And The Award for Best Fluffer Goes To…

Remember those awards they used to give in high school to the graduating class to recognize, commemorate, and bestow the outgoing students with a sense of self worth and set an example for the rest of the current alumni?  “Best Biology Student”, “Class Thespian”, “Most Likely to Succeed” – how many of these titles had a predictive power that could be verified in later years is a funny question. Street Artist Anthony Lister is giving his own interpretation of the awards (and punishment) systems that course through our daily life in his first show in Canada, “Beauty of Failure”.

Thanks to an increasingly warped view of the world presented by moneyed interests in the commercial and tabloid driven media universe, some argue that our very ability to critically evaluate what is to be valued in society is at risk. With his sharply pointed depictions of frothy socialites and his signature super heroes receiving gold statuettes for imaginary awards, Lister challenges viewers to evaluate their own perceptions of what is valued, and why.  Equally interesting, of course, are the awards that are missing.

7 Day Weekend

“7 Day Weekend” is a chaotic look at footage of Lister that was edited into a montage looking for a storyline. It’s characterized as “Sick Fun from the Whole Lister Family”

“Art From The Underground”

Speaking of Lister, here’s a new promo video for the show in San Diego next week at Edgeware Gallery. Among artists like Shepard Fairey and Chor Boogie, street art photographer Jaime Rojo will be showing images from New York, including a huge Anthony Lister piece on the street in Brooklyn.

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome Anthony Lister to his first solo exhibit with the gallery as well as his first exhibition in Canada.

The Beauty of Failure is a unique look at the reward and punishment systems, and more specifically when the two overlap. The paintings and sculptures in this show demonstrate a tounge in cheek look at contemporary pop culture through Anthony‘s signature artistic style.

Anthony’s paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pullfrom his experiences as a youth in Australia. Superheroes, skateboarding, graffiti, tattoos, the internet, and pop culture are reflected in his artistic practice. His fine art has been displayed in galleries across the globe in cities such as New York, London, Los Angeles, Sydney, and we are excited to add Toronto to the list.

Logan Hicks and C215 in “Parallel Universe” at Show & Tell (Toronto)

Two Stencil Street Artists known well to Brooklyn are in a Parallel Universe November 6th in Toronto.

Two of the best on the scene today

Two of the best on the scene today

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome world-renowned international stencil artists C215 (Paris) & Logan Hicks (NYC) to their first exhibition in Canada.

The show titled “Parallel Universe” is a unique look at stencil art, a subculture of graffiti that can be traced back over 30 years. Through their medium of choice both artists aim to capture the essence of city life. Logan creates highly detailed renditions of cityscapes, focusing on architecture, alleyways, and scenes that might not be easily recognized as beautiful. C215 on the other hand aims to capture human emotions and feelings through the subjects he chooses to paint, with his focus mainly on homeless, anonymous, and people who are generally rejected by society. The juxtaposition of both artists style is really something special, while they are close friends and work in a common medium their artistic styles vary significantly. “Parallel Universe” marks the first joint show between the pair and will feature several collaborative works as well as pieces that are inspired by one another.
