Street Artist Hush offers his own venue in Newcastle Upon Tyne for Street Artists to come in and lay down some paint, away from the street and apart from the financial implications of a gallery show. This new video interview with Street Art duo Herakut gives for the first time a genuine sense of their working relationship and approach to their pieces.

Says Hush, “The idea I had for this space is to give the artists an opportunity to create street work inside and in a controlled environment. The space allows artists to experiment and continue with a street aesthetic without having to produce canvas work for the public to view.”

The Pantheon Catalog Release Party: Saturday in Brooklyn

About a year ago Daniel Feral told us about this idea he had for a show at the Donnell Library across from MOMA to draw attention to the history of graff and Street Art in New York. It seemed like a pretty vast undertaking at the time, and in fact, the project gradually and quickly ballooned and incorporated much of the community and helped capture this moment in history as well as give perspective to the evolution that preceded it. With partner Joyce Manolo and a cast of hundreds, Mr. Feral has taken a deep dive and produced a tome that will be used for reference for years to come, along with his own diagrammatic explanation of the evolution of Graffiti and Street Art in the context of other 20th Century art movements.

This 426-page catalog is a hybrid of scholarly journal, popular magazine, and graff zine. 33 artists from the 1970s through today tell their own histories, in their own words and pictures, while local writers and photographers give an overview of the cultural milieu. The catalog includes a dedication to Rammellzee by Charlie Ahearn, essay on the Feral Diagram by Daniel Feral, and Street Art in the 2000s by Steven P. Harrington with photographs by Jaime Rojo, in addition to 20 essays, 20 interviews and over 400 images from the efforts of over 30 individuals.

SANER
Edgar “Saner” Flores is an urban artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Raised by his parents in Mexico City and surrounded by rich color and tradition, Saner developed an interest in drawing and Mexican muralism early on. He began expressing himself on paper and through graffiti art, later going on to earn a degree in graphic design from the Universidad Autónoma de México. His creations are influenced by Mexican custom and folklore, color, mysticism, masks and skulls. A mix of these lifelong interests and passions has led him to become the artist he is today. Saner’s work has been featured in galleries in Mexico, the United States, London, Berlin and Barcelona. – Kidrobot

Steve “ESPO” Powers: “Flight of Genius” (VIDEO)

Steve ESPO Powers is a man of letters and he likes to play with them like other kids play with Legos. Informed with a rich commercial vintage signage vocabulary and a sharp eye, and armed with buckets of paint and brushes Powers has created bold messages in a number of cities that play on and satirize meanings and advertising jargon.

Crown Heights Gold: Examining Race Relations and Healing in Crown Heights.

The Skylight Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Crown Heights Gold: Examining Race Relations and Healing in Crown Heights, Brooklyn During the 20 Years Since the 1991 Riot, curated by Dexter Wimberly. Using contemporary art as a vehicle to foster dialogue and remembrance, this exhibition commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Crown Heights Riot, and explores the transformation of the community since the harrowing incident. The multi-media exhibition will feature painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, video and sculpture created by roughly twenty New York-based visual artists. To compliment the exhibition, a calendar of public programs is being planned in collaboration with community leaders and organizations. The activities will look at the work done in the neighborhood post-riot, as well as the ongoing state of cooperative efforts to encourage continued inter-group communication and understanding.

Skylight Gallery Hours: Wednesday to Friday from 11AM to 6PM and on Saturday from 1PM to 6PM.
