This is it! The last part of summer when you are still daydreaming, looking at the sky. The trees in all the parks are deep rich green, the city’s swimming pools are still teaming with people, the abandoned lots and railroad tracks are sprouting full-blown bushes and weeds that grow so tall they are over your head. Somewhere in those weeds is a secret hiding place where you’ll find a half pack of cigarettes and a porno magazine stowed by a teenager. Oh, they don’t read porno magazines anymore? It’s all on your phone?

Speaking of that topic, what about the disaster porn across all the corporate news shows every single day? Boy, that stuff sells! Hard to imagine they want to give up that money with all our eyes glued to TV millionaires like Rachel and Shawn and Blondy McBlonderstein and the rows of speaking Barbies and Kens spewing out one more outrageous piece of drivel after another. This presidency is a boon to business in so many fabulous ways! Almost better than war!

Street Art is alive and well and summer has produced a healthy crop of murals, wheat-pastes, stencils, tags, pieces, you name it. New Yorkers have a lot to say in public space – as well as a bounty of visitors, like the Brazilian Eduardo Kobra, who has been painting a new series of socially conscious walls with celebrities carrying the message around New York. On the street it’s always a mixed bag, and we like to see the huge walls as well as the small missives. You’re guaranteed a good crop this summer.

“Vote for the one candidate who does not need this job,” intoned one of the many speakers who are receiving a trust fund from DJ Trump this week at the RNC convention. That’s convincing, isn’t it?

Blonde Women’s Lives Matter. Make America Salem Again. I am the Law.

The Donald didn’t let us down again this week – and for those of you who think we’re being partisan, we’re not. This dork has been doing this stuff in New York since the 80s – and we are all used to his grandiose claims and mid-speech reversals. But this week the RNC looked like it was going to devolve into Lord of the Flies crossed with the Salem Witch trials. No wonder the Street Art we keep seeing is approximately 10 to 1 against him – and still he’s like a gushing geyser of humor, comedy gold! Except for the violent parts.

Owen Dippie is Dangerous in LA

Finishing up his bi-coastal tour of the US, Owen Dippie gave Los Angeles a dangerous mural before heading back to New Zealand. Complete with an official unveiling, the draping of US, Mexican, and New Zealand flags, and a re-enactment of the zombie scene from Thriller, Dippie needed only to show Michael Jackson’s eyes to evoke the memory of the larger-than-life superstar performer. It may be the detail or it may be the scale of the mural he is calling “Dangerous” in Downtown LA but anyone who passes by gets caught in Michael’s gaze for a moment.

A Street Artist Tribute to Michael Jackson a Year After His Death

The pain is still fresh for those of us who were shocked last June 25th to hear the talented musician and entertainer we grew up with had died too soon.

We found some comfort in the sincerity and hilarity of this couple of French buddies who like to make giant mural tributes to musicians who have died. Today at one minute past midnight and with much fanfare Shygun and Keflione released photos of their tribute to Michael Jackson.

Pulling together many of the visual elements associated with the 40+ year career of Jackson, the artists inject a dose of cheeky irreverence to keep it light, if verging on disrespectful. Perhaps the most impressive and endearing part of their work is that not only do these guys paint, they also re-enact shots and poses of their honoree in action.

BSA: Can you tell us about your personal history as artists?

Shygun and Keflione: We are Street artists from Rennes, France, and we started graffiti almost 10 years ago in abandoned factories.

I’m Shygun and I live and work in Rennes, France. I’ve been active as an artist for ten years now, with my bro Keflione since day one. I gradually moved away from graffiti but never let it go completely. Today I use a logotype representing a gun with a bent barrel as a signature, and I’m planning to publish a comic book series by the end of the year.

I’m Keflione, also known as Keflouis Vuitton or Keflouis XIV. I live and work in Paris as an artist and designer. Even if I don’t do graffiti, I’m a font addict and I still work in the streets.

BSA: Why did you do this tribute to Michael Jackson?
Shygun and Keflione: MJ tragically passed out a year ago now, and since we are kids from the 80’s, it was a big loss for us. His music is eternal, and we felt we had to pay him this massive tribute. Since he was an active musician since he was 5, they were many aspects of Michael’s life to represent. The first anniversary of his death was the right moment to release our masterpiece.

BSA: Who dresses in the costumes?
Shygun and Keflione: We both get dressed as MJ look-a-likes. The costumes are as important as the painting itself. It’s not Graffiti anymore; we consider it as a performance with a painting, costumes and a photoshoot. For every artist we paid tribute to, we enjoyed using their dress codes, accessories, and the whole atmosphere of their music. It’s a part of the whole concept, pushing our limits off the wall!

BSA: What motivates you to pay such strong tributes to the memory of musicians who have passed away?
Shygun and Keflione: It’s a kind of tradition in the Hip-Hop culture. As street artists, we never did such a thing. Here we wanted to give it a try with something more creative and fun. Biggie and Tupac are Hip Hop icons who are often painted in the streets. Our goal was to go further, and represent other main artists. As Graffiti is sometimes still considered as vandalism, we choose to ironicaly use celebrities to conquer a larger public. We had so much fun doing the first one (Bob Marley) so we choose to go for a series.

At the moment, Keflione is putting an exhibition together about a year when he travelled in Asia in 2008-2009 (India, Brunei, Singapour, Thailand, Cambodia). The first “Call ME His Majesty” show will presented at the Traffic-Art-Gallery in Brussels, Belgium, in February 2011.

Michael Gone Too Soon

We don’t have anything profound to say about Michael Jackson, and certainly nothing that hasn’t already been said better by others.

We just know that this city was affected strongly; from the sounds of his music pumping from cars and windows and rooftops over the last 12 days, to the spontaneous conversations in offices and bars and delis in many different accents, to the small written tributes on the streets, to T-shirt vendors seemingly instantly selling his image, to 24-hour a day MJ on the radio with call-in memories from listeners, to the gatherings on the pavement in front of jumbo-trons, to crowds jamming into theaters to watch the memorial on screen together, and our impromptu communal memorials at places like the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

His music accompanied most of us for a large percentage of our entire lives, and we know it will continue to; that’s the good part. We’ll hear it at house parties, block parties, clubs, bars, discos, in teenage bedrooms, in steamy backseats, at wedding receptions, high school proms, church barbecues, and, of course, blasting from stereos out on the streets of this city — this summer and probably every summer for a long time.

Almost everyone who mourns him says Michael was more like a brother than simply a pop star and agrees that this was a candle that went out too soon.

Action! That’s what is happening in the street art scene in New York,

despite the wretched economy and artists losing their dayjobs, and galleries of all types dreaming up new innovative ways to stay afloat, the street art keeps coming.

In one week only (the week we lost Michael Jackson) we hit only a few of the events going on that featured street artists – we’re considering rollerskates and interns at this point – and even if you can’t afford it, you feel rich! Plus the refreshments are usually free… just don’t take it on the street or you get a ticket.
