Welcome to BSA Images of the Week.

First day of August, and although the city is gorgeous and green and full of summer excitement, the news is pulsing with the Delta variant, our lost war in Afghanistan, half a million New Yorkers unable to pay the rent, soaring home prices… and Jerome Powell announcing gently that inflation could be ‘higher and more persistent’ than expectations. Whose expectations, Mr. Money Printer?

If you look at the surreal quality of the art on the streets these days, you may be forgiven for feeling like you are living in a funhouse. Perhaps it’s because we’re in a sea of disinformation, the populace is adrift, oddly ready to be galvanized amidst our myths and our realities. It’s everywhere you look, including in our Street Art.

Happy Easter, fool.

JK it’s also April Fools Day but we know you are no fool amiright?

This week we are going all graffiti for our Images of the Week section, and most of it is on Brooklyn roofs. So we’re giving a high five to tulips, daffodils, forsythia, hyacinths, ducklings, robins singing, Sunday dinner with your moms or pops, the hat parade on 5th Avenue, chocolate rabbits, and graffiti pieces on the roof. Here’s hoping for warm weather, a new colorful season, and excitement coming back to the streets of the city.

We ran into BSA contributor Stephen Kelley on the streets of Brooklyn and he informed us of his impending move for greener pastures and bigger dwellings to accommodate the yet to arrive new member of the family (congratulations buddy). At the same time we invited us to his rooftop where he has been hosting writers, locals and forefingers to get up on the perfect canvases that are the squares that house the rooftop staircase exit. We hereby dedicate today’s Images Of The Week to the graff writers….STEVE keep waxing poetic…

BSA Special Feature: We Don’t Need More Rats: The Clandestine White-washing of 5Pointz

Hard to believe it has been a year since 5Pointz was buffed, and yet the shock to many has gradually sunk in. Almost a year to the day, we give you this personal remembrance through the eyes of a hometown filmmaker named P. J. Monsanto. With interviews with a few of the artists who had a close association with the graffiti holy place and some helpful backgrounding detail, Monsanto gives you a sense of the shock many felt the morning after the white-wash. Big Ups to P.J. for putting together this piece of New York’s collective history.

Distort takes his time on this roof burner captured on a sunny afternoon in New Jersey by Element Tree and Art Primo.

 

HOT TEA “UUGGHH”

You saw it first here! Hot Tea shares with BSA his latest installation and his commentary on the loss of an iconic building for that renegade brand of painting that New York is known for. This family owned building on Bowery and Spring in Soho that is one of the last spots in Manhattan for graff and Street Artists to hit up has been sold – for millions. For most Street Artists the allure of Manhattan has long since died, but every last bite of the Gentrification Monster has been a moment to pause, to consider the mall-ification of a vibrant downtown culture and a city once full of wild wonder and to say, “UUGGHH”.

José Parlá: Nature Of Language

A great new video of José Parlá as he creates a site-specific mural for a modern library in North Carolina. You can get a real sense of the gestural mark making process as well as his thoughts and intentions while building this wall full of character.

Here is a brief description directly from the artist “Although illegible at first sight, the juxtaposed characters, gestures, hieroglyphs, and words become readable through feeling, as it is my hope that the work evokes the language of your own inner voice – of your own history. In an era when technology is taking over as the driving force of communication, art reminds us of our roots and our need for face-to-face communication. This Nature is our mirror, as art allows this bridge to be possible through the language of calligraphy, I pay homage to this Nature and the history of languages, which are the mirrors of our present condition.”

Eno and Shida in New Zealand

Using only rollers and brushes these two fellas from the north island of New Zealand show off a quick collection of their recent murals together behind a soundtrack by Whanganui local music celeb Jack Michell-Anyon. Choice, bro!

The Hours present “Neon Golden” in Hong Kong

An unusual visitors diary of a group trip to Hong Kong, via the streets and the tunnels and the gallery. In September the Australian based creative group The Hours had a show at Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong’s Central and Western District entitled ‘Neon Golden’. With peeps from graffiti, street art, and the contemporary art world, the video shows a coalescing of interests and skills and a few thrill-seeking scenes like being suspended from the roof and relying on a harness to paint. Aside from the painting scenes the video provides an open window into modern day Hong Kong – full of cranes and high rises and traffic and character.

From the Vimeo page, the artists included are Fintan Magee, Shida, Rone, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Beastman, Yok, Sheryo, Numskull, Vans The Omega, Roach, Phibs, Twoone, Jumbo and Thomas Jackson.

ATEK84 Transforms Fast Food Joint into Church of TV

Street Artist Atek84 wins the award for best concept by staging this full immersion public installation/renovation of a junk food joint into a church where junk television is worshipped 24/7. He says it is a “modern church” where the philosophy that TV is the new god. Over the period of months he slowly transformed the property in his hometown in Belgium into a high profile critique of the power of the almighty television on the perceptions and behaviors of society – especially the degrading effect that junk television has on our minds and spirits. To drive home his message of the omnipotence of the big screen, he created an installation on a wall about 9 meters high with a real working flatscreen TV on it, playing day and night.

XAM – Urban Habitat Project

A new video follows Street Artist XAM through his process for imagining, creating, and installing his new campaign of homes for birds in Lower Manhattan.

KLUB7 painting Strangeways:

A minimalist modern monochromatic sketch on shape, texture, and touch from KLUB7 as they paint clear glass and the camera plays with light, shadow, and environmental factors. It’s far more visually stimulating to watch than for us to describe.

Element Three: No Mercy In The Heart Of A Wolf

Return with us now to the joys of the neighborhood wall. This New Jersey crew suffered some dissing of their previous piece that featured the bare breasts of a woman in it’s metaphorical representation and despite numerous repairs to their work, ultimately had to abandon the composition because of one dork in the neighborhood who kept protesting the horrible breasts. From the ashes of their collective disappointment, the team decided to use it as inspiration to created something else and come back and wreck the wall. This video is a record of the creation of the new piece “No Mercy in the Heart of a Wolf”.

Language alert – the first musical accompaniment contains vulgarity that may offend some of the kiddies.

 

Articulate Baltimore by Stefan Ways

A thoughtful retracing of certain elements and textural emotions in the making of murals for Articulate Baltimore, a district improvement mural program that featured the work of peeps like Pixel Pancho and locals Billy Mode and his homeboy Chris Stain, and of course head of the ship Stefan Ways, among others.  Articulate Baltimore is also co-founded by Jesse James.

Lister “Unsung Heroes” (LNDN/New Castle)

Anthony Lister’s two shows at The Outsiders Gallery titled “Unslung Heroes” are taking place simultaneously at The Outsiders London and New Castle outlets at the same time. “I try to combine the highbrow and lowbrow,” says Lister, “creating analogies which allow the viewer to feel comfortable with subjects that maybe they’ve made snap judgements on before.”

Abe Lincoln Jr., Robbie Busch “Split Seven” (BK)

Split Seven is a fictitious rock n’ roll experience with both artists producing fabricated albums from invented Punk Rock and Heavy Metal bands. Abe Lincoln Jr. and Robbie Busch show  “Split Seven” opens tonight at Mighty Tanaka Gallery in Brooklyn.

Portraiture Group Show in Bushwick tonight (BK)

At the Low Brow Artique Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn artists Rachel Hayes, Jilly Ballistic, Vahge, and Vexta explore the discipline of portraiture with their group exhibition “Rewriting Portraiture” opening today. “Typically the subject of paintings throughout art history, Rewriting Portraiture establishes how those who are the object of desire visually depict their realities.”

Silent Soho Auction For Boardwalks in Coney and Rockaways Saturday

“Bring Back The Boardwalks” is a silent auction with 100% of the proceeds going to the reconstruction of the severely damaged communities of Coney Island and The Rockaways.
