TOward TOmorrow: Artists Instagram Competition with 10K Cash Prize / Dispatch From Isolation # 51

ARTIST COMPETITION NOW OPEN – Ends JUNE 5

The United Nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

If you pick one of those goals and create a piece of art about it you may win 10,000 pounds – which is roughly the same amount of weight the average apartment dweller has gained in Brooklyn since the beginning of March.

This art-centered program named TOward TOmorrow 2030 has its sights set on 2030 and is working hard to get us close to achieving those 17 goals in a program they started last year with many mural artists.

BSA supports artists and we support this project because we know some of the folks behind it.

Submissions close 5th June 2020 so check out the rules from the coffee company that is sponsoring this competition HERE. Also look them up on #TOwardTomorrow

“Go there and go deep,” says street photographer and filmmaker Cheryl Dunn in this new brand sponsored content video that takes you through mainly Chinatown/Wall Street area and allows you to hear her story and perspectives briefly.

Director of a highly-praised documentary called “Everybody Street” and many others of high quality, Dunn is more than familiar with the ethos of observing life in the chaos-metropolis and hoping to capture a moment that sticks out as a clarion yell. It’s about an approach that is only yours, and only possible through your vision, and luck.

But did you know the level of detail and minute mechanical manipulation that goes into a piece by Street Artist/fine artist Bordallo II ? Straight from Lisbon, where he propagates grandly forward from a curiously ornate studio spot.

Good Guy Boris “TOYS ARE BETTER PEOPLE” / Part I

Bad Boy Boris is not good at math or certain mechanical/technical matters but he’s good at persistence. Which is why he’ll succeed.

The graffiti writer is an authority on sniffing out opportunity and his hand-made and witty vlog allows you to tag along as he looks for the perfect spot by the beach outside of Athens to put up his piece.

“Toys are humble people, cool people, chill people,” coos the suddenly philosophical Boris as he strides victoriously from his freshly painted pat on the back for that much maligned population. Ah, but everyone is a rookie as some point right?

“Just another obsessed vlogger risking his life for the sake of YouTube because YouTube is more important than life,” he says in one more pearl of wisdom that will surely entice viewers to follow this guy until he works out all the kinks.

One of the fantastic parts of Miami’s Art Basel / Wynwood craziness, aside from the colorful drinks and hair sculptures and accidental tripping over almost every Street Artist you have heard of (and many whom you haven’t) is the sheer amount of madhouse chemistry that explodes in your face because of new partnerships and events – like the Juxtapoz Clubhouse in Wynwood opening today.

The premier contemporaty and underground magazine and cultural stew from the west coast teams up with New Jersey’s Mana Urban Arts and others this year to take over one of those previously run-down and neglected parts of the neighborhood to create an “immersive retreat”.

We got a behind-the-scenes peek at the installations and artworks in advance of today’s opening and were pleased to see that the quality is slammin’ –with sufficiently large installations to create an environment and to stand on their own as fully realized concepts.

So many of these artists can work larger, and many have: Dennis McNett stages fully performances and parades of characters pounding like warriors through streets, for example. Dude, the energy is good.

The mix of producers/collaborators at the Clubhouse is contemporary, theatrical, and somehow darkly comic –Jonathan Levine Gallery, Chandran Gallery, MILK Studios, ThinkSpace, and the 1xRun crew – a smartly flipped trip of heavy hitters that relies on the strangely symbiotic and the serendipitous to succeed.

Scott Campbell. This is is an interactive piece which will involve the public. Mr. Campbell is a tattoo artist and through a raffle willing participants will have the opportunity to have their arm tattooed but they will not know what the tattoo will be until completed. The participants will stick his or her arm, trough the hole in the middle of the installation and Mr. Campbell will be unseen, working on the tattoo on the other side of the wall. Duke Riley: A Brooklyn Bomber in new Juxtapoz (Video)

Graff and Street Art folks like to talk about going out and “bombing”, borrowing a military metaphor to apply to covering large areas of walls with paint or wheatpasted paper to major effect. From Red Hook, Brooklyn, Juxtapoz profiles an emerging new kind of bomber that knocks down the walls, explodes your expectations, blast the foundations of what we have become comfortable believing about ourselves and the world.  Unlike the cynical campaigns of fear that propel one toward mindless conformity however, this bombing encourages you to tap into the primal, the creatively expansive, the free-thinking self.  To paraphrase the artist, it’s about tolerance versus stupidity.

Duke Riley is many things; American fine artist, performance artist, tattoo artist, painter, sculptor, historian; RISD and Pratt grad, explorer, fine chef, gracious host, “son of a b*tch”. And to borrow from the street, this guy is a bomber – the new breed that we have been witnessing sprouting from the art communities and collectives re-invigorating Brooklyn since the mid-1990s. Curious, confident, and inventive; this is the gritty urban soil it grows in.
