Images Of The Week: 10.13.13

Welcome! Now Go Home! That’s what Tony Carapachio at the corner deli used to say about all the foreigners moving into the neighborhood. Sounds like a lot of the comments being directed at Banksy by locals, although their voices are primarily drowned out by clicking iPhones.

The pie is big enough for everybody, and in a city where 176 languages are spoken by kids in our schools, we can probably handle new voices on the street. Our Banksy-related favorite development this week was the small pack of entrepreneurs who were selling access to his stencil on a wall in East New Yawk for $20 a pop. Nice! They’re not the first or the last who will endeavor to profit from his work.

Also this week came the definitive news that 5 Ptz in Queens will be razed in favor of a new condo development. It is privately owned and has transformed into a graffiti holy place over the last decade and a half, and while you could see the final outcome being something like this, many had held out hope that it would be preserved or saved by a rich Robin Hood sort of character – like Jay Z or even Banksy.

Images of the Week: 03.24.13

March 24, 2013 Artists

March 21 hit us this week and that means Spring and that means more birds, flowers, sidewalk sales, thigh-high shorts, and Street Art and graffiti are on their way! Great to find this new brick wall falling apart by Aakash Nahalini in the subway this week, and then to learn that it is a sketch for future ideas. Also we’re on the look out for a new sculptural Faile tribute to Revs somewhere on NYC streets, and you might have seen a few new bird houses from XAM. Aside from some of the regular players, you can be sure there are some new kids on the block because this form of expression continues to expand and whether its a one-off, or the start of a long career, the street continues to inspire artists to get their stuff out there and skip the proscribed route.

Meanwhile, here’s our weekly interview of the street, this week featuring Aakash Nihalani, Ayatollax, Bast, Be Super, David Gouny, El Sol 25, Foxx Face, and Oculo.

New Wheat-Pasted Letter Forms from El Sol 25

New text based stuff has been popping up that may remind you of ransom letters or a D*Face logo but it actually turns out to be Street Artist and former graff writer El Sol 25, who we are accustomed to seeing figurative painting mashups from. If you apply the same technique he favors of recombining heads, torsos, and limbs from various sources to create a new franken-form, it makes sense that this is how text would come out too. As with the other work, this appears to be entirely hand painted also. So, to review, these are hand-painted letter forms that are then wheat-pasted – is it a new category? Not exactly a piece is it? – and definitely not a tag.

The Sol Still Shines: El Sol 25 Hand Paints New Remixes

Street Artist El Sol 25 is back on the street with riveting visually displaced droids as he hand paints and wheat-pastes the future past on abandoned walls and construction lots through certain parts of New York. Looking at this evermore integrated fusing of limbs, torsos, and heads, you can imaging that the studio of El Sol 25 is a warehouse piled high with the anatomical spare parts of modern and historical figures and everyday people that he mischievously welds into remixed robots wandering the street.

A Monster Mash on the Streets

Seeing a monster on the street can make you pick up your pace a little.

Especially if it is a dark windy autumn night and the block you are on has no working street light. And if the leaves and garbage and random pieces of plastic are swirling in the air and clattering into cluttered little piles in the corners of doorways. Here’s an eclectic collection of spooks and skeletons and wild-eyed beasts created by today’s Street Artists and shot by photographer Jaime Rojo that may make your march along the footpath just a little more mysterious and monstrous as the wind picks up and you rush to your home for safety.

Sanpaku gan (三白眼) or Sanpaku (三白) is a Japanese term that means “three whites” and is generally referred to in English as “Sanpaku eyes”. The term refers to the iris being rather small, so that it only covers about two-thirds or less of the vertical axis of the eye; e.g. delineate an eye into four portions; the iris would only occupy one portion of the divided four sections; thus leaving the other three in white, hence “three whites”.

When the bottom of the white part of the eye, known as the sclera, is visible it is referred to as ‘Yin Sanpaku’ in Chinese lore. According to the myth, it represents physical imbalance in the body and is claimed to be present in alcoholics, drug addicts and people who over consume sugar or grain. Conversely when the upper sclera is visible this is called ‘Yang Sanpaku’. This is said to be an indication of mental imbalance in people such as psychotics, murderers, and anyone rageful. Stress and fatigue may also be a cause.^[1]

In August 1963, macrobiotic pioneer George Ohsawa predicted that President John F. Kennedy would experience great danger because of his sanpaku condition. This was reported by Tom Wolfe in the New York Herald Tribune.^[2]

People with sanpaku eyes may also be feared to be prone to violent or disordered behaviors.^{[citation needed]} There is no evidence for this belief, however.

John Lennon mentioned sanpaku in his song “Aisumasen (I’m Sorry)” from the 1973 Mind Games album. It is also briefly referenced in William Gibson’s Neuromancer, as well as in Michael Franks‘ 1979 song “Sanpaku”, and in The Firesign Theatre‘s piece “Temporarily Humboldt County”.
