A Journey Through the Ridiculous, the Absurd and the Extreme.

Applying pen to paper is one of the simplest forms of art one can produce. However, to do it well is a true feat No matter how simple or complex, the drawing conveys the artist’s id and deepest subconscious. In our next show at Mighty Tanaka, we present Casual Encounters, as we take a look at the humorous and otherwise ridiculous illustrations of what make us human. Featuring the artwork of Lauren Asta, Jac Atkinson, Abe Lincoln Jr., Rick Midler, Reginald Péan and RTTP, this show provides an off kilter version of life.

This modern storybook show exemplifies the extremes and absurdities that one may encounter and the interpretations behind it. From lesbian orgies to cartoony and graphic introspections, the work of Casual Encounters is both fun and enticing, with a style of illustration for everyone.

Ranging from the highly detailed to the sublimely minimal, Casual Encounters offers the viewer an escape from reality, if only for a night.

The second edition of INDEPENDENT, the award winning temporary exhibition forum devised by and for gallerists will take place at the former DIA Center for the Arts and building at 548 W 22nd Street March 3-6, 2011 during New York Art Fair Week.

INDEPENDENT will take place on the second, third and fourth floors of the building and will be open to the public free of charge, Thursday from 4 to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and Sunday from 12 to 4 PM. The layout of the exhibition is customized to reflect the spatial and curatorial concerns of each of over 40 international participants, who are presenting solo and group exhibitions as well as shared collaborative presentations.

INDEPENDENT strives to reexamine traditional art fair models and methods of presentation, in response to the changing attitudes and growing challenges for artists, galleries, non-profits, curators and collectors as the experience of viewing and interacting with contemporary art in a group context.

The international list of participating galleries and non-profits was developed through conversations and shared conceptual engagements as opposed to the application process that typically characterizes the contemporary art fair. In so doing, the participants enter into a consortium of shared ideas and vision for their approach to their contemporary art practice.

INDEPENDENT was conceived by Elizabeth Dee (Elizabeth Dee, New York and founder of X Initiative) and Darren Flook (Hotel, London). The 2011 edition of Independent was developed in conjunction with creative advisor Matthew Higgs (White Columns, New York) as well as co-directors Jayne Drost and Laura Mitterrand.

Fountain New York 2011 Spotlight: Artist Greg Haberny

When you first encounter the artwork of Greg Haberny, you find yourself on a detour off the main road of contemporary art, exploring an alluring roadside attraction of weather-beaten highway signs, familiar childhood characters nightmarishly stripped of their make-up, and political and pop icons soaked in acetate. Though the images and creatures are entrancing, below the feeling of familiarity is a lingering discomfort, an unease that spreads throughout the subconscious. Be it politics, commercialism, or consumerism, Haberny scrapes images of their superficial veneer, revealing grotesque truths that are otherwise glazed over.

Inspired by family members practicing Impressionism and Folk Art, swayed by classic film and repulsed by the perversion of the human psyche, Haberny combines the beauties and the monstrosities of everyday life in a way that resonates with each viewer. His art takes on a life force of its own, deviously sinking into the dark corners of the minds of those who look.

When you come upon Greg Haberny in the maze of Fountain booths, you will discover yourself immersed in his version of a brave new world. Haberny goes beyond individual artworks, transforming his entire space into an all-consuming installation, an atmospheric sensory-overload. While we can’t reveal what Haberny has in store for Fountain NY 2011, his previous Fountain installations Pop Culture Wasteland and Wanker’s Ball ensure we are all in for a surprising, unruly, and uniquely-Haberny experience.

Fountain Art Fair was founded in 2006 as an attempt to leverage support for smaller independent galleries to gain access to larger collectors and critics. Since its inception, Fountain has held five exhibitions in Miami, one in Chicago, and is now celebrating its sixth exhibition in New York. From its roots deep within the independent Williamsburg art scene, Fountain has grown to represent over 20 international avant-garde galleries and projects, showcasing progressive primary-market works. Fountain’s venue, Pier 66 Maritime, is a 10,000 square-foot complex adjacent to all the major New York exhibitions such as The Armory Show and Pulse New York.

Presents his first UK solo show ‘WHO AM I?’ at the Pure Evil Gallery on the 17th of February..The show runs until March 6th, at which point another 0Š2Famiglia Baglione¦Ð member FLIP begins his first UK solo exhibition at the gallery.
Brazilian artist Alexandre ¡ÝSesper¡Ü Cruz spent his adolescence absorbed in music and skateboarding – building ramps, making fanzines that documented the Sao Paulo art scene, and recording k-7 compilations. These interests influenced the sticker and paste up poster campaigns he launched around the city in 1999.
Sesper is best known for his unique mixed media artwork. He uses recycled material such as paper, cardboard and wood as his surface and paints over these with oil pastel and latex, incorporating layer upon layer of texture and color. A member of the renowned Brazilian art collective, the Famiglia Baglione, Sesper has participated in and filmed many of their live painting and gallery installations around Brazil.
He produces music and is a full time vocalist for Garage Fuzz band since 1991, as well having sung and recorded in the following bands: OVEC, PSYCHIC POSSESSOR, SAFARI HAMBURGUERS, PAURA, and the projects: NOTWORK, INTROSPECTIVE, LOFI EXPERIMENTS, VALLEJO X SUNSET, 5 GAS QUESTION, FLIPTOP, and others.

Black Rat Projects, the London based publisher and art gallery, under the dynamic direction of Mike Snelle has been at work on a new print show highlighting a disciplined and revered practice to art making with works by a number of Street Artists including Swoon, Matt Small, Roa, Know Hope, Nick Walker, Pure Evil, Shepard Fairey and Banksy.An annual tradition for Black Rat is to mount a show whose primary focus is the edition, and this year brand new prints are being released by Matt Small, Candice Tripp and Swoon.

Swoon’s print is called  “Sambhavna” and is her portrait of three inquisitive and timid girls that has appeared on the streets of NYC and in parts of Europe.

The past week with Swoon in the Black Rat studio has been a great experience for Mike, who enthusiastically described her complex print, “The Sambhavna” print is pretty monumental. It’s1020 x 1445 mm (40.16″ x 56.89″) and in an edition of only 28. Each one is made up of 4 layers. The background is a huge sheet of white paper and the yellow is a collograph. The green/blue halos are laser cut and finally the girls themselves are screenprint (I think around 8 colors on each). Each one is incredibly time consuming but they have such a great depth because they have been built up.”

To mark the occasion with a celebratory event and to christen their new ‘artist in residency’ project, the Belgian artist ROA, fresh from his trip to Mexico, is in town at the moment to work on an indoors installation in the gallery. ROA is currently at work adding dimension to his work by constructing a new sculpture in the middle of the gallery using doors, windows and unexpected openings (images to come).

The complete list of artists for this show is Swoon, Matt Small, Roa, Know Hope, Gaston Francisco, Grayson Perry, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, Lucien Freud, Tracey Emin, Chris Ofili, Nick Walker, Pure Evil, Peter Doig, Shepard Fairey and Banksy.

In addition, the night of the preview Black Rat Projects will be presenting a performance of sorts by Stoke Newington’s  local printmakers  The Henningham Family Press. They have been invited to set up their  “Chip Shop” to provide an “inclusive insight into the fundamentals of printmaking”.
