Miami in The House All Weekend

This weekend the fun is for Street Art in Miami and check out some of our recommendations (Best Miami Street Art: BSA Picks Awesomest for Basel ’12) for hoofing it around that we posted Wednesday. Tonight of course there are a number of grand opening parties/after parties (including Fountain), but really just being on the street is equally fun if not funner! “Deck the Walls” at Stolen Space (London)

Greeting cards are a nice way to say Merry Christmas to Grandma, and for suburban white middle class families to distribute photos proving that their kids are not on drugs. This is Stolen Space Christmas Show celebrates greetings cards and holiday cheer with D*Face, Word to Mother, Will Barras and David Bray among others putting their own imprimatur on Christmas. Come on, Uncle Bert and Aunt Dolittle will be there, so comb your hair, put some shoes on and get out of the house!

“Rinse & Repeat” Group Show at Ambush (Sydney, Australia)

With a collection of Australian Graffiti and Street Art Artists, “Rinse & Repeat” finds its inspiration by taking a look at the Old Masters and re-interpreting them with their own styles and techniques. An interesting proposition albeit fraught with risks – there are a few good ones here though that will delight your academic/street sensibilities. Included in the line up are: Adnate (AWOL Crew), Bridge Stehli, Cam Wall, Carl Steffan, Deams (AWOL Crew), Fintan Magee, Guido van Helten, Phibs, Shannon Crees, Slicer (AWOL Crew) , Team and Teazer.

Skewville in France, Quel Surprise! (Lille, France)

Hope they realize what they have gotten themselves into, but Vertikal Gallery is hosting Brooklyn Street Art collective Skewville for a solo show entitled “Be Inside”. Considering we have had one or two Lillians in Brooklyn putting work up on the streets over the last few years, this sounds like a cultural exchange program of some kind, right?

“Sowing The Seeds of Love” – Just Seeds Group Show Friday (Manhattan)

The Art Collective Just Seeds new group exhibition titled “Sowing The Seeds of Love” opens tonight at the Munch Gallery in Manhattan. More Skewville Irony: “It’s What’s Outside That Counts”

When a museum is worried that it looks too much like a Home Depot from the outside, even though it has Jeff Koons inside, you could question how they decided on an architect. How they chose an artist to adorn the facade is another question. Street Artist’s Skewville know how to twist clichés and axioms to reveal their reverse, so it occurred to them when looking at the place in this town north of New York City that it was a problem of perception. And they know how to turn a phrase for effect. These are the guys who once fashioned a lawn clipper with foam rollers to print “Keep On Grass” with green paint across street walls, after all.

So when The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) got their new Skewville this summer it wasn’t a surprise that the witty sentiment expressed with the broadside signage caused some confusion – and consternation. Says the artist, local businesses thought it violated signage zoning laws. They could have been a bit miffed because, “people were slowing down in their cars in front of the museum and causing traffic,” surmises Ad Deville, one half of Skewville.

Not unlike many skewed sentiments the brothers have rolled with bucket paint across the top of an abandoned factory building, these blasting words are definitely visible from a distance – and they make you crack a smile. Skewville may have once again gotten somebody’s city officials twisted and hot under the collar, but this time it’s a twist of perception that ultimately allows this blocky text message to ride, says Ad, “The museum stated that this is not a sign – its art. And it’s going to run for a year”.

Skewville’s work is from their participation in Peekskill Project V.

From their web site: “Peekskill Project: A Citywide festival of Contemporary Art devoted to… bringing cutting edge contemporary art out of the museum and into the community. Using the city as a stage, Peekskill Project activates the urban environment and its inhabitants through site-specific art exhibitions, performances and screenings sited in multiple venues throughout Peekskill.

Peekskill Project V is a departure from previous installments of the project, which were limited to a single weekend of events and exhibitions. This year’s festival begins with an exciting opening weekend of free exhibitions and programming on September 29th & 30th, 2012, and continues in a series of monthly events through the end of July 2013. Peekskill Project V programming occurs on second & third Sundays, October 2012 – July 2013″

Happy Friday Peepuls. Now before we all set our sights on Friday art parties and dancing and getting crazy and writing on people’s foreheads with markers, it’s time for us to get Debatified so we are all ready to vote. Obama is ahead in New York by like a hundred and five percent but apparently there are some states in the imperfect union where it is still a toss-up and people are just not sure who’s better. Moderator Candy Crowley scoured all of New York’s Long Island Tuesday and came up with only 82 people who still don’t know who they’re voting for – 12 of them polled just before airtime were also not sure who is on the one dollar bill, so there’s a clue for ya right there. Here’s a capsulized version of what went down.

Welling Court: A New York Mural Block Party Like No Other

The community mural: A time honored urban tradition rooted in local flavors and tastes. Every major city and many small towns have them and most people who live near one of these colorful creations also have stories they can tell you about them. Apart from the graffiti scene or the Street Art scene, Allison and Garrison Buxton have one focus in mind when curating artists into this neighborhood in Queens to paint for the third year in a row: The nexus of community and creativity.

The styles, perspectives, and command of the aerosol can may vary, but the enthusiasm and refreshing lack of attitude at this non-commercial weekend event are undeniable. This year the number of participating artists grew to over 90 and the number of dishes served by neighbors on folding buffet tables in the middle of the street was probably 10 times that. It’s easy to see that this working class neighborhood full of racing kids on bikes and people posing for photos in front of murals is one true definition of New York today. For this sunny summer event, it’s the electricity of live creativity on the street that draws people out to talk with each other.

In a world gone wireless it’s worth noting that we still have a number of them strung across city streets in New York, and people like slinging sneakers over them. They have a magnetic attraction to each other, these wires and old sneakers, like kids and ice cream trucks, politicians and press conferences, teenage boys and porno. And when there is not a telephone or electrical wire available, those kicks like to hang in the branches of trees too.

Urban folklore never quite decides on the reason for this practice – sneakers on a wire could be a marquee for your local crack house, a tribute to a person who passed, or a way to pay back your cousin Ricky for telling your friends that you kissed Marleen Mathewson in the back of the bus.

Whatever the original reason for this practice, Street Artists have been playing with the custom over the last decade and finding new ways to festoon the cityscape with footwear. Yesterday’s appearance of new airborne dogs covered by Olek’s crocheted camouflage on the Lower East Side reminded us of more street photos by Jaime Rojo that play on the same theme.

Welling Court, in Queens, NYC is a city block where three-family homes intermingle with small family owned business — a nice old-fashioned model with today’s 1^st and 2^nd generation immigrants taking a crack at an American dream. The art-minded Buxtons, Allison and Garrison, never seem to tire of providing a safe, roomy space to artists to create within and for the third year they have hosted “Welling Court” here in this neighborhood. But it’s more than a bunch of mismatched weirdo art kids getting up on walls with their own vision and isolated from their surroundings. Allison and Garrison want all the kids to play together nicely and that’s why yesterday there were also bicycle races down the main block with a chalk finish line, a section of wall reserved for all ages to try their can skillz, and that’s why moms and dads brought out food in metal trays and set up barbecues and used a truck as a mobile dj booth to blast cumbias and reggae inflected dance/hip-hop/two-step/classic rock all up and down the block.

As we celebrate Father’s Day today we gotta hand it to the ones who stay involved and engaged in their kids lives, and to the stand-in Dads who give guidance and encouragement to all of us when the real ones aren’t to be found. We also salute the Buxtons’ experiment in building art and community here, where aerosol fumes mix with barbecue smoke and an international bevy of Street Artists come to let their guard down and get their game on. It’s not commercial, often exceeds expectations, and always engenders feelings and behaviors of “family”. And doesn’t everybody benefit from that?

We begin this Sunday’s Images of the Week with a small selection of some of the completed murals from yesterday. We’ll bring you the full account later in the week. The second part of today’s images show BSA readers some exclusive images of new Street Art sent to us from around the world. Let’s start off with this little bundle of joy from New York Street Artist and fine artist Dan Witz, who may have based this portrait on someone he knows quite well.

Street Artist Yote sends this tribute to an artist and teacher. “Frederick Brown recently passed away and I wanted to dedicate this mural to him. It is entitled “Flowers for Frederick.” He was best known for his portraits of jazz singers and musicians. I talked to him on the phone this spring in hopes to get advice on how to loosen up my style and not be such a perfectionist from a real expressionist. He was too sick to talk for long but I do know he used to instruct students to complete two dozen paintings in a week and things like that to get them out of their head and into painting”~ Yote
