David Bowie 1947 – 2016

A few shots of David Bowie as art in the streets. A New Yorker as much as a Brixtoner, Bowie and his wife could be seen on the sidewalks, in shops and restaurants here over the last few decades – and of course his image showed up periodically as art on the streets as well.

Without fumbling too much for words at the news of his death we’ll just say that we at BSA and artists everywhere owe a large debt of gratitude to this man for making new paths for us to walk and encouraging us all to make our own. Our world will never be the same without him.

Celebrate life today because, “These are the Golden Years.”

Nina Pandolfo in New York on a Wall for “Little Things”

In town for her solo show at Coburn Projects on the Lower East Side, Brazilian graffiti/Street Artist/fine artist Nina Pandolfo is determined to retain a childlike innocence on this wall outside of her show. Three wide eyed figures are preserved in an age of wonder, small creatures popping from ones mouth and pastel patterns softly couching them like winter sweaters or quilt pieces decoratively filling the background.

Her debut solo gallery exhibition here, this new mural features Pandolfo’s deftly understated use of freehand aerosol spray, stenciled geometrics, and brushwork.  Part of a graffiti scene growing out of São Paulo during the last two decades, Pandolfo continues to establish her individual voice as a muralist on the street with a distinctly soft and feminine view of lifes’ details rendered with dreamy sensitivity.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

A stunning panoply of events all at once this Halloween weekend in New York – The Mets are in the “World Series” playing here and everybody is a fan, the New York City Marathon is today (oldest participant is nearly 95), and everybody’s clocks get set back an hour. More than your average number of freaks and weirdos have been on the subway and street and in bars and in your hallway, some asking for candy, and a lot of people decorated their haunted castles. Check out our Halloween Street Art posting from yesterday, Boo!

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Bifido, Binho, Cdre, City Kitty, Crash, Crummy Gummy, Curve, Hunt, London Kaye, Oldy, Rae, Ron English, Solus, Specter, Tony DePew, and Zafuto.

Benjamin Girette and Dysturb : 14 From 2014

14-from-2014-G-animation-banner-small-3pmer
Happy Holidays to all of you charming and sparkling BSA readers!
It’s been a raucous sleigh ride with you and we thank everyone most sincerely for your support and participation this year. A sort of tradition for us at the end of this December we are marking the year with “14 from 2014”. We asked photographers and curators from various perspectives of street culture to share a gem with all of us that means something to them. Join us as we collectively say goodbye and thank you to ’14.

Benjamin-Girette-Photographer-
A new Street Art team is hitting cities around the globe this year and they have disturbed some while delighting others. The mostly French collective of photojournalists named DYSTURB are wheat-pasting large reproductions of their photographs on selected streets as a way to bring the news of the world directly to passersby. “We are photojournalists who have taken onto the walls of your city to highlight stories under-covered by mainstream media,” says the group. Today DYSTURB co-director Benjamin Girette, who shot images during the Arab Spring and made a name for himself with his Instagram images of the Kiev uprising, shares with us his favorite shot of the year from the streets of his hometown.

“I took this image this summer on July 19th, 2014 in Paris. It is a demonstration for Gaza that quickly turned in to clashes with the police forces. I have a strong memory of this moment because four of my friends and colleagues were hurt during these protests. They were wounded by angry protesters, not by the police. This is something that is on the rise with many of todays protests – media correspondents are more and more often targeted for doing their work.”

~Benjamin Girette

Nether and New Community Murals This Summer In Baltimore

Nether and New Community Murals This Summer In Baltimore

A colorful harvest of local folk on walls here as we bring you images Nether has been painting this summer in his native Baltimore by himself and with friends. A mix of community projects and independently initiated walls painted on Baltimore’s surplus quantity of abandoned buildings, the style brings to mind community murals of the past, but it also has a genuinely new spirit. Nether and others like Gaia, LNY, and Mata Ruda are among some who are influencing and ushering in what BSA is calling “the new muralism”.

The new muralism has evolved in the last five years from clusters of Street Artists who were originally interested in getting their name out and to advocate in some cases for their sociopolitical viewpoints but who also are often responding to calls from communities for intermediaries who can help them tell their stories. Taking root in this city and others like Newark, Jersey City, Atlanta, Bushwick (Brooklyn), and others, artists take into account local roots and are creating themes and portraits of everyday heroes and heroines and telling their stories. These are US eastern seaboard names but we have seen and heard these sentiments from cities as far as Honolulu, Berlin, and Delhi. This is what happens when people talk to each other.

In cities where “Street Art” or “Urban Art” festivals have been hosted, artists and producers have heard criticism that the international circuit of visiting artists are not always sensitive to the culture and the history of the locality. Their point is enhanced by a certain homogeneity of styles recurring on walls in many cities that is somehow separate from the culture, like a chain store or restaurant. Many organizers have responded by being more inclusive of the locals and today we are seeing a mural making tributary of Street Art that is maturing with an altruistic, intention-driven interest in empowering neighborhoods and their various populations that is reflective of the local in addition to the global.

Pandemic Gallery Presents: El Celso “¡NO HABLA ESPAÑOL!” (Brooklyn, NY)

El Celso
brooklyn-street-art-el-celso-pandemic-gallery
Opening Reception

Friday, March 11, 2011, 7-11pm

¡NO HABLA ESPAÑOL! is El Celso’s most personal show to date. This new series of works was inspired by a recent trip to Peru where the artist became obsessed with posters made in the “chicha” style. These hand-made posters line city streets all over Peru and generally feature an eye-popping neon color palette and commercial graphics-inspired lettering. They are generally used to advertise working class concerts and other events. During a recent trip around Peru, in 2010, Celso began collecting discarded and out-of-date fragments of these posters – known as afiches chicha in Spanish – from the streets of towns such as Chachapoyas, Chiclayo, Cajamarca and Lima (to name a few).

Further inspired by their look, he established contact with the esteemed Fortunato Urcuhuaranga at Publicidad Viusa (publicidadviusa.com.pe), the print workshop that originated this iconic DayGlo look back in the 1980s. (Urcuhuaranga is a former radio DJ and he originally created these posters to advertise his station’s musical happenings.) Based on the outskirts of Lima, in the suburb of San Juan, Ate, this renowned family-run studio has produced posters for countless local Peruvian acts, as well as visual artists and arts organizations around the world.

In collaboration with the Urcuhuarangas, Celso created a series of posters inspired by the Peruvian chicha style. However Celso’s posters are a wry play on the idea of the advertisement: event posters created for non-events. Since last year, he has installed dozens of these on the streets of New York and Miami.

His exhibit and installation at the Pandemic Gallery will feature these colorful pieces, as well as fragments of the original Peruvian street posters that inspired them. Also on display will be a series of intricate collages on wood that recreate the feel of the way these posters inhabit the street. Most importantly, the show will feature a diminutive discotheque – a free-standing structure that will feature light, sound and wild graphics. All of it will serve as a tribute to contemporary Peruvian nightlife culture.
