Bushwick Beat: Stalking the Wild Street Art with Vincent Cornelli

Sure, Jef Aerosol had his show 2 Fridays ago, and he’s now back home in France. But it seems worth revisiting the amount of amazing moments I captured in Bushwick that day as a result of his energy and inspiration while he was in New York; One cannot help but feed off of it.

I want to give you some behind-the-scenes photos of the art and street scene that surrounded the artist at work. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did photographing and capturing them.

New York Street Art has so much variety due to it’s incredibly varied populations and neighborhoods, among other factors.

You are never going to get bored walking through New York’s boroughs because the sheer number of languages, cuisines, fashions, and music you will experience will continually surprise you and expose you to great new people.

Street art fan and photographer Carlito Brigante (aka Charles Le Brigande) has been hanging in Bed Stuy Brooklyn for a few years, and has fallen in love with the music and history of the Jamaican soundsystem. A recent piece he did in the street recalls the big mountains of music speakers that pump loudly in the street  with ska, reggae, and rocksteady music spun by a handful of disc jockeys engineers and MCs.

In addition to two of videos of that corner deli installation, Carlito engaged neighbors and shot pictures of them dancing in front of the paste-up. With a special affinity for the culture and the people, he loves street scenes that capture the flavor of this neighborhood.

Brooklyn Street Art: What is a “soundsystem” and where did they begin?
Carlito Brigante: A soundsystem can be described as a means to bring the music to the people. In Jamaican popular culture, sound systems first appeared in the ghettos of Kingston in the late 40’s, way before the birth of ska, rocksteady and reggae music. Poor people could not afford the high prices of jazz and rhythm & blues (R&B) concerts organized for the wealthy elite and tourists, so sound systems sprung up. DJ’s would assemble large heavy speakers, power amplifiers and generators and blast music all night in the streets.

Brooklyn Street Art: Can you talk about the genesis of the “rubadub session” video and the wheatpaste? What was the aim?
Carlito Brigante: The rubadub session project is a tribute to the Jamaican sound system culture. It was my way of bringing an unfamiliar art form (wheat-pasting) and combining it with a familiar cultural symbol (the soundsystem) as a gift to the neighborhood in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. One day I was walking-by a laundry in Bed-Stuy, and the shape of the wall reminded me of a huge speaker. I immediately thought of doing a piece representing a sound system there.

Brooklyn Street Art: It’s great how you feature people interacting with the art and with each other. What inspires you most about the project?
Carlito Brigante: The idea was to recreate the mood of a Jamaican soundsystem and capture people’s reaction. This corner is always very busy, people are hanging around there all the time, so by pasting-up on this spot, I knew that people would relate to the piece and would interact with it. I wanted to make them dance with no music!

Brooklyn Street Art: The neighborhood of Brooklyn called Bed-Stuy certainly has roots in the Jamaican soundsystem. Can you talk about your experience of living here?
Carlito Brigante: This piece was directly inspired by a personal “Bed-Stuy/Jamaican” experience. Two years ago during a block party, I took a photograph of a natty dread skanking in front of a massive wall of speakers. I mean, every time I go out to take pictures here, I find amazing material. Bed-Stuy is full of surprises. It is an ongoing source of inspiration for me, from a visual standpoint but also from a human perspective. I have met so many incredible people in this neighborhood and taken a good amount of images.

Brooklyn Street Art: How is this project related to your passion for street art and urban photography?

Carlito Brigante: With the rubadub session, I wanted to blend my passion for street art, urban photography and Jamaican culture. That’s the reason why I have created this “background”.  I knew that the spot was pertinent, that the piece would generate genuine reactions and that I would be able to take great photographs.

It was great to see people dancing and jamming throughout the whole process.

Vinny Cornelli: Jef Aerosol in Bushwick

Photographer Vincent Cornelli was out on a legal wall tour with international stencil artist Jef Aerosol this Saturday; With a name like Aerosol, you don’t invite photographers to watch you work otherwise. The sunny January afternoon pretty much blew Vinny’s mind, and he writes here about how he got such rockingly cool pictures:

On Saturday, I had the privilege of showing Jef Aerosol around the streets of Bushwick, Brooklyn. I think the day was the perfect example as to why the Street Art Movement is so special…and it is deserving of capital letters.  Encounters such as these are not only incredibly rewarding and inspiring, but they foster an intimate connection between you and a city that is changing right in front of you.  It was one of the greatest of days

When I met Jef, I was photographing the front door of Eastern District/Ad Hoc Gallery.   It was a warm greeting, with instant recognition of the other before exchanging “hellos.”

Everything from start to finish breed this notion of connectedness – from Eric of Eastern District giving us a ride to Veng’s wall; to catching up with Ali and Garrison of Ad Hoc, listening to their exploits up and down the eastern side of the US; to Veng offering up a nice piece of real estate on a wall he often works with.

It was also quite nice to have company from Stephan Missier and Becki Fuller, two great street art photographers who were around for a better part of the day.  It was a day where everyone just seemed to fit so well with one another.

I felt so comfortable with Jef that I even asked him for some thoughts on a couple larger life-changing decisions in my own life.  I thought the perspective he offered was quite spot on.  He is a warm, witty and well-spoken man, confident in his outlook and mindset.  It shows in his detailed and carefully placed stencils, and in his smile.

Specter: The Gentrification Series

To use a mangled metaphor, it looks like street artist Specter has thrown his terry cloth headband into the basketball ring in the ongoing Atlantic Yards dispute between pro-development and anti-gentrification forces in downtown Brooklyn.

For those of you who have been living under an IKEA, gentrification has been plowing through New York City since at least the 1950’s and it went on steroids in the 1990’s as developers began mowing down anything in their path by brandishing a legal claim of “Eminent Domain”.

Don’t take my word for it, even conservative stalwart George Will wrote about it’s perceived mis-use a few weeks ago in the Washington Post.

For my money, and I’m broke, social critique doesn’t get richer than this, and this series will get tongues wagging if these posters stay up for any period of time before being bulldozed.  Start the clock!

Included in the Atlantic Yards plans are new condos and a giant shiny new stadium for the basketball team The New Jersey Nets (huh?). That is helpful to know when looking at these hand made posters that have appeared in the affected neighborhood; the gentrifying forces of the moneyed class are depicted as parodies of movie genres; a Kung-fu movie, a horror movie, and a high-stakes pimps-n-hos movie.

The genres are employed effectively, and point clearly to topics not usually so blatantly discussed when talking about gentrification – I’m thinking specifically of the one called “Caucasian Invasion”. That one might get some of our more socio-politically astute neighbors in a frothy choked-up indignation.

As you can see across the bottom of the pieces, the hand painted posters are also for an art show at the MoCADA gallery in two weeks.  But these are more than merely advertisements.

Trusto Corp, Kid Acne and EMA Trample Through Brooklyn

Aided by Kid Acne’s small army of sword wielding vixens and EMA’s genteel mustachioed dude, Trusto Corp left some words for thought on the streets of Williamsburg.

Geez it’s great to be back home in the freezing bitter city!  What have we missed?

Went parading through the ever-changing Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn yesterday and BAM, we’ve been hit! Always keep your eyes peeled in Brooklyn, even as you hobble up the street shaking from cold, avoiding patches of black ice. It’s amazing how sometimes things come in threes, like the Three Muskateers, the Three Stooges, and of course, Triple XXX ratings at your local porno theatre.

Kid Acne, whoever that is, must also be a fashion designer or a costume designer or just fancies laddies who play dress-up – because this new fleet of pastie-ups are chic and sexified, and possibly violent. EMA rings in that old-world charm with the oval locket portraits of a guy who is probably part of a barbershop quartet.  And don’t ask me about Trusto Corp – these very seriously realistic looking signs have a variety of sentiments that range from encouraging illegality to insulting me for being fat. Which I’m not!

M-City Hits Queens – and collaborates with Gaia in Bed Stuy

The country is in the grip of a COLD SNAP!  Forecasters are predicting a wind chill of -50 degrees in the Dakotas tonight.

Good thing M-City has his orange pants!

Those insulated winterized dungarees kept M-City warm in December when he was doing a one-man factory-cityscape with Ad Hoc in Queens, and right now as he finishes a collaboration with Gaia in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn.  Here’s some pictures and comments from both installations and both Street Artists.

Brooklyn Street Art: How did you get involved with this project?
M-City:
I’m on holidays in NYC. I love to travel and paint in different places, so it’s good to be here and leave my work on the streets of NYC. I asked before my trip some friend about how to get some walls to paint. They found me this space via Ad Hoc Gallery. It took me three and a half days to do this wall with snow and really bad weather.

Brooklyn Street Art: What is the inspiration behind the piece?
M-City:
It’s a story about the industrial city jungle. There are some factories that  look like an animal. I chose bulls and elephants. They are very strong like engines in factories. In the background it’s a city landscape and leaves. Of course as always in all my works everything is black and white.

Brooklyn Street Art: Is it hard to do this work in cold weather conditions?
M-City:
Not really, of course summer is much better to paint. In my country at this time is the same weather. If you use stencils, it’s only one problem … wind. If you use one it’s easy, but I use sometimes 100-200 stencils for one piece. And if the wind is coming you must have a lots hand to catch them all.

Brooklyn Street Art: What is your wish for 2010?
M-City: Nothing special, keep all good waves from 2009, and create more good waves in the new year…

Last night in Brooklyn M-City and Gaia worked together on a collaboration, a city scape of hundreds of buildings with two large screaming starling heads emerging from the clutter – a wall scored by Brooklynite Gallery just for the installation.

During the roughly 6 hours in 25 degree weather, many people walking by stopped to say hello and ask questions about what the art was, how it was created, and if it had anything to do with the Martin Scorcese film that is happening a couple blocks away. Two spritely teen-age girls wanted to know if we were shooting a video, because, if so, they would like to be in it. One woman inquired about how she could get her work up on the wall sometime.  Two school boys asked about 30 questions in quick succession.  The questions kept everyone entertained and distracted from the cold, which caused toes and brains to freeze. Unfortunately, the source of electricity (a beauty shop) had to go home after their last hair-do, and the artists will have to finish the mural soon.

Brooklyn Street Art: How many stencils did you use this time?
M-City: For this piece I used 3 sizes of buildings. About 50 of the small size, the medium size about 50, and the large size maybe 10 or 12. I don’t know how many stencils I have, I never count.  I probably have about 200 today.

M-City:
No. For me, no. In Poland now it’s winter. It’s more cold than here.  It’s not a perfect time, but it’s okay. This is better for stencils because if it is too hot, the paint is sticky. And it is not windy, so I don’t need 20 hands to keep hold of all my stencils.

While M-City took a break to warm his hands on the projector light-bulb and block Gaia’s view, we asked Gaia a couple of questions:

Brooklyn Street Art: Tell me about this bird you are doing.

Gaia: I made this starling for a show in L.A. that’s opening this Friday. It’s about endangered species. So I decided it would be an interesting perspective to take a species that is, in fact, endangering other species. The starling is an invasive animal that ravages crops and out-competes. So this is a screaming starling head.  I’m going to do two.

Brooklyn Street Art: When they scream, what does that signify?
Gaia:
It’s more just a frightening gesture.  Especially when I put two of them together it forms a tarantula, kind of scary, kind of tough.  People have told me that my most successful work is stuff that’s not effeminate.  And this spot is interesting to paint because it’s totally dilapidated but with the projector, no matter how textured or dis-assembled the surface is… it works.  It’s a pretty sh*tty looking building so once you cover it over with art work it looks better.

Brooklyn Street Art: Well, there was a local minister that just stopped by who’s building a new church in the neighborhood, and stopped by to say “Thank you” and how happy he was that this art was going up.
Gaia: Yeah that is super dope, that is so awesome.  He seemed like a very nice guy.

Brooklyn Street Art: This hot chocolate is not very good – they just dumped that Swiss Miss mix into this cup – it’s supposed to have half this much water.
Gaia:
It’s hot, that’s all that matters. You know it’s probably all at the bottom, you have to swirl it around.  (swings the cup around) Oh, yeah, that totally made a difference.  Actually, not that much of a difference.

Winter Chill? Burn Your Art!

A few weeks ago Street Artist Celso and some of his friends decided to have an art show in Miami Beach during the much ballyhooed Art Basel show.

As a response to the aforementioned ballyhoo, and perhaps as a commentary about the romance with and commercialization of street art, the culmination of the “Art Burn” show was to light all of it on fire and grin mischievously. As an additional dystopian thrill for the assembled pyro-artiacts, a copy of Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was torched also, after memorizing of course.

Gaia Hand Paints a Red Roll-up

Street artist Gaia is often thought of primarily for wheat-pasted lino prints of animal/human mashups as metaphor, but it’s nice to note that adept hand-painting is also in Gaia’s quiver of skills.

Here’s a brief motion collage of a hand-painted installation a few weeks ago on a roll-up door in Chinatown, NYC. Photographed by Keith Schweitzer and invited by No Longer Empty, Gaia creates a rooster portrait, where the proud sitter penetrates the passerby with an intense gaze.

Or is it a blank stare? I never know.

Tristan Eaton of New York’s Thunderdog Studios was working last week in Miami during the Primary Flight exhibition with many of his peers and yet-to-meet friends. The show was an opportunity for people to show their skills, gain appreciation from a new audience, and enjoy the pleasures of a sanctioned wall.

“The background was wheat pasted, then white washed, then hand painted with enamel, brushes, markers and mop tops, ” says Tristan.

Brooklyn Street Art: How did you get this wall in Miami?
Tristan Eaton: I got it from my pal Books who organized all the artists and walls for Primary Flight. It was on Easy Street Gallery which was founded by Crome of MSG.

A Wild Beauty, Indeed!  (Tristan Eaton)

Brooklyn Street Art: Can you talk about the inspiration behind the project?
Tristan Eaton: It’s gonna sound really corny, but I was inspired by something my Mother said about ‘Wild Beauty’. Before painting, I had no pictures or layouts of the wall, so I couldn’t really plan what to do in advance. I had to make it all up on the spot over the course of 3 days and hope for the best.

Brooklyn Street Art: What kind of preliminary work did you have to do before getting there?
Tristan Eaton: I normally get my giant photocopies (for background) made here in the city then cut them out by hand at my studio in LIC. We prepared about 1,000 square feet of wheat paste graphics for this mural and general bombing and stuff.

Brooklyn Street Art: Did you get hit by the rain or have other distractions?
Tristan Eaton: Yes! We had torrential rain on and off over 2 days. We kept having to stop and wait it out. Luckily it only rains for about an hour in Miami! On top of that you have legends like Futura and Ron English are just walking around town all week at Art Basel, so we’d stop to BS every once in a while when someone came to visit our wall.

Brooklyn Street Art: Are you satisfied with your final project?
Tristan Eaton: I think so. Working on that scale in that time frame, little things always go wrong. It’s not supposed to be perfect I guess, so I’m okay with a certain amount of messy mistakes. I’m most satisfied with the response from locals so far. Even if I could of done better, they love it!
