Images of the Week 06.03.12

Summer jumped off with fires ablaze this week as Street Artists and all other manner of related plastic arts activity began flaring all over the place. It helps that finally the epicenter of Street Art has officially relocated to Bushwick years after Ad Hoc Gallery announced it’s arrival. Of course it’s also in Red Hook and Greenpoint and LIC and Ridgewood and Bed Stuy and even, dare we say it, Williamsburg.

But hot damn if we didn’t have more fun this week in Williamsburg watching a couple of leggily mincing models down by the waterfront kicking their shapely gams into the air and grasping the entire island of Manhattan between their feet (check out the coda photo at the end for a lick). It was extra fun because only 10 years ago this location was a garbage strewn dump where people went to get high and have sex in the wild brush and watch tall-bike sparring matches and the City didn’t even care about it. On a hot day you might find two portly Polish women in their 60s wearing wire bras and sunning themselves on plastic chaise loungers – in fact we used to call it the Polish Riviera. Now this is a public park created for shiny NYU students to play sports in and get ripped abs and clever “location scouts” have “discovered” it so it was especially fun to find this fashion shoot happening here and have one of the overheated stylist queens march over and try to shoo us away while snapping the free shoe show. Try.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, featuring Bishop203, Brett Amory, Essam, Dan Witz, ENX, Love Me, Mint & Serf, Mr. Toll, Nick Walker, Olek, Troy Lovegates (AKA Other), Sabio, Sheryo, Sonni, The Yok, and Willow.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-IMAGES-OF-THE-WEEK_05-2010

Here’s our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuring: XAM, JR, El Sol 25, NohJColey, Mint & Serf, PEZ, Leo Kuelbs, Michael Mut, MTM, DGa, SX2BU, G2R, JOX, ONU.

brooklyn-street-art-xam-jaime-rojo-09-11-web-12Street Artist XAM is participating in this year’s DUMBO Art Festival taking place this weekend in the Brooklyn riverfront neighborhood called DUMBO. The annual art festival champions a huge public art element, with installations and projections in the street, in tunnels, on bridges, – and always contains a mix of sanctioned and unsanctioned art that blur the distinct lines of your position as a spectator or participant. With or without an official map to guide your feet, pedestrians can freely explore and stumble upon small thoughtful pieces and huge mind-bending light projections, conceptual mind candy, social commentary, and political screeds. Together with Art In Odd Places and Bring to Light Nuit Blanche NYC 2011 next weekend, it looks like New York is actively courting art in the streets this Fall – not to mention the street theater and artful costumes and signage playing out live in the “Occupy Wall Street”demonstrations.  The DUMBO  festival will run until today, Sunday September 25.

We’ve been tracking XAM’s work for quite a while now, and for those still not familiar with XAM’s work he custom designs and builds eco friendly birds houses that he calls CSD Dwelling and Feeding Units. He places the custom architecture units on signage high were birds can take shelter, careful not to damage property and yet provide a very stylish resting place.  Stay tuned for an upcoming studio visit and interview with XAM.  (photo above © Jaime Rojo)

Happy New Year! BSA Highlights of 2010

Year-in-review-2010-header

As we start a new year, we say thank you for the last one.

And Thank You to the artists who shared their 11 Wishes for 2011 with Brooklyn Street Art; Conor Harrington, Eli Cook, Indigo, Gilf, Todd Mazer, Vasco Mucci, Kimberly Brooks, Rusty Rehl, Tip Toe, Samson, and Ludo. You each contributed a very cool gift to the BSA family, and we’re grateful.

We looked over the last year to take in all the great projects we were in and fascinating people we had the pleasure to work with. It was a helluva year, and please take a look at the highlights to get an idea what a rich cultural explosion we are all a part of at this moment.

The new year already has some amazing new opportunities to celebrate Street Art and artists. We are looking forward to meeting you and playing with you and working with you in 2011.
