Seeing these new El Sol 25 collaged figures and Stephen Powers’ new ironically worded signs posted around the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum may have given us a sense of irrational optimism this week. It also could have been the 75 degree Wednesday afternoon, the birds singing through open apartment windows in the morning or the two-for-one bagels at Hamid’s deli.

Whatever it was, lets keep this springy buzz going a minute. Can we please skip the presidential race for a couple of days please?

Now we’re in the thick of it – summer murals and independent interventions all. Regardless of technique, experience or background, artists of all stripes are bringing new works on walls across the city, including our top image this week which is by someone new to the street, Turkish fine artist, painter, designer Anil Duran in Bushwick. Labels (Street Art, graffiti, urban art, murals) can be helpful to categorize, but let’s drop them this week and call it art, and see if it applies.

“Welling Court” 2014, a Grassroots Mural Event Turns 5 in Queens

When the revered graffiti holy place named 5Pointz in Queens, New York was buffed and slated officially for demolition last fall the collective response of the graffiti / Street Art fan base and community was horror and lament. Nonetheless, community persists, and art in the streets is stronger than ever in many cities, including right here in Queens which has played host to an ever growing grassroots exhibition on the walls for five years called Welling Court.

Imagined and produced by two advocates of creativity in the public sphere and run on a shoe-string budget, Welling Court is a series of 100+ walls throughout this largely working class neighborhood that feels like it perhaps has been overlooked by the rest of the city. With a mix of some of New York’s newest immigrants and families, the modest residential/light manufacturing neighborhood has had a eye-jolting injection of spirit and free art every summer since 2009.

We look forward to this annual event for a number of reasons, among them: the unpretentious spirit of community creativity at work as tens of artist straddle ladders and stepstools side by side painting walls, the friendly inquisitive neighbors who hang out and discuss the art and prepare a variety of foods to share on folding tables in the middle of the street, and the unbridled enthusiasm of the kids who race through the neighborhood on foot, bicycle, scooter, even grocery cart.

Unsponsored by brands and run by community elbow grease, Welling Court brings lots of Street Art / graffiti / public art enthusiasts and almost no police presence or crime for that matter. Breaking their own record this June at 127 painted walls, organizers Garrison and Alison Buxton help hook up the opportunity and artists are happy to take advantage of it. Here is just a relatively small selection of images taken by photographer Jaime Rojo at Welling Court 2014.

We’ve seen a lot of fat cats, but never one this big. French Street Artist C215 finished it this week on a wall in the 13th arrondissment of Paris. Demian Smith, founder of Underground Paris, says the chat géant is “part of the neighborhood’s strategy to create an alternative tourism industry in this pretty ugly, working class area in the south of Paris.” – Not the first time that Street Artists have perked a place up, just usually not on this scale. The strategy has so far included murals by Shepard Fairey, Inti, and Vhils, he says. Special thanks to Théo David for sharing these exclusive shots for BSA readers.

Sanpaku gan (三白眼) or Sanpaku (三白) is a Japanese term that means “three whites” and is generally referred to in English as “Sanpaku eyes”. The term refers to the iris being rather small, so that it only covers about two-thirds or less of the vertical axis of the eye; e.g. delineate an eye into four portions; the iris would only occupy one portion of the divided four sections; thus leaving the other three in white, hence “three whites”.

When the bottom of the white part of the eye, known as the sclera, is visible it is referred to as ‘Yin Sanpaku’ in Chinese lore. According to the myth, it represents physical imbalance in the body and is claimed to be present in alcoholics, drug addicts and people who over consume sugar or grain. Conversely when the upper sclera is visible this is called ‘Yang Sanpaku’. This is said to be an indication of mental imbalance in people such as psychotics, murderers, and anyone rageful. Stress and fatigue may also be a cause.^[1]

In August 1963, macrobiotic pioneer George Ohsawa predicted that President John F. Kennedy would experience great danger because of his sanpaku condition. This was reported by Tom Wolfe in the New York Herald Tribune.^[2]

People with sanpaku eyes may also be feared to be prone to violent or disordered behaviors.^{[citation needed]} There is no evidence for this belief, however.

John Lennon mentioned sanpaku in his song “Aisumasen (I’m Sorry)” from the 1973 Mind Games album. It is also briefly referenced in William Gibson’s Neuromancer, as well as in Michael Franks‘ 1979 song “Sanpaku”, and in The Firesign Theatre‘s piece “Temporarily Humboldt County”.

Joseph Meloy Presents: “Vandal Expressionism,” Art Show At Tom & Jerrry’s (Manhattan, NY)

Vandal Expressionism

NYC-based artist Joseph Meloy returns this November with a second helping of Vandal Expressionism, a paint-first-ask-questions-later approach to communicating through art.Dancing over the line between the abstract and the figurative, this graffiti-inflected collection continues to delve into the unconscious, pouring it out onto canvas and paper in an otherworldly yet distinctly urban visual language.

The exhibit will be up for the entire month of November, so even if you can’t make the opening soiree, fear not because you can go check it out later in the month…

But we do hope you can join us on

Joseph Meloy, “Exactly What The Hell is Vandal Expressionism?”

The debut solo exhibition of NYC-based artist Joseph Meloy.

A hieroglyphic graffiti-inflected take on the spirit of abstract expressionism, Vandal Expressionism is a veritable child of New York City, drawing as much from the Abstract Expressionists of the 1940’s and 50’s as from the hordes of graffiti taggers whose scribbles and scrawls wallpaper our streets.

The media is mixed, and the message might not be entirely apparent, but it’s this inkblot test ambiguity that makes Vandal Expressionism a trip to explore…
