ROMAN KLONEK & JIM AVIGNON

Speedy Wonderland

Opening Reception FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 7-10pm

Join Factory Fresh on December 10th as we welcome artists Roman Klonek and Jim Avignon and their unusual breed of pop art for their show Speedy Wonderland.

Roman Klonek is a Polish artist who creates figures from woodprints, composed of vibrant colors and seeming to be in constant motion. Influenced by old cartoons from Eastern Europe, Klonek’s figures have a vintage, wide-eyed feel to them, but his predilection for juxtaposing his happy characters against awkward situations (including but not limited to: injuries, arrests, infiltration by monsters) reminds you that his work lives far from the pages of the Sunday morning comics.

Jim Avignon, a German pop artist, designer and musician who creates similarly disarming work with a cartoon feel. Avignon currently calls both Williamsburg and Germany home, and began his career as an artist painting the walls of clubs in places like Munich and Berlin. As a result of this heritage, his work is inherently urban- his figures are crowded and sometimes exhausted, but always lively and surprising, lurking in and wandering around the canvas. If Avignon’s work were a show on the Cartoon Network, it wouldn’t be the one you wanted your children to see but the one you yourself were enthralled by, following the tired eyes and furrowed expressions of animations that stray far from realism yet furrow their brow in an uncannily familiar manner. His work is a garish caricature of the self that’s hard to keep your eyes off of- it’s no wonder his designs have appeared everywhere from Swatches and sweatshirts to the tails of airplanes.

Klonek and Avignon will be collaborating on some pieces but working mostly separately.

The show opens December 10th at 7 pm, and runs until January 16th. Don’t miss it.

Factory Fresh is located at 1053 Flushing Avenue between Morgan and Knickerbocker, off the L train Morgan Stop

Opening Reception Friday, September 24th from 7pm-10pm

On September 24th, Factory Fresh enters a dreamlike state hosting the unusual art of Jeremiah Maddock, Daniel Trocchio and Amanda Wong.

Brooklyn-based artist Jeremiah Maddock specializes in the hypnotic. His lack of traditional practices, both in his artistic process and his choice of canvas, makes for an intriguing body of work. Devoid of any subscribed intention, Maddock’s art is a trip into the subconscious, where the doodles and absent-minded patterns come alive to form diverse work. His drawings range from sketchy pieces to claustrophobic works that hum with repeated figures against their tarnished frames. Maddock’s inclination towards working on dilapidated materials like stained wood and burnt paper creates a haze of antiquity within which the fruits of his imagination play. His subjects- robots, white faced strangers, and unidentifiable animals- are entrancing but never definable, ringing with an eerie note of nostalgia but skirting any fully formed identity.

Maddock’s work will be complimented by Daniel Trocchio, whose curious and vibrant pieces will not rouse you from this show’s enigmatic dream, and Amanda Wong, who will be creating an installation in collaboration with Maddock featuring video, sound scapes and paintings. All these artists share a desire for a concept to reveal itself through the process of making. Perhaps only to reveal the characters lurking in the basements of our minds.

Join us at Factory Fresh on September 24th for an examination of the unknown.

Factory Fresh Gallery Presents: “Among Darkened Woods” A Group Show

Appropriating an image from the opening lines of Dante’s Inferno as visual and thematic source material for the exhibit, the artists in Among Darkened Woods present works that seek to represent the derivative potential of darkness, to probe the obscure, to lend plasticity to shadows and other forms evanescent, to perceive presences and apparitions in that which seems to have disappeared.

While Dante’s infernal quest leads him from the selva oscura of life’s proper path gone astray, as it were, to visions of the most profound reaches of physical suffering, punishment and ceaseless decay, the works here suggest an earlier stopping point, a less hellish locus, a place perhaps only subtly subterranean where forms have not yet dropped into the abyss of a falling apart, evoking instead the ordered calm of a falling away.

Featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed-media works by Tim Kent,
SHM Kim, Adam Collison, Amanda Nedham, Mary Kate Maher, Monika Zarzeczna
and Paul D’Agostino, and featuring an essay accompaniment by Paul D’Agostino.

Petes Candy store – 709 Lorimer street

The dynamic and delightful duo reunite and return for a very special performance at Brooklyn’s much loved live music haunt Pete’s Candy Store.

Adorned by their revered hand painted stage dressing, Anxieteam (Jim Avignon and Jon Burgerman) will whisk you away to a land of doe-eyed maidens of tea and carnivorous video game characters. Swooning strums of the ukulele, lacquered in lament and wistfulness, will be charged with the electronic prong of sounds from the dawn of the digital age.

The intimate set will touch upon the key universal themes of the Anxieteam oeuvre; buffets and best-friends, relationships and spaceships, cakes and cats, and of course, salads and ballads.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own salad items to the event to contribute to a communal salad to made by the band during the event.
