ART CART NYC PRESENTS HELLBENT AT IDEAS CITY ON MAY 4, 2013

Art Cart NYC is proud to announce its participation in the New Museum’s Ideas City Streetfest, taking place on May 4, 2013 from 11 am- 6 pm on Houston and Chrystie St. on the Lower East Side.

For this year’s festival, Art Cart will present the latest iteration of Hellbent’s Mix Tape series. A continuation of the artist’s desire to incorporate craft and folk culture into urban art, this body of workis characterized by vibrant colors and complex patterns that slash across the surfaces they cover, from paper to public walls. It plays with the conventions of traditional color theory in the way pure pigment and decorative markings are fashioned in electric geometric arrangements. The mesmerizing designs are a contemporary nod to the practice of trompe l’oeil; though the configurations appear to be collaged wallpaper, the ornamental lace motifs are in fact painted to give the flat surface a sense of depth and history.

Munch Gallery Presents: Erik Savage AKA Radical! “Waste Forms” (Manhattan, NYC)

Munch Gallery is pleased to present ‘Waste Forms’, featuring new paintings by Erik Savage(aka RADICAL!). Since his first solo exhibition back in October 2011, Savage has investigated further into the themes of habitual consumerism and addictions, social alienation and structures. Through a new expressive style, he draws on objects common in nature, and commonly disregarded – our subjective waste. As we navigate through life’s constant beginnings and endings, the matter in between most often appears as a fluctuant disharge, but always unleashing in its isolated power. The waste forms become our narrative debris as we push through life and expedite new memories.

Savage lives and works in Troy, NY. He has shown extensively in the US, and has participated in major group exhibtions throughout Europe. Latest with representation and two sold out shows in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Union Docs Present: “The Subway Series” Screening of Tunnel Stories and Spraymasters (Brooklyn, NYC)

Please join us at Union Docs for the third screening in our two-month long Subway Series film festival! This screening will focus on the artists, taggers, and vandals, who make their mark underground in tunnels and on trains. It features the short film Tunnel Stories followed by the featured doc SprayMasters, along with a couple other short subway-related surprises.

Filmmakers Geoff Duncanson and Manfred Kircheimer will be in attendance for a Q&A along with series curator Reid Bingham.

Beneath New York City, there is a book being written on the walls of tunnels and underground passageways. Raw, honest, and fascinating, Tunnel Stories provides a rare glimpse into the world of the graffiti artists who see subway tunnels as a playground, gallery, and lifestyle. Hear the stories of why these artists, writers, taggers, and vandals risk arrest, injury, or even death in pursuit of their clandestine lifestyle.

In SprayMasters, four ex-graffiti artists reflect on their early years as renegades who snuck into rail yards and decorated New York City subway cars with stolen paint while eluding arrest. Now in their forties and embraced by the establishment, Lee Quinones, Lady Pink, and Futura 2000 are prominent artists with an international following, while Zephyr is a widely published journalist who writes about graffiti and popular culture.

They talk about the extreme risks they took as teenagers, the joys of seeing their work on subway cars, the diverse styles of graffiti, its global reach, and its place in modern life, where it has been co-opted by advertising and fashion. Directed by Manny Kirchheimer (Tall), SprayMasters is a follow-up to his underground classic Stations of the Elevated (1980), one of the first films to feature New York’s infamous subway graffiti.

My Plastic Heart Presents: Hanna-Barbarians Group Show (Manhattan, NYC)

On April 19 myplasticheart will celebrate the opening of Hanna-Barbarians, a group show featuring the work of over 20 artists from the U.S. and abroad. The show’s name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to its theme, with all artists creating pieces using elements from their favorite cartoons. This is a chance for these artists to showcase those cartoons that have influenced them throughout their careers, sometimes being critical elements in their development and interest in the arts. The show is curated by the Studio Miners, Evoker & Team Sweet, who find joy in documenting the wonderfully exciting world of artists, collectors and creatives of all kinds. This theme particularly appealed to the Studio Miners because in their travels and studio visits, they were always fascinated to see what imagery other artists surrounded themselves with to stimulate creativity.

The opening will take place on Friday, April 19 from 6 – 9pm and the show will run until May 17. In anticipation of the opening, we will feature several sneak peeks of art from the show on this blog. To sign up for our preview list contact previewme@myplasticheart.com.

Follow the NARD STAR from Cape Town to Brooklyn

Far from her hometown of Rondebosch in Cape Town, South Africa, Street Artist Nard Star (or simply Nard) just completed this fox in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. With references that include cubism, graffiti, and street art, she often includes characters and animals along with text treatments, always in a defined and precise line style and steady hand. Self-taught as a child, Nard eventually got some formal training as an artist and is hitting more walls than ever as her visual vocabulary continues to refine and define.

The Urban Habitat Project (UHP) is focused on creating dwellings for the aviary community and has successfully installed units in major metropolises from New York to Mexico City.

XAM comes to New York via Chicago and Los Angeles and has been part of the active street-art scene for many years. Drawing on his architectural training, XAM has created by far one of the most unique types of street art to truly integrate form and function. These structures are no ordinary “bird houses;” many of them are site-specific constructions that include solar panels for night lights and roof-top gardens to actively support plant life and encourage insect nesting. At times there are elements of humor in the designs, such as mock satellite dishes and camouflage paint jobs.
