London Walls in Conjunction with Saatchi “XX: A Moment in Time”

New murals today in London in conjunction with the Olly Walker curated “XX: A Moment in Time” show at Saatchi Gallery, which is now running until March 6. The all-female show highlights the depth of field that has emerged during these last few years with formally trained artists of many disciplines explanding the definitions of contemporary art and Street Art.

Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

Now screening :

1. Roma Street Art Tribes as Captured by Dioniso Punk

bsa-film-friday-special-feature

BSA Special Feature: Roma Street Art Tribes as Captured by Dioniso Punk

Gwen Stacy Parts I and II

Disorderly, discordant, and richly chaotic, these two videos are centered around the Italian street art paintings and artists whom you will recognize from our earlier postings on community/gallery organized urban art programming – but within the context of historical art publicly displayed, peoples movements, patronage, fascism, the classics.

Dioniso Punk allows everyone to talk – neighbors, artists, organizers, curators, public philosophers, elected officials, psychologists, sociologists, entrepreneurs, posers, professors, historians, students, an opera singer, the petite bourgeoisie, international visitors and hapless puzzled opinionated locals.

Discussions at panels cut into impassioned discussions by senior women in the courtyard or didactic examinations in the street – some for illustration, others for whimsy, none to be ignored. More of a fact finding mission than cogent analysis, you may find it difficult to follow the narrative and so it is better to let go and allow yourself be battered by the insights and observations delivered with the jumpy cuts and uncompleted thoughts and discussions, preferring instead to sink into the tribe of the humans, here selectively displayed for your pleasure and hopefully, edification.

(turn on the CC (closed captioning) if you do not speak Italian)

Featuring interviews with Solo, Gaia, Diamond 0707, Maupal, Best Ever, Bol23, Jerico, Guerrilla Spam Sen One, Sabrina, Dan, Stefano Antonelli (999 Contemporary,) Marta Ugolini (Galleria Ca’ D’Oro), Agathe Jaubourg (Pasolini Pigneto), Alìn Costache (YUT!), Edoardo Martino (Villaggio Globale), and Eleonora Zaccagnino (Acid Drop).

Special Guests: Mp5, Alice Pasquini, Mr. Thoms, Jessica Stewart, Sandro Fiorentini (La Bottega del Marmoraro).

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

Apparently there is another spectacular sporting event that’s got everyone captivated today and for a couple hours it will be easy to get a cronut or a seat on the subway because people will be worshipping flat screens inside a dark sports bar on the Lord’s Day. We recommend you jog right over to the High Line because it’s free and will likely be a little more commodious than usual. You can lounge while listening to a sleek waterfall, stroll arm in arm with your beloved, gaze upon the urban-wild landscaping and even catch a new billboard high-jacking that might make you crack a  smile.

The billboard space is great if reserved for Art On The High Line, but has been recently replaced by straight up garishly banal advertising, sort of marring the beauty of this big public works project whose spirit is better served when it steers clear of commercial messaging. This week sometime a few buckets of yellow paint were used to selectively buff the message to create a new one. A bit of genius goes a long way sometimes, doesn’t it? Although, for all we know, it’s a clever way to draw attention to the original ad, since you can still read it.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Alice Pasquini, bunny M, Bust Art, Cera, Damon, Gazoo, Gum Shoe, Kid Monkey, Knarf, Labrona, LMNOPI, Low Bros, Miriam Castillo, Mr. Prvrt, Pyramid Oracle, Sweet Toof, Trentino, UD, Urban Spree, Vexta, Wing, and Zaria.

Alice Pasquini e Una Donna, Memorie Urbane 2014

“I just finished my latest wall in Itri, Italy for the Memorie Urbane Festival,” says Alice Pasquini about her new piece here on BSA.  The engagement with the community is one of the fascinating aspects of public art, and sometimes an artist can be surprised by the comments and conversations sparked by their work – and who they meet on the street.

Inspired by the neo-realist 1960 film ‘La Ciociara’ (Two Women) directed by Vittorio De Sica, the artist creates a portrait of its star, Sophia Loren, which she painted over two days. During that time she really understood the importance of context.

“I was visited by elderly residents of the town, many of whom remember when the filming took place and shared their stories.  One woman, now in her late 80s, had a small role in the film and explained that with the fee she was paid, she was able to support her family of five children,” says Pasquini.

Rub Kandy in the Gallery and in Public in Lichtenburg, Berlin

Rub Kandy in the Gallery and in Public in Lichtenburg, Berlin

The first thing you learn with contemporary, specifically conceptual, art is that it is likely to be accompanied by an artist’s statement. Some times the statement is illustrative and clarifying while other times it may feel like you have fallen into the beige university basement professors’ lounge full of caffeinated academics who are playing a quick game of jargon hackey sack.

Street Artists do not typically provide descriptive prose for their installations.

Rub Kandy is melting the distinction between the street and the gallery further with a new installation in Lichtenberg, a neighborhood in Berlin. Incorporating imagery evoking Berlin’s not so distant past and it’s administration under Soviet authority, Rub Kandy is placing powerful memory-jolting symbols unusually in public space, and letting the associations be determined without providing context.

For those of us living far away from this site, you may check your Wikipedia to further appreciate how electrifying these associations will be for people walking past them when you learn that Lichtenberg was also the site of the extensive headquarters complex of the Stasi, “the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic or GDR, colloquially known as East Germany”.

brooklyn-street-art-rub-kandy-jessica-stewart-berlin-03-14-web-1

Rub Kandy. Berlin, March 2014. (photo courtesy the artist)

A provocatively subtle collaboration between the artist and co-curators Jessica Stewart and Fabio Campagna, the street installations are part of a laboratory of ideas that continue in a gallery setting at Corpo 6 in the same neighborhood. You may feel like Rub Kandy is extending the exhibition into public space, or that the street art practice is merely the other side of the gallery window. Advertisers have been commandeering our common areas for multi-site and multi-platform messaging campaigns for decades, and so have political campaigns. By removing the clear signifiers of the original thinking behind these works, your discovery of these pieces in public will clearly trigger your own interpretations, if rather unclearly.

Thanks to Jessica Stewart for sharing these exclusive images with BSA readers that she says she took while trailing the artist last month.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

It’s been weeks since we had an “Images of the Week” posting with you, due to the end of the year spectacular we presented  for 13 days; a solid cross section of the talented photographers who are documenting this important moment before it passes.

As a collection 13 From 2013 exemplified the unique and eclectic character of Street Art and graffiti photography today. Each person contributed a favorite image and along with it their insight and observations, often personal, very individual, and with a real sense of authenticity. Each day we were sincerely grateful for their contributions to BSA readers and to see the street through their eyes.

Thank you again to Yoav Litvin, Ray Mock, Brock Brake, Martha Cooper, Luna Park, Geoff Hargadon, Jessica Stewart, Jim Kiernan, Bob Anderson, Ryan Oakes, Daniel Albanese, James Prigoff, and Spencer Elzey for 13 from 2013. Also if you missed it, that list kicked off just after our own 2013 BSA Year in Images (and video) were published here and on Huffington Post, all of which was also a great honor to share with you.

And so we bring back to you some documentation of moments before they passed – our weekly interview with the street, this week including $howta, Appleton Pictures, ASVP, BAMN, Chase, Dceve, Doce Freire, EpicUno, Hot Tea, Jerkface, Judith Supine, Leadbelly33, LoveMe, Meres, Olek, Rambo, Ramiro Davaro-Comas, Square, and Swoon.

13 from 2013 : Jessica Stewart “The Roman Nun and the Spray Can”

13shots-from-2013-v7

Happy Holidays to all you stupendous and talented and charming BSA readers! We thank you from the bottom of our socks for your support this year. The best way we can think of to celebrate and commemorate the year as we finish it is to bring you 13 FROM 2013 – Just one favorite image from a Street Art or graffiti photographer that brings a story, a remembrance, an insight or a bit of inspiration to the person who took it. For the last 13 days they will share a gem with all of us as we collectively say goodbye and thank you to ’13.
December-25Brooklyn-Street-Art-Jessica-Stewart-December--2013-photogs-names

If anyone knows Rome’s Street Art scene, it is photographer Jessica Stewart, who has been capturing a side of the city not typically seen since 2008, publishing Street Art, urban decay and more from the Eternal City on her RomePhotoBlog.

With a love of Renaissance and Baroque art as a baseline her eye is trained to see lighting and angles like a painter, and in this heart of Roman Catholicism, she is familiar with the iconic. In 2013, Jessica says she knew the exact moment when she had captured just such an image with her camera.

The Roman Nun and the Spraycan

~Jessica Stewart

So it’s of course incredibly difficult to think of just one photo, but when it really comes down to it, this image is the one that for me was a stand out moment of 2013.  It’s one of those times that as it’s happening, you are internally jumping for joy at the fact that you’re on hand to capture it.

Plus, I really think to myself “in no place but Rome could this happen.”

I think with the whole street art and graffiti movement becoming more commercialized and organized, you can almost forget some of the original joy behind what made you get involved in the first place.  In this case, GraffDream, one of two graffiti shops in the city, was holding it’s 6th anniversary jam in May.  Skeme was in town from NYC for the occasion and already they day was special seeing him get swarmed by young Roman kids dying for an autograph.

As is the norm here, many of the wall spaces are owned by the church and in this case, the wall used for the jam was the side of a Catholic school who agreed for the usage in exchange for a lesson in graffiti for its young students.  We were getting toward the end of the day when two of the sisters came out to collect the ladders and lock up items in the school.

I’m not sure if they were just swept up in the congenial atmosphere of the day or what, but before I know it one of the sisters takes a can and starts to pretend to work on Skeme’s piece!  The look on everyone’s faces was priceless and Skeme lit up like a Christmas tree at the sight of it all.

To capture that moment was priceless and I love this shot for how happy the sister looks with her spray paint.  Only in Rome! You don’t know how many people have asked me, “Is this photo for real?”

Yes, it is, and it is a time like this that makes you fall in love with photographing all over again.

Alice Pasquini In South Asia

Urban and fine artist Alice Pasquini just finished a three week trip through Southeast Asian which took her to Singapore, Yogyakarta, and Ho Chi Minh City and where she called forth her aquamarine palette of thoughtful women to walls in new environments while getting to know the local urban art scene and meeting local artists.

“Sometimes we’re forced to adapt: for instance painting with horrible local spray paints or letting go of our daily habits,” she says as she describes challenging herself to work with new materials and create effects that she liked. “You can create some interesting effects using old spray paint meant for cars.” More challenging for an Italian perhaps was foregoing her habit of daily espresso.

After a week of teaching a mural workshop at LaSalle College of Arts in Singapore, which was organized by the Italian Culture Institute of Singapore, she and photographer Jessica Stewart traveled around Indonesia and Vietnam, “to get some new inspiration and escape a bit to a totally new environment,” says Stewart.

They say it was a very different from their experiences in Europe and North America and yet Pasquini says her search for subcultures that resemble the Street Art and Urban Art environment of the more Western variety. “I was in need of new inspiration,” says Alice, and “what I saw was amazement and admiration for urban art and I was able to encounter growing subcultures”.

Special thanks to Ms. Stewart for sharing these exclusive images of the trip with BSA readers.

Alice Pasquini in Sicily for Emergence Festival

August has been brutally hot in Giardini Naxos in Sicily where Alice Pasquini joined a number of artists like Ericailcane, Oricanoodles, Bastardilla, The London Police Pork*Erya, Diamond, and JBrock for the Emergence Festival. It took a number of days to complete this mural in the heat, but says Jessica Stewart, who provides these exclusive photos for BSA readers, “We somehow survived!” At the end of the series of photographs you can see and hear a description of the project from the artist herself.

In neighboring Taormina, Ms. Pasquni used some the found materials she collected in the port of Giardini Naxos to create new pieces for a show at NN Gallery. In “Di Rotta” she uses found wood and inspiration from Sicily. According to Stewart, some postcards she collected in London also were incorporated into the work. Here are a few in-studio shots of Alice as she prepares.

Street Walls and a Boat Too, Alice Pasquini Paints Around London

Alice Solo and New Video of Group Painting on a Moored Boat

New work from Alice Pasquini in Shoreditch, Sydenham, Camden, and boatside along the River Thames where mud boots are required and someone to hold your ladder is appreciated .

Jessica Stewart shares these images with BSA readers of Alice in distinctly different areas of London, where the responses to the sight of an artist painting on your street vary greatly.

In Shoreditch, Alice was taken rather as part of the expected show, says Jessica. “Shoreditch is the hub of Street Art and Alice got everything from random reporters to a guide who does street art tours walking by,” says Jessica. The fellas in the spot next door seem particularly unimpressed of the lady on the ladder as they discuss the news of the day.

In Sydenham, a neighborhood that is newly embracing art to illustrate its vibrancy, the response was welcoming. “In Camden, which funnily enough doesn’t get painted much, people were much more fresh in their observations and really excited to see something go up,” observes Stewart.

Then in the muddy moorings of a dry dock barge in Bermondsey, just up river from Tower Bridge, Alice worked alongside Miss Van, Ciro Schu, Sheryo, and The Yok painting on the side of a boat while the water raised and receded and at times the artists felt like they might get sucked into the earth and the water.

“It was a crazy few days of racing against the tides to get in painting time,” says the photographer as she recalls the hotly humid air and continuously changing conditions.  In the video of the boat painting party below that was shot and edited by Ben Grubb, it’s good to see Alice alongside the others even while the water rises.

“I let myself be inspired by the times when I paint during the night and I imagined a city submerged in sleep,” she says as she describes the inspiration for the new work on view through August 30, and you can see the subdued acquatic hues of a murky underwater metropolis as the fluid movements of this citizenry move silently through a maze of streets.

Alice Pasquini in Ithaca, NY

Ithaca, near the geographical center of New York State, is a socially progressive town that has experimented with its own currency (“Ithaca Hours”), was one of the first cities in the US to confer rights to same-sex partners (1986), and is the home of two universities (Cornell University and Ithaca College).  At the southern end of one of the Finger Lakes (Cayuga, 38 miles long), it’s a nice bastion of natural beauty and lack of attitude, and increasingly, is host to international graffiti and Street Artists.

Italian Street Artist Alice Pasquini did a couple of murals 5 hours from NYC last week, and the photographer Jessica Stewart shares them here with BSA readers.

“Alice’s murals in Ithaca were hooked up by Meal from Cap Matches Color. His inventory of old sprays is insane and I had a field day photographing that too,” says Jessica.
