“Heartship” Takes Flight: How and Nosm Complete Mural in LA

Street Artists How and Nosm have just completed a 6 day installation of a brand new piece with the LA Freewalls project here in the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. With occasional interruptions for rain and food and sleep, the twins methodically knocked out a complex and detailed mural 106 feet wide and 60 feet tall (32m x 18m) that effectively nails their reputation as two of the most talented artists on the Street Art scene today, not that it was in doubt. With two decades of work under their belts, it is a rare combination of focus, relentless creative exploration, and artistic integrity that has shifted the work of these guys into an international limelight over the past couple of years.

Named “Heartship” the gargantuan mural is on a mission to entertain, elate, and educate about what self-taught artists with heart can produce and add to the man-made environment. In a direct way the whole project strikes at the center of the current “mural moratorium” in LA, which many local artists view as narrow, marginalizing, and inept.

“The fact that this mural exists contrary to any official public art policy in Los Angeles is a miracle, and a testament to the courage, will, and determination of everyone involved in the project,” says Daniel Lahoda, who’s LA Freewalls Project has routinely advocated for a review and revising of the City’s official policy toward public art and Street Art.

This Saturday (10/15) the brothers will also be celebrating “ACHTUNG!”, their first solo show, with 50 new original works at Known Gallery in LA. Expect to be suitably blown away, and to see a huge crowd.

ROA in Los Angeles and Chicago

When Street Artist ROA hits your town with his aerosoled animal world, large swatches of walls, even blocks, become alive and are instant gathering places for new and old fans alike. The one man monochrome machine from Belgium depicts a curious mix of overlooked animals, sometimes in states of death and decay by way of commenting on human’s impact on the natural world.

Whether in rural Mexico or urban New York, his work is reliably riveting and a favorite for neighbors and Internet surfers alike. After catching the eye of LA MOCA this spring, his last minute addition to the “Art in the Streets” exhibit brought the collection up to the minute and cemented his place in the graff and Street Art continuum. BSA captured these images of ROA’s work this year on the streets of Los Angeles and Chicago this summer and we’re looking forward to his next stop at “Living Walls: Albany”.

LUDO in NY, Chicago, and LA with More of “Nature’s Revenge”

Parisian Street Artist LUDO brought “Nature’s Revenge” to the US this month and his eye-popping surreal wheat-pasted creations are now on walls in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. By combining weaponry with insects and plants into hybrids, LUDO is using this ongoing series to draw attention to how we are messing with nature in ways we never have in an unquestioning way and at our own peril. From biotech to nanotech to robotics to remote controlled drones, the face of war is sold with branding and a sizzling “wow” factor, accompanied by vague assurances that these developments are necessary to protect us good guys from the bad ones. From the perspective of this ongoing “Nature’s Revenge” series, our romance with all things shiny and futuristic is quickly morphing out of our control and it’s likely to come back and bite us, or worse.

Using a reliably greyscale, white, and acid green palette, LUDO’s high-tech hybrids are alternately frightening and amusing, and even super cool. While a Freddy Kruger facemask is obviously symbolic, it’s pairing with a mechanical daisy is unnerving. The wheat paste of a tarantular top-loaded missile delivery device is laughable until you see the video of unstoppable multi-limbed all terrain “big dog” robots being developed to do the same thing. Even the bunch of grape skulls seems sort of blunt until you think of what we’re now learning about irradiation, pesticides, and genetically modified foods. Taken as a whole LUDO’s work is one of the more message-driven on the street today and is another example of the new narrative-driven story telling we continue to witness in Street Art. Luckily, it’s also visually compelling.

Street Art is alive and well in Chicago and LA, two cities we’ve recently had the pleasure of touring with local expert guides. At our panel discussion at LA MOCA an audience member proffered the opinion that Street Art has peaked and is dead. Just like New York City itself, people have been pronouncing urban art and graff and Street Art as “over” ever since we got here – yet it all has a maddening and thrilling capacity for reinvention. It takes new forms and serves new purposes even as it thrives, distinguishing itself from what came before, as every new generation is bound to do by the laws of nature. We’ll let you know if it dies, promise. It’s like talking about the day music died. Ha!

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Anthony Lister, Banksy, Herakut, Jetsonorama, Kid Zoom, KWT Crew, No Teef, Shepard Fairey, Skewville, Snacki, and Swoon.

“I installed this piece and shot these images this morning at Cameron, near the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Chris is a local. He and his wife had been up all night gambling at Cliff Castle Casino. He said they lost about $400.00. His wife was pissed because she lost the money. Chris needed some space from her anger and his response was to get an 18-pack, trusting better times will come soon” ~ Jetsonorama

Opening Tonight “Street Art Saved My Life : 39 New York Stories” (LA)

If you are in LA tonight, please check out some New York stories at C.A.V.E. Gallery. The show is hung, the brand new pieces out back by Creepy, Gilf!, NohJColey, Adam Void, Hellbent, and Tiptoe are still wet, and Patrick just rollered a thick layer of black on the floors to cover up the mess we made. People from 7 or 8 countries have put in such personal and meaningful pieces, the quality is high, and so are a lot people in LA we’ve discovered. And there are a few surprises that you won’t believe – like Futura’s piece called “Brooklyn Street Art”, made of, guess what? And Nick Walker’s piece and accompanying mannequin will raise some eyebrows no doubt. It has been so great to work with these artists and these partners (ThinkSpace, C.A.V.E., Juxtapoz, LA FreeWalls, HuffPost Arts, LA MOCA) for the last half year to pull this together, and we are deeply indebted to everyone’s talents, vision, and positive attitudes. Before the doors are open, it feels like a total success. Love you guys and gals more everyday.

“Art in the Streets” Closes

Monday was the last day for the largest exhibition of graffiti and street art under one roof at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), “Art in the Streets”. Over the last four months the expansive show gave a little over 200,000 people an opportunity to see and learn about and understand a great deal more about the history of this multifaceted scene which continues to grow and morph and evolve around the world. Congratulations to curators Jeffrey Deitch, Roger Gastman, and Aaron Rose for their tenacity and everyone who played a part in putting this show together, a real collaborative effort.

Dabs and Myla at ThinkSpace Tomorrow (LA)

Hundreds of household items have been painted, many of them interconnected with larger pieces, are all over the ThinkSpace Gallery right now as final prep is happening for tomorrow night’s Dabs and Myla show by the Melborne/LA couple who have been keenly tag teaming to finish everything on time. Tomorrow we’ll have some pics for you. In the meantime here’s an interview on Sour Harvest and on Juxtapoz.

Taking a look at one direction that Street Art is going today and talking about what it augers for the future as more artists are investing time and labor into narratives behind their pieces on the street. Really looking forward to this one!

Brand New Photos from Todd Mazer

Late afternoon Los Angeles was the scene of a new splash of wild magic from LISTER yesterday as he sketched out and created a sooper cool visionary for the downtown street scene. In his signature portrait style, the Street Artist created a monochromatic seer with rainbows arching out from inside her glorious mind. Just goes to show you can’t judge someone by their external appearance.

Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo of BSA are curating some LA Freewalls with Daniel Lahoda in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles over the next couple of weeks as part of a cultural exchange between NY and LA to celebrate some of the talented people who tell great stories with their art. Daniel is the mind and the man behind the LA Freewalls Project that has already brought a number of amazing artists and art to the streets in the City of Angels.

Photographer and BSA contributor, Todd Mazer was literally on call to capture Anthony Lister’s new piece. Great thanks to Todd, who stayed up late to give BSA readers these first pictures this morning.
