Welcome to BSA Images of the Week! The energy always builds on the streets of NYC as Halloween approaches. The night feels inky and dense, the air cold and damp, with dried leaves and bits of garbage lightly clattering across the sidewalk in sudden whirlwinds. The city’s nerves tightened this week as masked ICE agents descended on Canal Street, pursuing the sidewalk sellers of faux Chanel and Versace shades. And in a curious coincidence, the East Wing of the White House was reduced to rubble — surely a metaphor waiting to be explained.

The NYC mayor’s race got heated at this week’s debate between the three contenders, whose positions have been the same since the spring when Mamdami was way ahead of the pack, and the current Mayor endorsed the ex-governor Thursday, which most consider a zero-sum game. Mayor Adams had previously called Cuomo a snake and a liar – a month ago – so this represents a huge change of heart. The class act former governor named Cuomo has been widely labeled as racist after his official X account posted – and then deleted – an AI-generated ad depicting “criminals for Zohran Mamdani”.

A piece in The Art Newspaper tracks how the mayoral candidates view the arts: funding, creative-sector jobs, and affordability for artists.

In street art news, we were lucky to catch the naming of a NYC street after Jean-Michel Basquiat this week with his two sisters, step-mom, and the extended family – and an enthusiastic crowd. The City of New York dedicated the Jean-Michel Basquiat Way at The Bowery and Great Jones Street a few feet from JMB’s old studio. Some might consider it an irony that a former vandal gets his way, all these years later. Other’s recognize that these issues are not black and white, but are often GRAY.

Images of The Week: 11.17.13

A beautiful week weather-wise in New York – a brisk and sunny week that was great for discovering your city without sweating like a hog. Before we all get clobbered by the holidays and start piling on pounds it has been stupendous just to wind through the streets and burn off the calories and see lots of good new pieces popping up.

Also, we see a lot of street related movies and videos pretty regularly and were fortunate to attend the NY premiere this week of a documentary by Cheryl Dunn that you’ll probably dig too. It’s called “Everybody Street” and it floods you with decades of NY street photography by so many great shooters in this every-changing weird and wooly city we all love. Photographers include Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Jill Freedman, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz, Rebecca Lepkoff, Mary Ellen Mark, Jeff Mermelstein, Clayton Patterson, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper, and Boogie, and also featured are historians Max Kozloff and Luc Sante. Yes, this is a short list of all the great photographers who have been capturing the NY scene, but its a cool collection. NEW YORK, NY, FEBRUARY 18 – As the cold days of February come to a close, artists, gallery owners, collectors and creative people from across the globe begin their annual migration to New York City for the highly anticipated Armory Show. Here at +aRt (540 West 28th Street), at a brand new gallery in Chelsea, we will offer a fresh alternative to the congestion and attitudes by showcasing the diversity between artistic communities.

“In an effort to create an exhibition platform for our friends during Armory week, we decided to revisit our past by opening up The Chelsea Chapter at +aRt. The Chelsea Chapter comes on the heels of The Stanton Chapter, an alternative art space we opened in 2008 in Lower East Side. ” – mint

Well Hung is a group exhibition featuring photography, sculpture, paintings and drawings by an eclectic mix of old and new friends. Participating artists include: Adam Krueger, Alfredo Martinez, Andrew Poneros, Clayton Patterson, Curtis Kulig, David Forer, David Hochbaum, Erik Foss, Futura, Jeff and Will Robbins, Jordan Seiler, Julie Floersch, Kevin Bourgeois, Leo Fitzpatrick, Lucien Samaha, Maripol, Matisse Patterson, Michael Anderson, Mint&Serf, Misha Most, Norman Reedus, Oswaldo Chance Jimenez, Peter Pan Posse, Peter Passuntino, Pablo Power, Samantha West, Skullphone, Shadi Perez, Tristan Eaton and Victor Payares.

Free Arts NYC, is a charitable organization that recognizes that art exists in unconventional ways, and is proud to be the official charity partner and supporter of The Chelsea Chapter at +aRt. A portion of proceeds will be donated to their mission to provide under-served children and families with educational arts and mentoring programs. The Chelsea Chapter will host the opening reception on Saturday, March 5th from 6 pm to 10 pm. A schedule of events including artist workshops and sponsor-hosted programs will be available soon. I’ll have a couple brand new works on display alongside street luminaries Swoon, Shepard Fairey, Cope 2, Mr Cartoon, and Clayton Patterson to name a few. Should be a great show.
