BSA-Images-Week-Nov2014

It’s a free-for-all bag of mushrooms this week – or psychedelic toads to lick, in the case of Don’t Fret, who starts us off with a 2014 NYC tourist dressed head to toe in an Ebola suit. Naturally, he still has a fanny pack. Also notable are the new bus stop takeovers by Spector, who makes his new and subtly startling installations more contextual than you’ve seen before.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Borf, Bunny M, Cali Killa, Don’t Fret, Eelco Virus, Esteban Del Valle, Evoke Fym, Gold Dust, Matthew Reid, June, Knarf, Meer Sau, Not Your Police Dept, SAMO, Senz, Specter, The Broke MC, and This is Awkward.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

BOS, Bushwick Collective, Juicy Fest, RedHook Studio Tours, Northside Festival, Welling Court… BK and QNS are bombed with artists in June – and today’s throwdown in Bushwick is just one tab on the 12-pack to pop and spray all over your friends on a hot summer day. When it comes to street art we’re in this new legal mural phase right now and when you head out to Bushwick Open Studios today you will see freshly painted and in-process walls. Don’t worry, we’re still seeing a lot of uncensored freewheeling self-selecting artistic installations of the unsanctioned variety – and that sector is alive and well.  See you out in the street!

Here our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring

Adam Fujita, BustArt, Cb23, Chris Dyer, Dain, Dasic, Don Rimx, Ethos, FoxxFace, Jerk Face, Labrona, Meca, Meer Sau, Milo, Muro, Osch, Princess Hijab, QRST, Ricardo Cabret and Son, Sem, Skewville, Stinkfish, Stovington 23, Txemy, Vexta, Zaira

If you are lucky enough to be in NYC this Sunday, get out of the house and head over to East Williamsburg and Bushwick. You’d have the chance to see many of these murals in person and perhaps and artist or two while applying the final touches to his or her wall. Click HERE for more info on The Bushwick Collective block party taking place today. And HERE for the Juicy Art Fest which is not happening until June 5, 6 and 7 but artists are currently busy at work on their murals and it is only a short walk between the two.

Images Of The Week: 09.01.13

brooklyn-street-art-judith-supine-jaime-rojo-01-09-13-web-1

September is the perfect time of the year for Street Art in NYC – and shout out to the NYTimes who ran a double spread and video this week with images of Street Art and graffiti you can see here every week – including the great MOMO piece in Dumbo that was commissioned by Two Trees, and walls from the Bushwick Collective, 5 Pointz, Welling Court, Hunts Point, Coney Island and more. Seeing the collection made us think about how much BSA really covers throughout New York and the world every month and that made us happy as Bill DiBlasio, the apparent next mayor of NYC.

Also it was cool this week to step back and see everybody at the “Wild Style” 30th Anniversary free show in the park by the East River – to see so many people including Lee Quinones, both Ahearn brothers, Cold Crush brothers, Lady Pink, Fab Five Freddy, Futura, Mare 139, Jane Dickson, Lisa Lee, Patti Astor, Joe Conzo, Martha Cooper, among others – and Busy B, who reminded us that the early days of hip-hop were about “peace, love, unity, and having fun”. Yeah, we’re on board for more of that.

Stay tuned this month for exclusive BSA coverage of Nuart ’13 in Stavanger, Urban Forms in Lodz, Faile at the Dallas Contemporary, a number of new gallery shows with the new crop of artists on display, and even a chance for BSA to meet you in Bushwick at a special event on the 19th, wink wink.

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week including Amanda Wong, Bunny M, Case Maclaim, Dede, Droid 907, Freddie 111 Street, Gilf!, Josh McCutchen, Judith Supine, Meer sau, Phetus, Phlegm, PRVRT, r1, Reme821, SARZTKG, and Vexta.

“The piece is made of reclaimed plastic bottles that were assembled in a large wire mesh,” says South African installation artist r1, who created this piece in a way that reminded us of the El Anatsui show this year at the Brooklyn Museum and on the Highline.  “Community and street art seems to work well together,” r1 says when recalling the spontaneously posing kids who arrived to get in the picture.

NY weather remains cold/rainy/crappy on the streets still but we actually saw a Street Art tour guide plodding through Williamsburg yesterday pointing out Os Gemeos, El Sol 25, Mr. Toll, and COST paste-ups and telling stories about “beefs” to a handful of cellphone snapping Street Art fans, so Spring must be coming!

By the way, in case you were interested, “The Splasher” identity apparently applies to anyone who splashes paint anywhere today. Remember that dude who was the first “Splasher” and who enlivened many a PBR cocktail party conversation in the late two thousandzies? Remember the outraged manifestos about Street Art years ago – weren’t those wheat-pasted with shards of broken glass? Did he move on to other things? Teaching art therapy? Training sea lions? People magazine should do a “where are they now” story about “The Splasher” right?

Here’s our weekly interview of the street, this week featuring Bast, Blacksheep, Centrifuge, Daan, FRYMS, Hellbent, JM, Joe Iurato, Matthew Deston Burrows, Meer Sau, ND’A, Olek, Saane, Skount, and Young and Sick.

A lot of advertisers have used QR codes on the street to guide you to more “content” if you simply scan them off the poster or billboard with your cellphone. That’s exactly where Street Artist Meer Sau hopes to meet people in this new conceptual piece on the street that ponders how everyday life is completely infiltrated by digital, and how it’s winning our attention from the physical. “I often catch myself walking around and just looking at my f-ing smartphone, checking office mails, typing text messages or just seeing what´s new…instead of keeping my eyes open for the real world – the weather, the people around me, nature …  simply everything,” explains Sau.

“But when I raise my eyes I just see everyone else is doing the same thing – especially the youth – Sitting next to each other, not talking to each other, but using Facebook to contact each other. They are hunting “likes” and judging their friends by their popularity on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and so on. I’m interested in seeing how far this is gonna go. Actually, I don´t wanna know.” – Meer Sau

Images of the Week: 02.17.13

Guess it shouldn’t surprise us when we find out that the sticker, wheat-paste, or mural we published of “Street Art” or graffiti actually turns out to be a logo or promotion for someone who is selling sneakers, t-shirts, lip-gloss, tampons, or toe fungus spray. That’s how people pay the rent, yo!

After all, we get press releases all the time from “Street Artists” who purport to get up all over the place in their home city of New Jesusville – but nobody we talk to has heard of them. Eventually word gets around and its not our business to trash people. And we all know at least one or two fine artists who have used the strategy of putting their stuff on the street to add some sort of “cred” to their “brand”. Fine. And look at the countless corporate names that have been inserting (or “integrating”) themselves into all manner of social/electronic media and “stories” in the last couple of years – just to leach off grassroots D.I.Y. culture and make the money and get the clicks but not actually support the art community that birthed it. It’s a complex story.

But it’s hard not to feel a little bit like you just got punked when you walk into a store and find the stuff you shot in a putrid garbage strewn alley is now silk-screened across a cheap flask or frisbee or truckers cap, giving it about as much meaning as a Kardashian wedding ring.

What are we going to do? Oh probably nothing – there is no purity test or reliable scale for measuring when someone has “sold out” and we don’t like pompous peeps who pretend otherwise. We’re just keeping an eye out, sister, and trying not to get fooled again.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Alinic, ASK, BAMN, Chris & Veng RWK, Gilf!, Icy & Sot, Lambros, Meer Sau, Mosstika, MUDA, Pixote, Tripel, and WD.

Images of The Week 10.21.12

A lot of action on the street right now – people are in organized events, on commissioned walls and doing their own personal thang too.  Here’s our weekly interview with the street featuring Bast, Chris and Veng from Robots Will Kill, ECB, Faile, Jaye Moon, Jetsonorama, JM, Judith Supine, Meer Sau, Mr. Toll, ND’A, NoseGo, See One, and Stik.

Rhiannon was rejoicing on Friday night because she said she had not seen a live new Judith Supine since she moved to New York, so that’s cool. People have been texting and tweeting us about it since it appeared – it’s like it should have been accompanied by a chorus and some trumpets or something. Ladies and Gentlemen, Judith Supine. Jaye Moon has a gallery show right now with her other fine art called “Breaking the Code”. We can’t figure out what is says though. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Faile visited Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia recently and left a series of works. Street Artist Blanco is in Mongolia serving two years in the AmeriCorps and sent this photo in exclusive to BSA. Clearly it is a collaboration, and there are supposed to be more nearby. Anyone going to Ulaan Baatar soon? (photo © BLANCO)

The Brooklyn Shelflife Project by Showpaper created for BAMArts 2012 and curated by Andrew H. Shirley included five sculptures that will serve as “kiosks” for Showpaper. Finally three of the pieces, shown above, were installed outside the Brooklyn Academy of Music as they were originally intended. From left to right: Swoon and Ryan Doyle, Leon Reid IV and Noah Sparkes, Cassius Fouler and Faust. Click here to see our coverage of this show as it was being installed back in June.
