Jeice 2 “La Gran Inundada” In Istanbul

It is always a surprise to find a one-off piece that evidently took hours of work to create, wheat pasted into the public sphere and ready to face the ravages of rain and sun and wind and time on the street. It can be compounded when you discover there is meaningful story behind the piece.

“La Gran Inundada,” an acrylic painting on paper that began as a detailed drawing, is the name of this new piece by Jeice2 that just appeared in Istanbul, Turkey tucked into this arched depression on the street. A portrait of a handful of chummy men of some official station from an earlier age posing formally and proudly before a church and a government building like one that may appear in a schoolbook illustration, until you observe that they are submerged up to their knees on an island, while water rushes wildly around them.

The metaphor rises from Jeice2’s opinions of the state of the economy and politics in his country, and the sentiment is heard in many places right now if you listen to the citizenry. In the case of some thoughtful street art, the message may not be explicit, but it is deliberate.

“The theme of this piece deals with corruption which is overflowing through the political system, flooding everything in my country today,” he says, as he discusses what he sees as an inundation of influential currency that is flowing into the metaphorical town hall behind these guys, a flood that will sweep up the poor and middle class. His advice? “Stay out of the money flooding.”

Images of the Week 09.30.12

This week seemed busy on the streets of New York after LA graff writer Saber started us off on Sunday with a sky-writing campaign that was politically charged arts advocacy and a social media-soaked smackdown of the right wing in the US. From culture-jamming to political commentary to social advocacy, it looks like some Street Artists are getting back their voice in many pieces that are espousing a message. Not all of them of course.

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Bast, Billi Kid, Creepy, Classic, Espo, Home Sick, JB Rock, Jeice 2, Meer Sau, ND’A, Olek, OverUnder, PM AM, Reader, and Ugo Rondinone. Locations include New York, Istanbul, London, Portugal, Sicily, and the Pilbara desert in the Northwest of Australia.

Sevin’s Errline. This ad-bust wins the week. In this case the artist(s) attached his/her /their decomposing, surrealist airplane to a huge vinyl banner that is shilling luxury condos in Manhattan. As he paints the giant 8-shaped snake biting it’s tail, the Italian Street Artist JB Rock explains his new piece this way, “This is a portrait of our modern society and especially of my beautiful but very counterproductive country. “I traveled up to Port Hedland which is an industry Port in the North West of Australia and painted some walls and found objects in the desert as part of a residency with FORM gallery,” says the Perth-based Creepy.

Here is our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Andrzej Urbankski, Dyke, False, Icy & SOT, Indigo, Jeice 2, Karma, Love Me, Nick Walker, Rambo, and Sorta. Somehow we’ve assembled a rather eclectic collection for you that includes some black and white billboard images by Jaime Rojo that are more on the graffiti tip, as well as new images from Baltimore, Berlin and Spain.

Speaking of black and white, we’ve noticed that quite a few artists are limiting their palettes to something more monochromatic lately. Have you noticed that too? It’s also kind of cool to see these new pieces from the Iranian Street Artists Icy and Sot, who have their first solo show coming up shortly in New York.

Jeice2’s Lone Wolf in the Alley

After businesses are closed and respectable families are inside their homes gathered around their electronic devices, you are skulking through the streets in search of adventure. Wait, what was that? You turn back for a second to look through an opening you just passed. At the end of the cobblestone path the glowing eyes of a lone wolf await you in here in Sevilla. He looks kind of cuddly, but he may bite.

Jeice2 Brings 2 Wild Wolves in Gerena, Spain

Jeice 2 checks in the with the animal kingdom as he starts a new series he’ll call “Savage Planet”. The street artist has experimented with a variety of styles on the street over the last year including a bright abstract lined candy corner in Seville and most recently a portrait of William Burroughs.

Here he brings “The Couple” to a supporting bridge pylon – with a natural hand and sketch stroke, the topic and the style may remind you of animal portraiture done by Gaia, Yote, ROA, and more recently Willow in New York. Here in a greener environment that’s more natural than the urban detritus of Brooklyn, it feels more home-like for these two blue eyed beauties.
