More Pow! Wow! Hits as Picked by Martha in Hawaii (Part II)

Today we jump right in to the warm Honolulu waters for a swim before padding barefoot up to the painted walls of Pow! Wow! where photographer Martha Cooper is waiting camera in hand and looking for a fly swatter to smack down a camera drone that is buzzing around her head and getting in the way of her shots.

Here’s part deux of some of Ms. Cooper’s pics from PW 2014, beginning with an aquatic version of the sort of poker-playing canines popularized by illustrationist and painter Cassius Marcellus Coolidge about a hundred years ago that still persist in the offices of law firms and investment banks today. This large scale variation is by street humorist Ron English.

“Ron English painted marine animals playing poker. His brother-in-law who lives in Hawaii (I think) had been begging for this wall for a long time so Ron finally did it,” says Martha.

“I’m In Miami Bitch”, Andrew Kaufman photographs Wynwood

A. It has a good name, and
B. It’s the way Wynwood feels every year during Art Basel and this self published book by photographer Andrew Kaufman captures the excitement unpretentiously.

In the fall of 2012 Kaufman began walking the streets with camera in hand in what used to be called “El Barrio”, shooting the murals of the international Street Art magnet called the Wynwood District. The previously low-income and light manufacturing neighborhood had been transforming itself as a destination in the shadow of the decade old art fair across the water in Miami Beach. He discovered artists from in town and around the world painting walls side by side and a palpable thrill in the air in this 20 square block public space like none he had previously experienced.

“Every year in late November artists from around the world descend on the streets of Wynwood to remake the façade of almost every building, overhead door and nook or cranny where paint could be applied,” he says in this image packed softcover. He doesn’t try to romance it, he just lays it open for you to take a look and to possibly feel what it was like for him for a few weeks talking to artists, interviewing locals and pilgrims and internationally known names as they painted, listened to music, traded stories, passed a joint, ate barbecue, and got distracted by the bikinis, parties, hammocks and lawn chairs.

In a down-to-earth way Andrew steers clear of grandiosity or otherwise put a self-serving spin on the scene. He learns just by asking questions and taking photos, with highlights including conversations with Kenny Scharf, DAZE, and BooksIIII Bischof, who lays bare the conflicting feelings of local graff writers who had already been organizing and slamming walls organically for a handful of years before the real estate developer Tony Goldman brought his economic heft to flood the scene with international Street Artists.

The rapid change that neighborhood has undergone the other 11 months of the year has created rifts between the locals and the well-heeled newbies, and its good that Kaufman gives airtime to those perspectives as well, diplomatically describing the power struggles as “growing pains”. While some characterizations may be a bit naïve at times with statements like “there are no curators, no rules,” he still captures the near spiritual peregrination of idealist artists from around the US who hop trains and buses or hitch-hike to a warm sunny climate at the end of November with little more than a desire to find a wall to paint and a couch to crash on.

I’m in Miami Bitch is a personal account of the zoo and the spectacle and an historical capture of a moment on an evolutionary timeline that will become more valuable as the inevitable cultural seachange in this Miami neighborhood takes place and the presumptive commodification and gentrification runs its full course. For the moment you can still catch the crazy collaborative creative magic yourself just by showing up. But if you can’t, Kaufman is happy to share his sense of magic with you.

Box Truck Action! Exclusive Pics of the Mustard Tiger in the Wilds of LA!

For the box truck fans who like to see their graffiti and street art mobilized, here’s a new one from Melbourne’s Dabs & Myla and Boston’s Kem5 that is speeding through LA. With any luck, you’ll be stuck in a traffic jam with this one, and it will lower your blood pressure while you groove to some smoove songs. They call it “The Mustard Tiger Truck”.

Street Art Going Up Right Now in Miami – Process Pics from Mike Pearce

Miami is in full effect! Murals and cans and scissor lifts and beers and cameras are all going at once! Street Art has never been so well represented in Miami’s Art Basel as it is this weekend – in fact it is impossible to follow it all unless you are an octopus.

And opportunities are seized, while others are missed, and some are trampled underneath. Carlo McCormick writes in Paper Mag a pleasantly prickly on-point overview of the current events with an eye toward some of the sliminess. McCormick should know about the polluting and homogenizing effect of commerce and hype on a scene born in the street, having witnessed and documented first-hand the explosion of graffiti in the NY Downtown scene during the 1980s as well as the market implosion that hurt so many artists in it’s wake. Perhaps that’s why his piece ends with the populist summation,

“It’s all good whatever side of the town you want to walk on, but to our view the art that is taking place with the 99% in mind rather than in whorish acquiescence to the 1% is infinitely more lively, vital and relevant. It may not be making much money (unlike many here we’re too polite to ask about sales), but believe it or not, that’s not the point of art. “

Dabs and Myla Create Their Own “Best of Times” at ThinkSpace Tonight

Australian Fine and Street Artist duo Dabs & Myla have been living in LA for a little while and this much will be evident at their fun packed solo show tonight at ThinkSpace Gallery in Culver City. Their love of architecture and words mashed up with 50’s and 60’s hues and artifacts as realized on their works in the gallery travel around a cartoonish camp land.

With this installation, not restricted at all to framed works, they show why they are masters of a vernacular and astute observers of today’s geopolitical realities. When they ask you to breathe as they welcome you in their “Best of Times” world it is not a command as much as it is a cue to prepare yourself to experience their world of vignettes with a little nostalgia.

Opening Tonight “Street Art Saved My Life : 39 New York Stories” (LA)

If you are in LA tonight, please check out some New York stories at C.A.V.E. Gallery. The show is hung, the brand new pieces out back by Creepy, Gilf!, NohJColey, Adam Void, Hellbent, and Tiptoe are still wet, and Patrick just rollered a thick layer of black on the floors to cover up the mess we made. People from 7 or 8 countries have put in such personal and meaningful pieces, the quality is high, and so are a lot people in LA we’ve discovered. And there are a few surprises that you won’t believe – like Futura’s piece called “Brooklyn Street Art”, made of, guess what? And Nick Walker’s piece and accompanying mannequin will raise some eyebrows no doubt. It has been so great to work with these artists and these partners (ThinkSpace, C.A.V.E., Juxtapoz, LA FreeWalls, HuffPost Arts, LA MOCA) for the last half year to pull this together, and we are deeply indebted to everyone’s talents, vision, and positive attitudes. Before the doors are open, it feels like a total success. Love you guys and gals more everyday.

“Art in the Streets” Closes

Monday was the last day for the largest exhibition of graffiti and street art under one roof at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), “Art in the Streets”. Over the last four months the expansive show gave a little over 200,000 people an opportunity to see and learn about and understand a great deal more about the history of this multifaceted scene which continues to grow and morph and evolve around the world. Congratulations to curators Jeffrey Deitch, Roger Gastman, and Aaron Rose for their tenacity and everyone who played a part in putting this show together, a real collaborative effort.

Hundreds of household items have been painted, many of them interconnected with larger pieces, are all over the ThinkSpace Gallery right now as final prep is happening for tomorrow night’s Dabs and Myla show by the Melborne/LA couple who have been keenly tag teaming to finish everything on time. Now that the thumping headache from too many orange sodas on New Year’s Eve is gone, it’s time to regale little Baby 2011 with some eyeball pleasing baubles from sunny Miami. In early December many Street Artists converged upon this city to add to the sparkling traffic of Art Basel and to crush some major wallage.

Of course, not everybody finished their piece in time because there were parties to attend, booties to shake, and pretty things to watch workin’ it on the street. Dust settled and work completed, last week we climbed walls, squeezed through fences, and raced up railroad tracks to catch all the finished pieces for you. In the process we met some barking bulldogs and charming new friends, because Miami is mad friendly yo, and we even got some inside tips on hidden treasure.
