She’s the Bomb: Ella & Pitr Launch “La Femme Canon” on Airstrip South of Paris

Ella & Pitr have sent a human cannonball across a massive runway in the south of Paris and we bring you exclusive new aerial photos today as you shoot into your week. “La Femme Canon” is a bit of wordplay that can mean a gorgeous woman and a person who has been shot from a cannon. Naturally, this beautiful new woman has wings to assist her to fly further once she has been launched into the air.

“It was a very difficult delivery because of the rain, but finally here it is,” say the exhausted couple of this newest giant mural visible from the sky – completed only weeks after completing their record-breaking one in Norway.

Perhaps the rain has contributed to the rich green fields that frame the new image on the airstrip of an old military airport. The lengthy  pavement certainly makes an appropriate canvas for a woman in aviation and Ella & Pitr appropriate codes from the strip into the flying cap la femme is wearing. Enjoy these images of the latest high-flying duo’s work, and merci beaucoup to the artists for sharing them with BSA readers.

JACE Plays Enormous Game of Donkey Kong in Paris 13

JACE Plays Enormous Game of Donkey Kong in Paris 13

JACE has been creating his small figure called Gouzou on walls on streets and roadsides since in 1992 and has a serious set of fans that love to see them in various situations. With the opportunity to go large in Paris he gave his cartoon-like figure a stage to run on multiple stories – one in fact modeled on the video game “Donkey Kong” with the original Mario character substituted with his Gouzou.

Full of ladders, trap holes, sacks of Euros, and a handful of serious dangers, you can see that the platform adventure is really all about getting to the hip-shaking princess. That’s another opportunity to score, as it were.

Another mural in Paris 13 organized by Gallerie Mathgoth, the theme was chosen after conferring with the residents of this social housing complex. Jace wants to thank his assistant Wose and we thank Mathgoth for sharing it with BSA readers.

REKA Completes His Largest Mural in Paris 13

REKA Completes His Largest Mural in Paris 13

July always brings out massive public artworks in the northern hemisphere and this year you can add this one, his largest, by Australian street artist REKA in Paris  which he completed last week. Tracing his surrealist abstract pop composition diagonally to the upper right corner of this multi-story building, the Melbourne-now-Berlin based aerosol artist labored for five days laying his flat shapes across this brick façade in the heart of the city.

The building is a few blocks from Le Seine and Université Paris Diderot in a district called Paris 13 that is now known for massive murals by street artists from around the world. The wall and opportunity was organized by Gautier Jourdain, director of the Galerie Mathgoth and this mural is being followed closely by an equally expansive piece by artist JACE.

And you thought New York had potholes? Be careful in Paris!

Mario Mankey: The World Is Not Over Part 2

Debuting here, the newest video from Mario Mankey. See him knock out a wall inside Berlin’s former Institute of Anatomy.
The creepiness of this place is possibly the inspiration for the title: “The World Is Not Over: I’m Still Alive”.

Giorgio Bartocci from Blindeye Factory

Interview with Specter at Vantage Point

Happy we were able to bring this guy with us to Berlin in March, and very happy to hear this excellent interview that James and Tom did with him while he was there!

We Love Paris In The Spring Time! New Shots of Street Art.

We Love Paris In The Spring Time! New Shots of Street Art.

When Cole Porter wrote “I love Paris in the Springtime!” in 1953 he probably was thinking of showgirls and their suitors and the wickedness of the Montmartre dance halls in the 1890s, but when photographer Sandra Hoj was in Paris last week she was thinking of aerosol paintings and paste-ups, and her enthusiasm was equal or greater to Porters.

“Five full glorious days in one of my favorite cities,” she writes when talking about her excursions into the Paris Street Art scene, saying, “Noticing street art is a party, not a job. It’s time to dance.”

Now back in Copenhagen where she blogs and writes about infrastructure, urban planning, bike parking, and trees, Ms. Hoj happily shares her newest Paris findings with BSA readers, and we thank her for it!

“I miss Paris already,” she adds.

Street Artist Combo says he was beaten for his street art advocating religious tolerance and naturally there has been a series of Je Suis Charlie variants appearing in the streets of Paris since we last checked in with this hot spot on the Street Art scene, so you know that many newly appearing works are charged with socio-political relevance. In these new images you will also see some fresh ideas from new names as well as long-term players, so those are encouraging signs of a vibrant scene as well.

You may also note an increase in the professional/commercial quality of some of these pieces and murals and begin to question how long a free-wheeling organic Street Art scene can last before low level opportunists cash in on it and turn it into a sad strip mall selling tchotchkes or derivative works by anonymous artists like a machine. Ah, capitalism, of thee we all sing.

The London scene has elements of this, so do New York and Melbourne, but we didn’t see it so obviously until photographer Geoff Hargadon returned from Paris with these excellent photos for BSA readers and gave us his account of a store he wandered into.  Enjoy his account further along in this posting.

In the mean time, long live Paris and it’s many players on the street!

Geoff’s account of his discovery in a heavily trafficked area known for Street Art in Paris recently. “Rue Déyonez is an active street for street art, with de facto legal walls on each side showing work from the most prolific Parisian artists. So I was walking up Rue Déyonez and this door was half open. I would not say it was exactly inviting but somehow I wiggled my way in. This guy named Pedro was in there with a friend, drinking tea.”

A quick scan reveals Warhol, Hendrix, Obama, Woody Allen at the clarinet, Freud, and of course Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks? Pedro’s Gallery (photo © Geoff Hargadon)

“I looked around and saw that the room was completely filled with stenciled paintings of (mostly) American figures such as Warhol, Obama, Hendrix, Marilyn Monroe, and lots of Jimi Hendrix. The smell of aerosol was intense, and I quickly concluded my host had never worn a protective mask in his working life. Pedro probably set up camp to capitalize on the flow of visitors to this concentrated display of street art. I didn’t quite catch where he was from originally and I don’t think it was France. He was certainly cordial. I poked around his rooms full of literally hundreds of stencils while he allowed me to ignore the PAS DE PHOTOS sign on the pole. I left with a (overpriced) stencil on a Paris map.”

Benjamin Girette and Dysturb : 14 From 2014

14-from-2014-G-animation-banner-small-3pmer
Happy Holidays to all of you charming and sparkling BSA readers!
It’s been a raucous sleigh ride with you and we thank everyone most sincerely for your support and participation this year. A sort of tradition for us at the end of this December we are marking the year with “14 from 2014”. We asked photographers and curators from various perspectives of street culture to share a gem with all of us that means something to them. Join us as we collectively say goodbye and thank you to ’14.

Benjamin-Girette-Photographer-
A new Street Art team is hitting cities around the globe this year and they have disturbed some while delighting others. The mostly French collective of photojournalists named DYSTURB are wheat-pasting large reproductions of their photographs on selected streets as a way to bring the news of the world directly to passersby. “We are photojournalists who have taken onto the walls of your city to highlight stories under-covered by mainstream media,” says the group. Today DYSTURB co-director Benjamin Girette, who shot images during the Arab Spring and made a name for himself with his Instagram images of the Kiev uprising, shares with us his favorite shot of the year from the streets of his hometown.

“I took this image this summer on July 19th, 2014 in Paris. It is a demonstration for Gaza that quickly turned in to clashes with the police forces. I have a strong memory of this moment because four of my friends and colleagues were hurt during these protests. They were wounded by angry protesters, not by the police. This is something that is on the rise with many of todays protests – media correspondents are more and more often targeted for doing their work.”

~Benjamin Girette

Could We Kill a Panda The Same Way We Kill a Bull? Michael Beerens in Paris

Could We Kill a Panda The Same Way We Kill a Bull? Michael Beerens in Paris

The Bullfight! The historic tradition! The glorious danger of a confused and raging bull ready to charge at his tormentor. The bulging manhood of the Matador as he proudly steps around the coliseum in his ornate and regal costumery!

And now ladies and gentlemen, the Pandafight! Watch as the athletic and handsome slayer taunts the raging Panda with a red flag and runs quickly away! See how he stabs with colorful blades into the panda’s back, thrusting his sword between the shoulder blades!

On a wall in Paris’ Chinatown (Belleville) Street Artist Michael Beerens re-imagines the national animal of China standing in the place of the traditional bull, ready to be killed slowly and publicly to entertain the assembled fans.

“I noticed that in the eyes of man, all animals do not have the same value,” says Bereens, who challenges an ingrained thought pattern that finds the cuddly cute photogenic ones more valuable in some cultures than others. “For example, crushing a spider is good but a ladybug is saved; rats are killed but we like squirrels and hamsters.”

Michael Beerens. Paris, France. Oct 2014. (photo © Alexis Masurelle)

To complete this wall, which he says he did not have permission for, Bereens simply showed up to it with a lot of equipment and paint cans.  He says some people stopped to thank him for putting color on the walls, and others stopped to take photos of the wall, of him, of themselves in front of the wall.  “It’s a free exchange,” he says, “I try to convey a human message but I have nothing to sell except my ideas.  I’m not trying to sell Coca Cola,” he explains.

Which reminds of those white polar bears

Let’s go to a Polar Bear Fight!!

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

BOS, Bushwick Collective, Juicy Fest, RedHook Studio Tours, Northside Festival, Welling Court… BK and QNS are bombed with artists in June – and today’s throwdown in Bushwick is just one tab on the 12-pack to pop and spray all over your friends on a hot summer day. When it comes to street art we’re in this new legal mural phase right now and when you head out to Bushwick Open Studios today you will see freshly painted and in-process walls. Don’t worry, we’re still seeing a lot of uncensored freewheeling self-selecting artistic installations of the unsanctioned variety – and that sector is alive and well.  See you out in the street!

Here our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring

Adam Fujita, BustArt, Cb23, Chris Dyer, Dain, Dasic, Don Rimx, Ethos, FoxxFace, Jerk Face, Labrona, Meca, Meer Sau, Milo, Muro, Osch, Princess Hijab, QRST, Ricardo Cabret and Son, Sem, Skewville, Stinkfish, Stovington 23, Txemy, Vexta, Zaira

If you are lucky enough to be in NYC this Sunday, get out of the house and head over to East Williamsburg and Bushwick. You’d have the chance to see many of these murals in person and perhaps and artist or two while applying the final touches to his or her wall. Click HERE for more info on The Bushwick Collective block party taking place today. And HERE for the Juicy Art Fest which is not happening until June 5, 6 and 7 but artists are currently busy at work on their murals and it is only a short walk between the two.
