“The Art Of The Mural: Volume 01” Captures a Moment

Murals hold their own place onstage in public space today for a variety of reasons that we discuss regularly on BSA. From grassroots and public, to private and corporate, we have watched the genre professionalize as Street Art festivals and other initiatives are often coupling artists with brands and are selling canvasses through the organizers galleries. Today we have the first of a promised four-part book series by Art Whino gallerist and organizer of the Richmond Mural Project in Virginia, Shane Pomajambo, that features many artists he has worked with in the brand new “The Art of the Mural”.

Featuring more than fifty current graffiti/Street Artists, the survey pays special attention to the show-stopping eye candy that commands attention for these nomadic painters who are developing their craft before an ever larger and more appreciative international audience.

Culture critic and curator Carlo McCormick, who writes the introduction to the Schiffer published hardcover, notes that this mural renaissance is quite unlike the US government funded New Deal era mural programs that produced “hundreds of thousands of murals for schools, hospitals, post offices, housing projects, and various government facilities”. And he’s right, these are emanating from a different place entirely.

The world-traveling media-soaked artists, of which this collection is subset, have had vastly more exposure to corporations and branding perhaps than, say, arts institutions, and a sophisticated self-handling is often on display with artists ever more savvy in their choices of style and content.

A greater percentage are now entering into private collections, galleries, and museums thanks to unprecedented platforms for huge exposure on the Internet, and their public works are adding rich character and dialogue to our neighborhoods and public spaces.

With academia, art critics, and auction houses all grappling with the rightful place of these artists in contemporary art and society at large it will be instructive to know the history and their lineage, content, context, and patronage. One has to agree when McCormick says that all of these “are helpful for us to consider in looking at and understanding the artists’ walls of today.”

This collection of talent is strong, with many of the mid-large names that are at play in this generation of painters whom are primarily born in the 1970s and 80s. In their work is a cultural appreciation for modern graffiti history as they now channel it along with formal training, art history, advertising, and a multitude of media. With few exceptions, it’s a tight list of artists, the images are riveting (though uncredited to their photographers), and the brief introductions by Pomajambo contain just enough biographical information and artist’ quotes to ground the story and give it context.

“As with everything I do,” says the Queens, New York native Pomajambo, “I always question and observe, and as we reach critical mass with murals I felt compelled to create this project and capture a moment in time.”

Disorderly, discordant, and richly chaotic, these two videos are centered around the Italian street art paintings and artists whom you will recognize from our earlier postings on community/gallery organized urban art programming – but within the context of historical art publicly displayed, peoples movements, patronage, fascism, the classics.

Dioniso Punk allows everyone to talk – neighbors, artists, organizers, curators, public philosophers, elected officials, psychologists, sociologists, entrepreneurs, posers, professors, historians, students, an opera singer, the petite bourgeoisie, international visitors and hapless puzzled opinionated locals.

Discussions at panels cut into impassioned discussions by senior women in the courtyard or didactic examinations in the street – some for illustration, others for whimsy, none to be ignored. More of a fact finding mission than cogent analysis, you may find it difficult to follow the narrative and so it is better to let go and allow yourself be battered by the insights and observations delivered with the jumpy cuts and uncompleted thoughts and discussions, preferring instead to sink into the tribe of the humans, here selectively displayed for your pleasure and hopefully, edification.

Etnik’s Geometric Forms Popping Off in Rome

Furthering his examination of geometric forms interacting in a multi-dimensional field, Etnik creates this new mural in a Roman neighborhood in full view from your terrace. The cube forms emanate forward from a central gravity mass toward the viewer, popping off the enormous sky-blue canvas.

The wall is part of a project sponsored by the 5th Municipality of Rome Capital, on a building at Via Bartolomeo Perestrello. Tour Paris 13 : Fluorescent & Towering Show Book

Another book to tell you about today! Remember when BSA took you to Paris that time and we skipped the line and went into all the floors of this soon to be demolished building?

“The numbers are astounding; 105 artists, 9 floors, 36 apartments, 30,000 visitors.

One hour.

That is how much time Street Art enthusiast Spencer Elzey had to himself inside the largest gallery of Street Artists and graffiti artists ever assembled specifically to transform a building for a public show. As he looked out a window to see the snaking lines of Parisians and tourists restlessly waiting to get in, he couldn’t believe his luck to be able to walk through the exhibit by himself and get off some clear shots before the throng hit.”

That is how we described it in November 2013 when Spencer took us on a whirlwind tour of TOUR 13.

Published last month this towering book with the page edges sprayed neon orange was released by Mehdi Ben Cheikh in French and English to commemorate the event, and seeing the installations this way is going to make you wish the place wasn’t destroyed. 500 new photos previously unpublished allows you to see the show as you travel from the cellar to the top floors.

You may wish you had more background on the artists and the context and clearly not all of the artistry is of similar quality but you will be satiated by the images and thankful that they were recorded during their brief duration. Published by Editions Albin Michel, in partnership with the Itinerrance Gallery, this show will continue to soar long after the dust has settled.

BSA Special Feature: RED VAPORZ – Russian Graffiti and Street Art

Russia has a growing Street Art and graffiti movement – in select cities, under certain circumstances. But it is ALIVE and these mostly young animated and excited artists are eager to take the scene in a new direction.

This brand new documentary travels and interviews a variety of artists working in the public realm today, brandishing cans and balancing instincts to do illegal work versus legal work – which makes it sound rather similar to other scenes around the world.

Yes, there appears to be political repression, and content needs to steer clear of political opinions, and in the end we are really just talking about a growing muralist movement. It is also interesting to see the various western influences as interpreted and filtered through local tastes, traditions, styles.  While hip-hop culture is likely to have been the lever in the 90s, the international Street Art aesthetic is here as well as the global branding of youth culture. Pre-Internet, they wouldn’t have known about us, and we wouldn’t have known about them. When it comes to grassroots movements fed by the open exchange of culture, does it increasingly appear that there is no “us and them’?

 

Last Breath III – Cambodia

The Last Breath initiative that installs art inside condemned architecture is taking a detour through Cambodia. Is this evidence of the strengthening of “spraycations” or interactive extreme art tourism? Let’s keep an eye on this.

Etnik in Pisa for Indoor/Outdoor, 25 Years After Haring (Italy)

Marking a quarter century since Keith Haring created his mural on the back wall of the Servi di Maria convent beside the Church of S. Antonio in 1989, the city of Pisa began Indoor Outdoor – Arte Urbana a Pisa last month with the first murals of the festival installed on the 24th and 25th of May. In June the second part of the project will be an indoor exhibition of the seven artists who participated in the outdoor murals, including Etnik, who is from Vinci, about an hours drive from Pisa.

Here we see Etnik on a wall not far from the entrance of the airport exploding his geometric forms across a colorful waving wash of space. The former graffiti writer has moved from the letter form to the geometric form and was at Memorie Urbane a little earlier in the year with a similar context and technique; first blocking in the colors and then tracing with aerosol the quadrilaterals and their couplings and groupings, building the isometric foundations from below, allowing them to float in space, free to interact with 3-D and 2-D forms passing by.

Etnik and Millo at Memorie Urbane Festival 2014

Here are a handful of in-progress shots at Memorie Urbane 2014 featuring Etnik and Millo at work on their site-specific pieces. The festival appears to be a departure from standard “urban art” aerosol jams because of its sensitivity to the location and historical considerations in the siting of artists – which makes this more of an edifying mural program.

Etnik is an Italian/Swede artist who calls Italy home and began his outdoor art career with graffiti. Now he has moved from the letter forms associated with traditional graffiti style to an examination of geometric forms interacting in a multi-dimensional field.

Millo completed his massive wall mid April – a dream like system of symbols and icons; highways and cities and a sliced self portrait floating amidst and above it all. The Mesagne born native studied architecture and illustrates the innerworkings of his mind to “reveal the transience of human existence, suspended somewhere between what we know and what is hidden inside us,” he writes on his website.

Great week in NYC with the new mayor shaking hands for hours in the cold outside City Hall with all New Yorkers last Sunday, then we got smacked with the devastating cold, then sleet, then high winds. Next up, ice locusts! Also, if your Christmas tree is still up, don’t plug it in because that puppy will go up in 25 seconds of flaming glory. Wait until it is safely on the street before igniting.

This week we also featured not one but two yarn artists, which has gotta be a first for us – London Kaye and the Olek. Yarn on the street isn’t exactly a trend, but it is sort of a trend.

– In a related story, Olek is now reporting that the piece we documented her installing in 4 degree temperatures has mysteriously disappeared. Street Art vanishes all the time but the size of this piece was gargantuan and it was a complicated install and it was hung in a very heavily traversed part of Little Italy. Says Olek in her FB/Twitter all-points-bulletin “Alert: 376 square feet of #crochet art stolen.” Keep your eye on Grandma, also Aunt Betty. ‘Cause you know, knitters sometimes get competitive, that’s all I’m saying.

BSA is lucky to be a clearinghouse for many people who participate in and celebrate the Street Art scene – artists, curators, designers, collectors, galleries, museums, researchers, academics, historians and fans. Because we have never taken advertising readers tend to trust our platform and people in the community give us great behind-the-scenes opportunities to learn and share freely with others about the creative process and the culture on the street. It also gives us the freedom to do whatever we want when planning editorial or content.

Recently we had this idea about giving our site out to artists or art-lovers a week at a time so they could also fully share their personal experiences of the Street Art/public art/graffiti/ scene. So this week before Thanksgiving we’re giving the whole week to one person as a “residency”, our way of sharing this valuable platform and inviting you to have a greater voice in this conversation.

Spencer Elzey loves art in general and is an avid Street Art fan in particular and he likes to take trips that include shooting images on the street in whatever city he visits. He also supports artists by buying their art, regularly attending art exhibitions, reading and studying about them and following their evolution. Over the last couple of years we have seen that he is also a dedicated Street Art hunter with camera in hand on the streets of New York City when he isn’t at his regular job – and he loves to share what he finds with others on social media and as an occasional contributor to BSA.

When we heard that Spencer was planning a trip to Europe this fall we proposed to him the idea of him keeping a photo journal to be shared exclusively with BSA readers and we offered to help connect him with some friendly guides on his trip so he could get some splendid and exclusive photos. He enthusiastically accepted the offer and here is the first day of Spencer’s one-week residency on BSA, an edited treasure trove of images and insights from the guy himself.  We know you’re going to dig it.

Here’s this weeks schedule:

  • Monday is Vitry-sur-Seine Street Art.
  • Tuesday will be Paris Street Art.
  • Wednesday will be a special collection of the installations from the Le Tour Paris 13 project.
  • Thursday will be his adventures in Berlin.
  • BSA Film Friday will feature a selection of videos reflecting the cities he toured.
  • Saturday will be Spencer’s London showcase.

Of all four cities Spencer visited over a two week trip, this one seemed to really embrace the value of street art to the culture, he says. “In terms of which city was the most welcoming of street art I’d have to say Vitry-sur-Seine was because this is really a grassroots campaign kickstarted by C215,” he says of this city of 83,000 that is called a commune and lies on the outskirts of Paris.

It’s not hard to believe that the scene is attributed in large part to the influence of the well-regarded stencil artist C215 as this is a guy who considers his work to be community service and who regularly features people from the city he is in as subjects of his portraits. That’s why he was the perfect guide for Spencer, who says he learned a huge amount of information in a short time.

“I have to say that C215 is one of the more interesting, opinionated and knowledgeable artists that I have come across. We started the morning at his local café with a coffee. I explored around a little by myself while he was attending to some prior engagements with his gallery and then he caught up with me out on the streets. We eventually had lunch and then went back to his house. Topics ranged from his opinion on the scene in general, on other artists, on galleries and it even touched on street art websites and documenters.

“I hadn’t realized that he has only been doing stenciling for seven years but it was easy to see how far his pieces have come from the few monochrome stencils that still remain around Williamsburg (Brooklyn) from around 2008,” remarks Elzey.

“What C215 has done in Vitry-sur-Seine is much bigger than I expected it to be, both in terms of quantity of work in the area as well as the impact on the community. The first piece that he put up there was about five year ago and within that time there have appeared at least 150 different pieces from him and other artists throughout the area,” says Spencer.

Naturally, Elzey was shooting whatever odd or curious or thrilling piece he found on his travels through this city that celebrates artists, in addition to the work done by his host. “I was definitely surprised with how much Street Art there was in Vitry-sur-Seine. I took around 200 pictures of different pieces while there and I’m still seeing pictures on Instagram of things that I had missed,” he says.

One piece in particular by C215 impressed him a lot – because of it’s impact visually and its perfectly contextual placement. Additionally, Elzey felt that it illustrated the regard that the residents have for the artists work and the fact that people didn’t appear to think of it as illegal or vandalism, per se. “While I was exploring and taking pictures, various residents pointed with excitement about pieces just around the corner that I should go look at,” he says.

“There was one older gentleman, probably in his 70s, who just simply said “La porte” and smiled while pointing in a certain direction. I rounded the corner to see a stencil of the Virgin Mary on the back door of the main church,” he says of one of the few religious themed pieces that the artist has created. “C215 had indicated that this was one of his favorite pieces in the area and it was nice to see that residents appreciated it as well. Had it not been for this project there really would be no other reason for me to have travelled down to Vitry-sur-Seine but it was definitely worth it.”

La Galleria Studio D’Ars è lieta di presentare al pubblico milanese il lavoro di Etnik, artista e writer conosciuto a livello internazionale.

Etnik è lo pseudonimo dietro al quale si cela la figura poliedrica di Alessandro Battisti, dagli anni ‘90 uno degli artisti più attivi e completi del writing in Italia, a cui Etnik apporterà insoliti e personali contributi, scaturiti dalle proprie esperienze, nel campo dell’illustrazione e della scenotecnica. La sua passione per questa disciplina lo porta oggi a realizzare tag bi e tridimensionali con uno stile proprio e riconoscibile, offrendogli l’opportunità di partecipare a grandi eventi pubblici e di collaborare coi migliori writers della scena internazionale. Lo studio del lettering non si limita alla pura ricerca estetica delle lettere ma, dopo vent’anni passati a dipingere spazi urbani di periferia e a cercarne di nuovi, l’artista lo coinvolge nella riflessione sul concetto di “città”, che ne scorge un nuovo punto di vista, fino a farne soggetto principale della sua ricerca pittorica. Il lettering diviene la base su cui Etnik imposta l’intero impianto concettuale e compositivo della sua nuova e personale ricerca artistica, che nel 2003 vede la luce sotto il nome di “Città prospettiche”. La trasformazione delle lettere, che compongono il suo nome in masse geometriche, apparentemente irriconoscibili, sono lo spunto su cui costruire moduli architettonici riconducibili a stereotipi di insediamento urbano, che s’intersecano violentemente su piani opposti e punti di vista spiazzanti per rappresentare un cemento sempre più costrittivo e un equilibrio sempre più precario nella vita quotidiana di ognuno di noi. La serie diviene soggetto e oggetto di studio, che trova nella trasposizione scultorea e su muro maggior spettacolarità e arditezza, mentre su tela e tavola riesce a toccare livelli di sintesi geometrica estrema, in cui l’identificazione delle costruzioni è quasi impossibile se non grazie a un uso descrittivo del colore e di una gamma cromatica brillante e di contrasto.
