Fun Friday 09.21.12

Yo Yo what’s up all the Brooklyn peepuls and the New Yorkers and the LA’ers and the Chicago’ers and the Stavanger Norway buddies and shout out to Martha as she hangs in Johannesburg today and to everybody who’s brave enough to tap into the creative spirit. Today in Brooklyn it’s sunny and bright and there’s a bird singing on the chain link fence outside my house. As usual the place to be is where you’re at. Also, we’d be really happy to meet you tomorrow at our show in Red Hook if you can fly by.

Let’s start Friday by getting inspired by KitKat – a Brooklyn flex dancer who knows her stuff. (VIDEO)

GEOMETRICKS Opens Saturday (BKLYN)

Of course we had to put this one first because we have 11 cool artists showing work that collectively illustrates one of the major new directions that Street Art and Graffiti are going in right now.

The Red Hook neighborhood is where the fun will be this Saturday as the opening of “GEOMETRICKS”, curated by Hellbent,  takes place at Gallery Brooklyn. With a FREE shuttle from the G/F Trains on Carroll St to the Gallery courtesy of local Brooklyn Crab restaurant, a Young Collectors Wall with dope pieces by the artists in the show all priced at $200 each (you must have valid student ID for these pieces), and music provided by Sleptember, you are going to see a slice of community we’ve all grown to love.

Support  the inaugural show of “Vandal or Visionaries” Series by BSA and enjoy the beautiful art works by: Augustine Kofie, Chor Boogie, Drew Tyndell, Feral Child, Hellbent, Jaye Moon, Maya Hayuk, MOMO, OLEK, OverUnder, See One. Then join us at Brooklyn Crab to hang after the show – and the restaurant will be offering a FREE shuttle back to the G/F Trains. So what’s there not to like? And we thank our local Red Hook based sponsor, SixPoint Brewery.

Sydney curates a show on the Street (Australia)

It looks like the Australians’ love affair for Street Art continues strong. Ambush Gallery has teamed up with Darling Quartet, Sydney’s new precinct and public arts space to mount an outdoor exhibition opening to the public today. The works of art on view are by a handful of well known and respected Street Artists working today including: Anthony Lister (Bris/NY), Beastman (Syd), Shannon Crees (Syd) and Hiroyasu Tsuri/TWOONE (Melb). The exhibition is FREE, open 24/7 and it will be illuminated at night.

TEJN Has a lock on Street Art (VIDEO)

Sculptor TEJN from Copenhagen broadens our conception of what street art and public art and sculpture are with his installations that he chains and locks and leaves. Basically, he’s just giving you his art, and if you really want it probably you will need a blow torch.

“Obey The Giant” Movie Kickstarter

“Obey The Giant” coming soon to a theater near you?…Yes if you help the auteurs, by donating to their kickstarter campaign. But before you go and donate take a moment to see the trailer for the yet to be completed film.

From the creators Julian Marshall and Alex Jablonski:

“Based on the true story of Shepard Fairey’s first act of street art, OBEY THE GIANT tells the story of a young skate punk challenging a big-city mayor and the powers-that-be at art school. Frustrated by his inability to gain respect within the confines of art school Shepard sets out to gain notoriety and acclaim by targeting the most powerful man in Providence, former Mayor Buddy Cianci. Risking expulsion and jail time Shepard plasters Andre the Giant’s face over the image of Cianci on a campaign billboard. As word of Shepard’s prank gets out, Shepard learns that art is a weapon and attention is both a blessing and a curse”.

Click here to donate on their Kickstarter and to see the trailer for the movie.

Getting Really High on the West Coast: Mear One, Chor Boogie, Shark Toof, Shepard Fairey

During the recent Los Angeles Art Show 2011, four Street Artists regaled the residences at the Ritz Carlton with brand new pieces. Mear One, Chor Boogie, and Shark Toof each worked for 6 days in the highest residence on the West Coast in advance of the big opening party hosted by Shepard and Amanda Fairey. Curated by Bryson Strauss, the show features aerosol, traditional brush painting, and a pulpy wall of wheat-pasted pieces.

L.A. Art Machine At Ace Gallery Presents: D*Face, Mear One, The London Police, Word To Mother, Will Barras and Kofie “Temporary Metropolis” (Los Angeles, CA)

L.A. Art Machine
brooklyn-street-art-temporary-metropolis-la-art-machine-ace-gallery

In May 2011, BritWeek, in collaboration with the L.A. ART MACHINE (LAAM), will produce a landmark, large-scale, museum-quality art installation by world-renown artists MEAR ONE (USA) and D*FACE (UK). This exhibition will be the centerpiece of the entire BritWeek Contemporary Art Program and will run approximately two weeks at L.A. MART second floor exhibition hall.

Utilizing approximately 25,000 square-feet, BritWeek & LAAM will encourage the artists to entertain an entire range of expression, employing any media that fits the artists’ concept (i.e. sculpture, digital media, paintings, prints, performance, etc.) The overarching theme, which may be interpreted loosely, is the U.S.-British experience and whatever that may mean to the artists.

In addition, D*FACE and MEAER ONE will commandeer chair sculpture in the parking lot of the L.A. MART as a special project piece for the artists to embellish, paint, and post. This outdoor sculpture may remain in perpetuity as a gift from BritWeek to Los Angeles and an internationally-recognized symbol of the L.A. MART.

Time/Date:
Friday, May 6, 2011 at 7:00pm – Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 7:30am

Location:
LA MART (entire 2nd floor)
1933 S. BROADWAY
Los Angeles, CA

“Marxist Glue” At Hold Up Art Gallery in LA

brooklyn-street-art-the-huffington-post-2010-11-04-Marxist_Glue-thumb

The young Hold Up Gallery in the Japantown section of Los Angeles currently has a sleek and smart-alec show that shouts for attention.  Drawing a clear connection between today’s graphic design-savvy Street Artists and their anti-corporate fascist/ punk rock/ culture-jamming roots, this show is a delicious collection of disgusted discontent.  Thanks to its relative proximity to the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is assembling an inaugural Street Art spectacular next spring under it’s new director, Jeffrey Deitch, the show has an added dimension of interest. A collection of polished pungency, “Marxist Glue” heralds the smooth collection as a survey of current LA street artists.

Artist and Columnist Gordy Grundy says the show is “Sticky” in his Huffington Post article:

“Marxist Glue, a new street art show curated by Toks Shoyoye, redefines the Los Angeles community and challenges MOCA. Curator Toks Shoyoye has stomped his foot and the earth has quaked. Marxist Glue is a group show, actually a historical gathering, of 13 Los Angeles artists. This show covers an epoch and illustrates the motivations of a movement. Los Angeles street art shall be redefined”

Amsterdam – Willem Kerseboom Gallery, in collaboration with the L.A. ART MACHINE, is proud to announce the opening of OP STRAAT, an exhibition of original artwork by legendary Los Angeles street artists, MEAR ONE, RETNA, and KOFIE.

This landmark exhibition marks the first time that these celebrated contemporary artists have exhibited together in Holland, bringing the unique and diverse visual language of California street art to Northern Europe.

Since the rise of urban art in the U.S. in the 1970’s, California artists have been at the vanguard of a new visual language that both defines and describes the contemporary urban experience and the environs of the West Coast metropolis.

All self-taught, these three artists elevate the subversive arts from the streets to established fine art venues, further challenging gallery and museum paradigms and establishing a new artistic vocabulary that is fresh, compelling, and unpredictable.

Op Straat, opens at Willem Kerseboom Gallery on October 16, 2010 and runs through November 13, 2010. Please join us for this exciting moment in contemporary art history.

Includes a special viewing of the monumental murals created during the Vox Humana live art installation at VOLTA 6 in Basel 2010, as featured on the Huffington Post, Juxtapoz, and Arrested Motion.

Opening: October 16, 2010 4-6 PM.
