf! She took a few minutes to tell BSA readers about the motivation for this project and the experience. And there was one woman Street Artist who was present in Gilf!’s mind – can you guess who she is referring to?

“As a woman who was solely inspired to begin working in the streets by another female artist, I have felt the need to bring a group of women on one wall together for some time. While we tend to be few and far between in the chaos of the street art world I feel our messages can be empowering for women of all ages. When we show work all together in one place that power can be exponential.

I was really excited to see how each artist interpreted the concept of honoring women in her own unique voice. Our struggles and victories can sometimes be very different than men’s, and to create that discussion all together was truly a unique experience. I have to say I was impressed at how quickly and hard these ladies worked to create such great art. There is typically an aura of support and community that tends to be universal in our world of creating art for the public, and this wall had that in abundance” – Gilf!

Vexta in Kochi, India.

Australian born Brooklyn-based Street Artist Vexta was in Kochi for the first Biennale on 12/12/12 and in this new video she is learning about translating her work across cultures, opening a dialogue about gender roles, and adjusting to the reality of painting with an inquisitive audience always watching.

The short film by Rah Akaishi and Aaron Glasson with a soundtrack from Isnod sets itself apart by presenting a montage of images of life in Kochi for context, narrative insights from Vexta, and a light popping of music and camera cuts that keep it all engaging.

“Crimes of Minds” Music Video

Here is something unusual – a music video made to support a book of Street Artists. “Crimes of Minds” comes out in April and features the work of BEST EVER, BEN SLOW, GUY DENNING, MORTEN ANDERSEN, FINBARR DAC, SLY2, C215, ALICE PASQUINI, LILIWENN, JEF AÉROSOL, WEN2, ANTOINE STEVENS, DA MENTAL VAPORZ (BLO, BOM.K, BRUSK, DRAN, GRIS, JAW, KAN, SOWAT), PAKONE, KOOL KOOR, TSF CREW, CELESTE JAVA.

Spearheaded by artist Liliwenn, the two year project was produced by the Sugar Rush non-profit and turned the French port town of Brest into a street gallery and a jumping off point for artistic expression with 26 international artists, 11 photographers, 6 video artists, 10 musicians and a number of partners, including the town council.

The musical artist is Mattic based in France and the wall art is by UK duo Best Ever.

Lister “Unsung Heroes” (LNDN/New Castle)

Anthony Lister’s two shows at The Outsiders Gallery titled “Unslung Heroes” are taking place simultaneously at The Outsiders London and New Castle outlets at the same time. “I try to combine the highbrow and lowbrow,” says Lister, “creating analogies which allow the viewer to feel comfortable with subjects that maybe they’ve made snap judgements on before.”

At the Low Brow Artique Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn artists Rachel Hayes, Jilly Ballistic, Vahge, and Vexta explore the discipline of portraiture with their group exhibition “Rewriting Portraiture” opening today. “Typically the subject of paintings throughout art history, Rewriting Portraiture establishes how those who are the object of desire visually depict their realities.”

Silent Soho Auction For Boardwalks in Coney and Rockaways Saturday

“Bring Back The Boardwalks” is a silent auction with 100% of the proceeds going to the reconstruction of the severely damaged communities of Coney Island and The Rockaways.
