BSA Special Feature: Chump for Trump. Ron English x The Sutcliffes

Seeing the new Ron English mural of Donald Trump in Bushwick, Brooklyn last week we were reminded of the video he released in April with a soundtrack by The Sutcliffes, a Beatles tribute band. It uses footage from Trump rallies and commercials interspersed with illustration and animation in an approachable folky way. Once you go down the rabbit hole of Trump satire and parody videos that have been made in the last year, you’ll find enough to begin a film festival.

100 Persianas by MVIN

A few months ago eL Seed created a multi building mural in Cairo that can only be seen in toto from a specific physical vantage point. Here is a similar project where the only way to appreciate a tag in Barcelona from MVIN is to assemble a grid of photos from 100 pull-down gates (persianas) he painted.

Street Heroines by Alexandra Henry

BSA has supported many great Kickstarters and this is one that we are truly excited about. Of course we’ve brought you work from many of the women whom Ms. Henry is including in this documentary, but there are faces we haven’t seen before and people whose stories haven’t been told.

She’s almost done filming but the project needs your help and we urge you to help get her over the finish line!

Also, Post-It Wars in corporate agency-land Manhattan.

DAZE completed this wall for Coney Art Walls 2016. Included in the composition of this mural is the Elephant Hotel, a seven story, 31 room fantasy hotel built in old Coney Island in 1885 shaped like an elephant. Besides the guest rooms the structure also boasted an observatory, a gift shop and a concert hall before it burned down in 1896. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

According to New York Magazine the Post-it “artists” took their craftsmanship to new heights after someone installed a simple “hi” message on the window of one of the two buildings facing each other on Canal Street. After one week the “war” is in full effect with several messages directed at each other offices ranging from “Will you marry me” to songs’ lyrics and other pleasantries and pop references. The two buildings are known for housing several ad agencies, Getty images and New York Magazine.

BSA Special Feature:VHILS: Debris in Hong Kong . NOWNESS

Vhils has made a high quality short movie based in Hong Kong that asks many of the existential questions of workers in the developed world in 2016. Crisply told with an attenuated attention level, VHILS walks you through his creative endeavors while revealing the conflicting feeling that accompany the frequently soulless existence of a capitalist race. The tightly clapping soundtrack is also soulfully sexy, the layers are blasted away with punishing style, and there is plenty of debris.

Eye candy for the animation set, you may never toss your clothes on the floor thoughtlessly again. There is a story line here, but you may lose it while marveling at the creativity flying around the room.

A simple homemade video of 108 + Eleuro going out to the country to paint a wall in an abandoned factory space. The atonal soundtrack makes you think that something profound or frightening will happen, but its just a couple of friends painting.

Pøbel took a walk down Hollywood Boulevard to make a political statement in Donald Trump’s star. The valley girls took one second to look up from their phones and like oh my god surreeusslaay they like so freaked out I am not even kidding.

The unreality TV version of the US political race is simplifying and degrading the discussions that candidates are having during this election cycle. If you ask the Republican frontrunner what the race is about he’ll reduce it down to a contest of winners and losers.

Artist Vicki da Silva would agree.

The artist did her own ode to The Donald in front of his 40 Wall Street building in New York to illustrate her sentiment.

“Since Trump has a nasty habit of calling people losers, it was my way of putting it back on him using his name and logo,” she says. With the new piece she reminds us of the corrosive court jester’s daily attacks on any person or class of persons who do not agree with him on any number of issues.

DaSilva points to comments made a few weeks ago in the run-up to the primaries in his state by former New Hampshire Republican governor John Sununu that call into question the myriad Trump stump speeches crowing about the real estate mogul’s head-spinning winning.

“I pointed out that he’s been a loser all his life. He’s had four big bankruptcies. Trump Airlines went bankrupt, Trump Magazines shut down, Trump Steaks went out of business, and when he was the owner of New Jersey Generals, they also went out business. This guy has a history of failure and losing. He’s a perpetual loser,” say Sununu in an ABC.com article.

Says DaSilva “The entire Republican Party is a loser party, now more than ever, in my opinion.”

To get the shot the artist is photographer, set director, and performer. DaSilva positions a still camera on a tripod to record the movement of the lamp as she writes the text during a single-frame time exposure photograph. Important to the process is that she uses no post editing or digital alteration of the still photograph. She refers to the work as “light graffiti” and she makes prints of it to exhibit and sell.

Truthfully, she says she’d love to wheat-paste a huge version of this one on a wall somewhere. Any takers?

Rounding out the Thanksgiving week here as people think back on what they have to be thankful for in New York and across the US. Despite the class war on the poor, near-weekly proof of systematic racism and extremism, gun violence that feels out of control, and 3 songs on the top ten by Justin Beiber, we have to admit that all is not lost – and we still have a pretty strong union of cool people who actually love our neighbors and multi-cultures and are willing to show it every day.

The art we see in the streets continues to evolve; People like Gilf! are combining experimentation and activism in the public sphere while others are looking for ways to address a variety of social/political ills, – meanwhile many artists now seek and secure legal spots to put up their work, use hash tags and Instagram as marketing directly to collectors, advertisers are mimicking street art to promote brands, and Wynwood in Miami is preparing to showcase some of the flashiest displays of sponsored murals and participants yet during Basel next week.

There is a rising chorus of horrified detractors who say an organic grassroots art form is being commodified. It’s not political enough! It’s narcissistic! It’s all privileged white kids who don’t appreciate the true roots of graff culture! Calm down everybody, we can handle this. There is room for all ya’ll, like they say down south.

Dude, Dudette, this is the moment to make the most of Summer before it in subsumed into crazy New York fall. There is so much art on the streets you may not even want to go inside. Actually, if you haven’t seen the China: Through the Looking Glass at the Metropolitan Museum, you have to go – it could blow your mind with all the video and costume and power and history and modern western interpretations of it, sho nuff.

Right now Street Artists are beginning to take into account a large pimple on the butt of the US, Mr. Donald Trump. Of course the streets always render opinions in such clever and pointed ways – helping us to cope with a corporate media infotainment machine that can’t help but chase a fire and pour gasoline on it for ratings. Actually NemO’s new mural of a man caught inside a TV-as-guillotine is also apropo.
