Breeze Block Gallery Presents: olive47 “Bonita Bonita” (Portland, Oregon)

“bonita bonita”

A solo exhibition curated by Sven Davis

2 May – 1 June 2013

“Bonita bonita” is taken from the catcall olive47 would hear from the local men and the also the compliments heard from the local ladies about her work when painting a series of murals in Mexico earlier this year. bonita bonita is a visual Garden of Eden, a place of beauty within a world of turmoil. Drawing on the power of myth for a significant element of its subject matter, bonita bonita applies symbolism and a visual discourse of spirituality in its presentation of a collective narrative of nature and morality in an environment where temptation is ever present. olive47’s bold use of color operates at a visceral level and activates an emotional response to the saturation throughout the body of work as a cerebral communication device. bonita bonita will contain paintings on wood panels presented individually, as assemblages and also combined within mixed media installations.

The exhibition opens Thursday 2nd May 2013 6pm, with a preview evening on Wednesday 1st May 2013 6pm alongside the group exhibition Wider than a postcard. The artist will be in attendance.

My Plastic Heart Presents: Hanna-Barbarians Group Show (Manhattan, NYC)

On April 19 myplasticheart will celebrate the opening of Hanna-Barbarians, a group show featuring the work of over 20 artists from the U.S. and abroad. The show’s name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to its theme, with all artists creating pieces using elements from their favorite cartoons. This is a chance for these artists to showcase those cartoons that have influenced them throughout their careers, sometimes being critical elements in their development and interest in the arts. The show is curated by the Studio Miners, Evoker & Team Sweet, who find joy in documenting the wonderfully exciting world of artists, collectors and creatives of all kinds. This theme particularly appealed to the Studio Miners because in their travels and studio visits, they were always fascinated to see what imagery other artists surrounded themselves with to stimulate creativity.

The opening will take place on Friday, April 19 from 6 – 9pm and the show will run until May 17. In anticipation of the opening, we will feature several sneak peeks of art from the show on this blog.  To sign up for our preview list contact previewme@myplasticheart.com.

Now that it is just all of us degenerates left running the place, let’s look at some of the important cultural signifiers (as Gaia would say) that are shaping our world….

“Don’t Ask Don’t blah blah blah”

You say Tomato

2 things about this trailer for an upcoming movie about graffiti in New York…
1. We cover street art, which is similar but I’m not expert on graff – so don’t ask me
for some great opinion on the matter
2. I love the dramatic tension created in the fast cutting of opinions here, and then the sudden swelling of heroic Viking choruses of fat ladies in strapless gowns and pointy Viking Helmets  comes out of nowhere from the dark ages, creating visions of brutish butchering armies in armor with V-shaped shields in one hand and cans of spray paint in the other.  Onward, Upward!
