This year’s theme is Untapped Capital, with participants focused on resources that are under recognized or underutilized in our cities.

IDEAS CITY is a four-day Festival of conferences, workshops, an innovative StreetFest around the Bowery, and more than one hundred independent projects and public events that are forums for exchanging ideas, proposing solutions, and accelerating creativity.

Krause Gallery Presents: Sheryo and The Yok “Pipe Dreams” (Manhattan, NYC)

Krause Gallery is pleased to present the highly anticipated exhibition of recent works by Brooklyn-based duo Sheryo and the Yok. While previously seen in group exhibitions, Pipe Dreams marks their first solo show in the United States since establishing the city as their primary residence last year.
Working with varying painting techniques, the artists have culled together collaborative pieces that represent their shared life together. From their nomadic travels the past year to in-jokes with their friends in New York, the Yok and Sheryo seamlessly combine their adventures into every detail of their work. For example, their hand painted vases combine eastern & western elements to portray the values of ideology, devotion, relationships, dharma and karma, depicting a narrative from the rich tales of their journey. From their fun filled art renderings with Chinese dragons, pipes, and geishas intermixing with the New York culture, Sheryo and the Yok put their own illustrative styles on imagery as they re-interpret the traditional folklore and fables of old Chinese times while injecting their own personal stories with their iconic styles.
Their most recent body of work for their upcoming show at Krause Gallery is full of adventure and intrigue as they departed the United States for countries like Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia. By traveling to their native countries as well as a few places in between, Sheryo and the Yok characterize their formative life experiences with the memories that are being made together. Another example of this can be seen in their newest body of work; after returning from warm Mexico to the rain and snow of New York they used their cartoons to reflect on the sunnier days behind them; beer, Spanish icons and surf boards began to be a part of each piece.
For their solo show at the gallery they will also be creating hand painted ceramic plates, vases, painted pieces on paper and canvases, a surprise installation downstairs along with Limited Edition one color 25” x 19” high quality screen prints. Pipe Dreams is a must see for any street art enthusiast or talent seeker of any kind.

Saber and Rostarr Compare and Contrast at Opera

Now through May 11 graffiti/fine artists Saber and Rostarr are on view at Opera Gallery in Soho in lower Manhattan in a dual show that contrasts the styles of both while revealing similarities.

The west coast graffiti celebrity Saber continues to build heavy layers upon his work, carved and chipped away to reveal what is underneath, a personal archive partially on display. It is a fitting metaphor for the residual buildup of a life and the identities that one assumes, curiously all amalgamated into one slightly grizzled presentation. Here the bombastic history of his throw-ups, burners, and tags are transformed into calligraphic letterforms and entwined with the symbolic patterning of a national flag. The muted industrial palette and battered and worn textures and finishes indicate that this has been a hard journey, but not without flourishes of beauty and flashes of style.

Rostarr’s less showy graphic symbolism may be due to a more conservative formative youth and plays more clearly with the letterform as pattern and rhythm.  The New York artist shows passion in the repetition, restricting the palette to two hues and laying in a calligraphic line and a visual beat that feels solid and confident but still human. Like Saber’s work, it feels very personal, studied, and purposefully imperfect. Without the multiple layers, it is more a contemporary diary, cleanly raw and open for you to read.

Elle “Take Your Skin Off” at The City Don’t Sleep. (Brooklyn, NYC)

Elle’s show on the 4th of May, Take Your Skin Off, is set to release the “ELLE Tattoo Girl” series, featuring hand painted photographs paired with reproductions. The show will explore transformation and the assumption of new identity. Graffiti is all about hiding one’s identity, using an alter ego, a shroud of mystery. On the same token, there is widely spread commodification of the graffiti artist in the public eye. This juxtaposition plays off of contemporary culture’s obsession with advertisement, fame, and the proliferation of image and icon. ELLE is exploiting the idea of notoriety and the visual competition with and collaboration of marketing space. Can someone be notorious just because their icon is everywhere? Because people can identify and have seen it? Is this fame?  


ELLE is graffiti obsessed. In Take Your Skin Off, the artist exposes herself by unveiling the masked persona and identifying herself with her larger-than- life pseudonym. ELLE= ALL WOMEN. ELLE, SHE is represented throughout the city and standing fiercely. SHE is protecting all of the walls and is the equal counterpart of the male ego. Is the work about the female skin and how we choose to represent ourselves? Are we comfortable in “the skins that we are wearing?” Then again, maybe ELLE is just objectifying the woman… is ELLE a woman? Is ELLE a man? What is it with graffiti and the addiction of writing ones name over and over again everywhere? What happens when the lines are crossed and the graffiti writer starts pasting these images everywhere and suddenly it becomes like media/propaganda and advertising combined with street art? Why is this image everywhere?!


ELLE’s show, Take Your Skin Off, will be opening May 4th, from 7-10pm, at The City Don’t Sleep. (410 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211). DJ Cat King will be spinning and Brooklyn SixPoints Brewery will be sponsoring the show. Come parteeee!

Images of the Week: 04.28.13

This week was a cool in NYC not just because JR and his minions were plastering faces all over the pavement in Times Square but because a couple of Brooklyn Street Artists, who were early on the current scene had their first introduction into the Brooklyn Museum for the Annual Artists Ball. FAILE created a custom 40 foot long table for guests, replete with their iconic spinning prayer wheels atop for the donors to the museum. It was good to see Patrick and Patrick were just a table away from graffiti/fine artist Jose Parla, who knocked out his own giant piece for people to eat off of. They say you sometimes have to go to foreign lands to get the recognition your work merits but in this case it’s gratifying to see a celebration of some hometown Street Art talent that continues to influence the scene.

We’ve seen a lot of fat cats, but never one this big. French Street Artist C215 finished it this week on a wall in the 13th arrondissment of Paris. Demian Smith, founder of Underground Paris, says the chat géant is “part of the neighborhood’s strategy to create an alternative tourism industry in this pretty ugly, working class area in the south of Paris.”  – Not the first time that Street Artists have perked a place up, just usually not on this scale. The strategy has so far included murals by Shepard Fairey, Inti, and Vhils, he says. Special thanks to Théo David for sharing these exclusive shots for BSA readers.

Sheryo and The Yok, Pipe Dreams and Road Trips

So what did you do on your spring vacation?  I know, me neither. But Sheryo and The Yok did and are back in BK after their extended trip that took them to Mexico and Australia where they hit a number of walls on their adventures. Fresh off the plane, they are cracking open the aerosol cans and telling tales about their trips abroad. It seems like in a matter of days they have executed two complete and detailed murals that reveal that their individual styles are sometimes distinct, other times ever-more complimentary on walls in Queens and Brooklyn.

First, in what could possibly be the 5Pointz own version of the upcoming Cherry Blossom season, take a look at “Pipe Dreams”, inspired by traditional Japanese art and calligraphy, with some obvious liberties taken. Afterwards we have a “Road Trip” at the Bushwick Collective, which could be an animated version of the sort of characters they met while tooling around and painting while travelling, and if that’s the case, no wonder they came back!
