BSA Images Of The Week: 10.13.19

Welcome to BSA Images of the Week – and what a week it has been. The Jews have a new year, the daily amNewYork newspaper was closed, Brooklyn is breaking up gambling dens, and some people are still celebrating Columbus Day tomorrow. The streets have so many different voices adding to the visual dialogue, rather unlike the illusion of variety the corporate media presents us regarding geopolitics, democratic institutions, banks, oil, austerity, the world economy as casino, the war industry, the rise of fascism and autocrats generally.

Now that we think of it, all of these topics are directly and indirectly addressed through our Street Art as well.

Hope you are out strolling today in your neighborhood looking for Street Aart, in a park looking at the leaves on the trees, or outside the city in an apple orchard or pumpkin patch. Do anything you can to strike a sense of balance – we all need it!

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this time featuring Alex Face, Buff Monster, Chapter 23, Dan Kitcher, Elyaz, The Pansy Project, Inside Out Project, JR, Michel Velt, N.Dergund, Mishka, Little Ricky, Nass, Rubin415, Shiro, Tar Box, and Winslow World.

JR Debuts on Broadway and You Were the Star on This Stage

In a New York minute, the Curtain Opens and Closes on “Inside Out”

The daily snaking lines of now famous fans occupying a slice of the Times Square footprint had their last chance at the Big Time in NYC as last weeks show rolled to a close, and the large eyeball van rolled away. For days this limited engagement Broadway hit and circus-like attraction helped people in and out of the photo studio to have their portrait captured and possibly plastered directly as Street Art. The Parisian photographer and Street Artist JR, well known for creating large scale black and white installations that engage and celebrate everyday people knew that this high profile image-centric hub would be a draw, but the near-continuous lines must have been a surprise.

Here where Broadway crosses Seventh for five blocks and slow-moving upward-looking people swim in a sea of logos and interactive screens, where actual New Yorkers are outnumbered by tourists, there was something reassuring about the black and white polka dotted nostalgia of an old-timey mobile photo booth that gave Times Square a nostalgic “Guys and Dolls” revival feeling, even as electronic eyes from corporations, federal, state, and city agencies, and your neighbors phone all surveilled every smile, every preen in 2013. For this multi-day installation, many lucky pedestrians were invited to engage in public art and became the star, sometimes with the director of this production walking among them, helping plaster posters and posing for pictures himself.

Pulling themselves away from bright furry full-sized cartoon characters and the Naked Cowboy, multitudes of photo-friendly Millenials lined up for their fifteen minutes and pulled along mom and dad and maybe grandma for a chance to be on the billboards of the Great Broad Way.

And then, in a New York minute, it was gone – another ethereal Street Art moment captured before it disappeared.

Here’s our weekly interview of the street, this week featuring B.D. White, Col Wallnuts, Dan Witz, Greg LaMarche, Jon Hall, Josef Kristofoletti, JR, Mr. Penfold, Mr. Toll, and W.

The inaugural wall from a new program called “The Big Brush” by commercial outdoor advertising company Colossal went up this week in Brooklyn featuring a work by 1980s/90s New York graffiti writer SP One,  who is now better known as collage fine artist Greg LaMarche. The company figures at least tangentially into the street art scene by virtue of the sheer amount of work they provide for a large number of painting artists who create about 300 walls per year, all hand-painted. They even have an apprenticeship program for painters who would like to learn how to do this work. “Big Brush” will be unleashing a slew of new art on walls that are not zoned to be commercial, so they’re actually inching a little closer to Street Art than before.

For his part, LaMarche told us he was pretty blown away as he watched his original small collage go up over the course of a couple of days, painstakingly recreated on this same wall that had the D*Face piece not too long ago – with the view of the Williamsburg Bridge to the right. We can’t wait to see the video that was created, as we hear that some interesting techniques were employed in the shooting.

“Basically it’s a re-creation of a collage I made last year – it was on the cover of a magazine from Paris called Graffiti Art magazine,” said LaMarche as he guided himself up and down in a cherry picker to get shots of his work. “So it’s crazy that it was on the cover of that magazine this spring and now it’s on the side of a building in Brooklyn. The last year or two has been pretty amazing. I’ve painted some large murals myself but to have some of my smaller work, the collage work, realized in this larger format is really incredible.

BSA: The original work was made with all hand-cut small pieces that are glued to canvas, right?
Greg LaMarche: Onto a board, yeah. It’s funny because when we did the ratio calculations – the actual piece is 15″ wide by 20″ tall and the way they set this up the width was actually perfect. These guys are professional and they know what they are doing. And artists like this are a dying breed – it seems like there’s no challenge that they can’t handle.

JR Keeps an Eye on The Williamsburg Bridge

French Street Artist and photographer JR hit a skyward spot last week in Brooklyn with a large watchful eye which looks toward the Williamsburg Bridge that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. An image taken of a member of the Lokota tribe on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, the new installation is part of The Inside Out – Lakota Project that JR began here in New York last year.

Working with a few assistants JR ferried the large prints up and down the building in a cherry picker, carefully matching the seams and wheat-pasting the pieces to gradually reveal this ocular oddity. The finished wall is alongside the north side of the bridge, perfect for bicyclists and pedestrians who want to stop and snap a photo.

Images of the Week 11.13.11: JR’s “Inside Out” Project Special

This week we take you to the scene of a brand new eye-opening JR installation in Manhattan – Seen from the outside and inside.

Street Artist JR continues to plaster parts of New York City with over-sized black and white portraits of Native Americans from North Dakota for his Inside Out Project. The images were taking by photographers in North Dakota and sent to the IOP to be printed and installed in Manhattan.

This newest installation took place this week over two days on four window panels in an empty retail space of a corner building in Chelsea. On the first day JR was on site lending a hand to the half dozen interns who came to help and to learn how to wheat paste in this cool little spot across from the High Line Park on 10 Ave and 19th Street.

A second installation went up on the windows on the 19th Street side of the building, providing a second pair of eyes to surveil the area.  The wind was gusting like a mad mother-in-law and the cold was almost bitter –  but that didn’t put a dent in the enthusiasm of the team made up of Natalie, Paola, Moira, Will, Nina, Nastasia, Rosie, Austin, Hillary, Gina and Rhiannon; Each have interned at either JR’s studio or with the Inside Out Project.  It was cool to see teamwork and good spirits intact promptly at 9:00 am as they set to unroll panels, fight the wind and slap up gallons of gooey wheat paste on the windows. Marc, from JR’s New York Studio was there to give a quick lesson wheat pasting and to oversee the installation.

JR Helps to Turn The Bronx Inside Out

Summertime, and the Street Art is easy. With the assistance of Street Artist JR and his project “Inside Out”, it’s been easier than ever this summer for people of all stripes to take over the public space with their faces and their personal stories. At his offering, thousands of people worldwide have sent photos of themselves digitally and received them back printed to post proudly in their local environs.

Of course street artists like Fauxreel, C215, Swoon, Specter and others have thoughtfully introduced neighbors into the public space with their work also, each with their individual technique, but the scale of this TED-fueled interactive project really impacts many perceptions of people, neighborhoods, and the concept of public space.

“You want LOCAL? I got yer local right heeyah.”

JR recently hit up many New York spots personally and photographer Jaime Rojo chased a number of them up in the Boogie Down Bronx, where everyone seems to be seeing the world with new eyes.
