BSA Images Of The Week 09.02.18 – Artmossphere Biennale 2018

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

It’s been a packed couple of weeks between traveling to Moscow for the Artmossphere Biennale 2018 and immediately hopping to Leipzig, Germany for the magnificent Monumenta opening. Our heads are full of stories and conversations and images in two distinctly different scenes that somehow are still completely connected. Can’t tell if its euphoria or relief or jetlag but this Sunday is a dizzying day of taking account and being really thankful to be involved with an astounding amount of talent and camaraderie in the Graffiti/Street Art/Urban Art community that is connecting people around the world.

Here are our images of the week this time around; some selections from the Thursday night Artmossphere Biennale 2018 in Moscow, featuring 108, 1UP, Adele Renault, Bill Posters, BLOT, Canemorto, CT, the DOMA Collective, Egs, Faith XLVII, Faust, Finsta, Hyland Mather, LOT, Lucy McLauchlan, Lyall Sprong, Martha Cooper, Pablo Harymbat, and Pink Power.

BSA Special Feature: Icy & Sot “Plastic Shells”

Demonstrating once again that when you are an artist the world is your oyster for creativity, Street Artists Icy & Sot play on a popular folk myth that if you hold a seashell to your ear, usually a conch shell, you will hear the sound of the ocean. The rush and the resonance of swelling and crashing waves upon the sand is captured and forever transmitted by the open cavity of the seashell. In this small conceptual video piece the brothers take you to the beach with a new friend to gather seashells and hold them up to your ear.

New Yorker’s can see a new piece by Icy & Sot that one of them in their studio modeled on BSA a couple of weeks ago tonight in a group show by curators Victoria Latysheva and Melissa McCaig-Welles, as they  present “Trumpomania”. It’s all mixed media from artists in 35 countries, ruminating on you-know-who.

NWO 3 – ABIK “Gestural”

20+ years of graffiti under his belt, Abik is getting abstract.

It’s third in a series of programs he has led and this one will feature work by many of the next generation who are coming to the streets and canvasses with alternatives to the figurative as well as the wild style – sort of a “no wave” approach to walls.

“The name of the event – NWO as New WALL Order – plays with the illuminati & conspiracy theories’ tagging to ironically highlight new horizons of our post-graffiti scene via the signature-wallpaintings,” says Marco Contardi, an Italian free writer and curator.

Previous editions of NWO included artists like 108, 2501, Giorgio Bartocci, CT, Eleuro and Ufocinque, as well as then Abik, Alfano, Alberonero, Aris, Giorgio Bartocci, Centina, G.Loois x Domenico Romeo, Luca Font and Sbagliato Collective.

Call it post-graffiti, or graffuturism, but these guys hope you’ll appreciate the gesture.

Faring Purth “As in the Light of Marielle”

Faring Purth “As in the Light of Marielle”

Faring Purth is taking this one lying down in Westville, New Haven Connecticut on a long wall with Marielle. The 150 x 12 foot figure featured in “As in the Light of Marielle” was just completed and feted with an evening celebration that featured light artist Raven Fox, whom Faring says provided “breathtaking illuminations” overlaying her painted figure.

Stretching luxuriously from fingertip to pointed toe along the length of a parking lot in a lushly greened neighborhood, the wall was completed as a result of of Farings’ involvement with a local community arts group, the Westville Village Renaissance Alliance.

Seeing the slumber of Marielle and her heavily lidded eyes, we are reminded of this Shakespeare Sonnet XXVII

“WEARY with toil, I haste me to my bed

The dear repose for limbs with travel tired;

But then begins a journey in my head

To work my mind, when body’s work’s expired:”

Göla Finding Direction with a Deer God for Viavai Project in Italy

Göla Finding Direction with a Deer God for Viavai Project in Italy

By way of re-balancing our chakras today, we check in with Göla and his new mural of the Deer God for the Viavai Project in Salento, Italy.

Along with Street Artists like Pastel, Ozmo, Eversiempre, CT, Basic, and Tellas, the festival takes the position that art in public spaces can shift the center of gravity away from the typical hype of a “scene” and focus instead upon the experiential aspects of art as a living thing and even an emotional one.

Göla (or Gola Hundun). Viavai Project. Racale, Salento. Italy. July 2014. (photo © Matteo Bandiello)

Göla tells us that his new piece is centered on an amiable antlered diety as a “symbol of the rebirth of nature and the cycle of the seasons studied since Paleolithic cultures, described here through vegetal elements and reflected as an oracle and a mouthpiece of behaviors.”

The name of the new piece is “Direzione” (direction) which he says, “speaks about coexistence of man and other species and creating a sustainable path forward.” Conceived as a sacred apparition, it uses symmetrical and metaphorical symbols in a way that echoes more established conventions of religious art.

While the street artist and performer describes his new work you may wonder how the allegories contained within it about resources, sharing, giving, receiving and communion with nature could ever be achieved. He admits that these are long time aspirational goals that people have had for centuries and he obviously believes that they are still worthwhile to contemplate. He speaks of the rising path in the image that is “guided by the light purple color of meditation and spirituality to a new conception of the planet that is in reality nothing more than a new-found understanding of the ancient tribal societies – married by advances current technology.”

Pride@Yale 2013 Presents: “History of Queer Street Art” (New Heaven, CT)

Jeremy Novy first got into street art in high school as a way to spend more time with the cute break dancers and graffiti boys; today he is one of San Francisco’s eminent queer street artists, using his creations to pay homage to the city’s gay history. Novy’s art also serves to combat the homophobia and misogyny too often present in street art culture. With his exhibit, “History of Queer Street Art”, Jeremy Novy showcases beautiful and subversive examples of queer street art from around the world. Join him for an opening lecture in the Trumbull gallery on Thursday April 25th at 3pm. Prints and stickers will be available for purchase (cash-only)!

Street Art Tribute to Steve Jobs on Bond Street in Manhattan

A poorly shot little video of this lenticular tribute to Steve Jobs, but you get the idea. Yesterday there were many tributes to the founder of Apple in front of the Apple stores in Manhattan, as many people were clearly affected by the creative genius of the guy over the last 3 decades.  Our thoughts go to his family and friends.

Swoon and Olek on the TV Machine

PBS ARTS has a new short film with two female Street Artists  SWOON and OLEK for their series “Off Book”. Watch it below- sorry about the commercial at the start of the video.

In case you don’t already know:

Poster Boy is a political street artist(s) from Brooklyn, New York. Poster Boy is known for spontaneously altering and collaging street and subway billboards with only a razor. The work ranges from incisive social commentary to satire to toilet humor, but like all unsanctioned graffiti and street art, it is considered vandalism and thus deemed illegal. All the while, the corporate graffiti that bombards our senses and pollutes our visual environment with advertisements remains unquestioned. This hypocrisy is the driving force behind Poster Boy’s work. In turn, the viewer is forced to consider the difference between what is legal and what is right.
