Painting the Eye of a Ukrainian Storm: My Dog Sighs in Cardiff, Wales

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to unfold street artists around the world are taking to the streets to express their sentiments for peace. According to those who have lived it and survived, war is hell, and in the end, everybody suffers. The ordinary citizens of both countries are affected by this conflict and will continue to be. Surely there is a way to stop this war?

The Welsh street artist who goes by the name “My Dog Sighs” shares with us his new painting in Cardiff, focusing on the reflection in a Ukrainian woman’s eye.

“We’ve all sat and watched this hideous situation unfurl and while it’s not much, I wanted to do what I know best (throwing paint) to highlight my sadness and anger over the Ukrainian invasion by Russia,” he tells us.

“I used two images to create the silhouette, the first, the beautiful place in the centre of Kyiv and the second a powerful photo that came up on my Twitter feed this morning of last nights attack.The tear speaks for itself. A horrid, horrid situation.I stand with you Ukraine”.

BSA Special Feature: A Kaleidoscopic Journey Through Money

The confidence and reverence that humans give to currencies is as much an article of faith as any religion can conjure. In fact, it is a requirement for any money not backed by gold – your faith. The motifs and icons and design flair employed in its presentation to the user are indicative of our values as well. Here the director and designer Lachlan Turczan breaks apart the elements, finds their similarities and differences, and delightfully, mesmerizingly, re-flows the results to a musical soundtrack by Blake Mills.

“I made hi-resolution scans of banknotes from 23 countries ranging from the 1800s to the modern-day. Machine learning was used to further enhance these scans so that I could zoom in on the intricacies of the engravings. Using replacement animation techniques, the guilloché patterns wash over the viewer in a barrage of linework and geometry. Iconic scenes throughout history are also shown: the age of exploration leads to industrialization, wonders of the world are replaced by office buildings and icons of freedom stand in stark contrast to images of slavery. The project culminates with the collective eyes of all world leaders staring back at the audience.”

My Dog Sighs “Inside”: A Hidden, Staged Exhibition in Portsmouth, UK

My Dog Sighs is the name of a flawed human being and street artist. Come inside.

According to his descriptions of the artist’s new “Inside” installation in the UK’s only island city of Portsmouth (pronounced PORT-smith), there will be tours in this secret location – ever so because the atmospheric and theatrical work is not officially sanctioned and is staged in an abandoned building.

So it will be a bit of magic when you discover that the British street artist has spared no expense nor level of preparation – including consulting with a sound design team and lighting design team to create his inner world as explained by his own characters. “Street artists are often perceived as ghosts,” he says and goes on to explain that these creatures are somewhat ghosts as well and representative of his inner ‘Quiet Little Voices.’

Whether playful or melancholic, these creatures are strangely familiar to attendees of these tours. The entire project is one which he hopes to develop into a documentary and a textbook for teachers to provide “young people with the creative tools needed to find hope in difficult situations,” showing “how they can use art to empower their local communities.”

The Small Voices From the Streets Are Still Talking

BSA readers know that we’ve always been democratic about the work we show here- because that’s really how to best understand the evolution of the scene.

The illegal small stuff you find actually tells you a great deal – the selection is a barometer of sorts. These works aren’t permitted, commissioned, sold, traded or co-opted ususally, untouched by the voracious appetites of advertising and consumerism

We love murals, don’t get us wrong. But we are always making certain to return to where things began for us; the small, eclectic mix of blink-and-you-miss-it pieces on the streets.

They come in all forms; stencils, stickers, wheat pastes, sculptures, crafts and small drawings. In some cases, we know the artist who created the piece and often we do not. But everyone gets a chance to address the public in the lively Street Art scene, and we bring to you a small selection of pieces we’ve found recently.

Street Artists At The Fairs For Armory Week NYC 2014

Not quite spring, the Art Fairs are arriving in New York ahead of the tulips. We strolled the impossibly long aisles and peered into the booths to find the folks who have at other times been called “Street Artists”. This weekend they’ll be fine artists, and the list is quite a bit longer than years past as the professionalization of the street continues.

Shows like the Armory, Scope, Volta, and Fountain are good testing venues to see the commercial viability for many of these artists and some have foregone representation – preferring to foot the bill on their own. Since walking the streets to see their work requires multiple layers and hats and gloves – traipsing through the fairs can be far preferable than dirty old Brooklyn streets. It’s also nice to see how some of these folks look in a tie or a blouse – or even just hit a comb. Here below we include some possible gems for you to hunt down.
