Join us on Saturday, August 31st for an AMAZING Harvest kickoff of Apples, Cider and Street Art as Matt Siren’s “Ghost Girl” comes to life in a Corn Maze! This one of a kind Maze challenges and educates it’s guests on all facets surrounding street art. Woodward Gallery in collaboration with internationally acclaimed master maze-maker Dave Phillips have created an original Street Art Maze theme featuring Artist Matt Siren’s iconic “Ghost Girl” over multiple acres donated by Barton Orchards in Hudson Valley (located at 63 Apple Tree Lane, Poughquag, New York; 845.227.2306 phone; www.bartonorchards.com.)

“Jamel Shabazz” A Film by Charlie Ahearn at BAM (Brooklyn, NY)

In the infancy of hip-hop, Brooklyn-born photographer Jamel Shabazz documented the pioneers of music and style who would launch an enduring worldwide phenomenon. Charlie Ahearn, the director of the seminal grafitti movie Wild Style, pays tribute to both Shabazz and those who defined hip-hop before it had definition. More than just vintage shots of kids rocking Puma Suedes, Kangols, and pin-striped Jordaches in Times Square and Fort Greene Park, Shabazz’s photographs have hundreds of (oftentimes tragic) stories behind them, and Ahearn’s Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer gives voice to these images with dozens of interviews with Shabazz himself, graffiti pioneer and hip-hop historian Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite, legendary rapper KRS-One, and more. This vibrant portrait of the early years of hip-hop had its world premiere at BAMcinemaFest 2011

Lazarides Gallery Presents: Know Hope “The Abstract and The Very Real” (London, UK)

This August, Tel Aviv-based artist Know Hope makes his solo debut at Lazarides Rathbone with a new exhibition, The Abstract and The Very Real.

Addressing the human condition and its collective social existence through a series of unique works and a site-specific installation, the exhibition questions the ubiquitous notion of the ‘”abstract and the very real”, the weight and burden of which though universally apparent is often unidentifiable to most.

Appropriating found objects, vintage frames and old papers, Know Hope will fill the exhibition with assemblages that visually embody abstract concepts of memory and temporality. Reclaimed materials will come together breaking free from the confines of canvas or frame, his archetypal character crawling from one to the next with the frames representing the empty spaces in our lives and our undying struggle to fill them.

Labrona and Friends: Non-Lazy Days Of Summer in Montreal

Canadian Street Artist/graffiti artist/fine artist Labrona has been maximizing the beautiful summer weather by doing some murals at the festival in Montreal (our coverage here) and along with Mu-art. Since it can get rather dull and old when you are painting by yourself all the time, he also hit a wall with buddies Produkt and Befour.

The industrious and deliberate anonymous portraitist tries to squeeze in the occasional skate session or feed his much loved freight addiction when he can, naturally. Balancing the more polished studio side with his spontaneous outcroppings of nearly expressionless, possibly cogitating people and characters, these murals are a combination of the two disciplines. Using dimensional rendering of stylized forms, it’s an opportunity to showcase his sophisticated color palette, his respect for classical painting methods, and an undertone of comic appreciation for personality. As long as it is a chill spot, Labrona would prefer not to rush.

Wall \ Therapy 2013 Friday Update 07.26.13

Skunk in the tunnel. ROA is back in Rochester.

But he’s not alone – a number of new artists arrived mid week to get the aerosol festivities reinvigorated. Not that they were flagging.

WALL\THERAPY has been up on a record number of walls all week – a rolling panoply of artists and organizers and volunteers and paint and sandwiches and water bottles and cherry pickers and neighbors stopping to watch and ask questions, offer opinions, and send it out on Instagram. Wednesday night was a meet and greet and panel talk with some of the artists and last night was a full on party at a local club. The wide variety of installations is providing entry for a lot of conversations online and in the street about the art and the artists – which is always good for building engagement with public space.

Here are new process photos from the last couple of days from Binho, Cern, Chris Stain, DALeast, Ever, Faith47, Gaia, Mr. Prvrt, Range, ROA, Siloette, Thieven Stephen, and Wise2.

Chris Stain got started earlier in the week and didn’t really like his original piece, so he regathered his ideas to do this brand new piece derived from a photo he took of his son Kesh this spring. Combining an urban cityscape from Queens with the portrait, Chris explains, “Lately I’ve been inspired by double exposure photography and I wanted to explore those possibilities in my own work.”
